Vintage 1940s Coral Gables Evening Dress #1177
SIZE:
These directions are for size 14.
Changes for sizes 16 & 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS: 
Bernat Fleurette:
Skeins – 25 (26-26) Main Color (MC); 1 Contrasting Color (CC)
1 Pair Standard Straight Knitting Needles #2)
1 24” Standard Circular Knitting Needle #2
1 Steel Crochet Hook #3
Snap Fasteners
1 yd Elastic
Lining for Belt
Shoulder Pads

GAUGE:
7 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

NOTE:
Any changes in length of skirt are made before 1st dec rnd.

SKIRT:
Use circular needle & MC, cast on 567 (594-594) sts. Join, be careful not to twist sts.

1ST RND: * K 12, sl 1, K 12, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd.

2ND RND: * K 25, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd.

NEXT RNDS: Rep these 2 rnds until piece meas 2” (1”-4”), end with 2nd Rnd.

1ST DEC RND: * K 10, K 2 tog, sl 1, K 12, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd = 21 (22-22) sts dec.

NEXT RND: * K 24, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd.

NEXT RND: * K 11, sl 1, K 12, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd.

NEXT RNDS: Rep these 2 rnds for 2”, end with 2nd Rnd.

2ND DEC RND: * K 11, sl 1, K 2 tog, K 10, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd = 21 (22- 22) sts dec.

NEXT RND:  * K 23, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd.

NEXT RND: * K 11, sl 1, K 11, P 2, rep from * to end of rnd.

NEXT RNDS: Cont in this manner, work dec rnd every 2” on sl st rnd & al­t dec before & after sl sts on each dec rnd, until piece meas 25” (28”-29”) = 315 (286-308) sts.

NEXT RND: Dec in same manner as before & rep this dec rnd every 1” until piece meas 30” (31”-32”) = 210 (220-220) sts.

ON SIZES 14 & 16 ONLY, work in patt, dec 10 sts at even intervals on next rnd.

ON ALL SIZES, work even on 200 (210-220) sts for 1”. Bind off all sts.

BLOUSE:
BACK:

Use straight needles & MC, cast on 92 (100-106) sts.

NEXT ROW: Work in ST ST, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾” 10 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 112 (120-126) sts until piece meas 8” (8”-8½”).

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 6 (7-7) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 4 (5-5) times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 92 (96-102) sts until armholes meas 7¼” (7½”-7¾”).

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 6 (8-6) rows bind off 10 (8-11) sts.

NEXT ROW: Bind off rem 32 (32-36) sts.

FRONT:
Use straight needles & MC, cast on 100 (106-114) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in ST ST, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾” until piece meas 4¾” (5”-5½”), end with K row.

NEXT ROW: P 16 (19-24), put marker on needle, P 28, put marker on needle, P 24, put marker on needle, P 28, put marker on needle, P 16 (19-24) sts.

NEXT ROW: K to 1st marker, inc in each of next 28 sts, K center 24 sts, inc in each of next 28 sts, K to end of row.

NEXT ROW: P.

NEXT ROW: K to 1st marker, * inc in next st, K 1, rep from * to 2nd marker, K center 24 sts, * * inc in next st, K 1, rep from * * to 4th marker, K to end of row.

NEXT ROW: P.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in ST ST on 224 (230-240) sts, inc 1 st each end of needle on next row & rep this inc every ¾” until there are 232 (238-246) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until piece meas 8” (8”-8½”).

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 9 (10-10) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 5 (6-6) times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 204 (206-214) sts until armholes meas 2”.

SHAPE NECK:
NEXT ROWS: Work across 102 (103-107) sts; join another ball of yarn & work rem 102 (103-107) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work on both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every 3rd row until there are 88 (90-93) sts on each side.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on both sides at once until armholes meas 6¼” (6½”-6¾”), end with P row.

NEXT ROW: K 1(2-2) sts, K 3 tog 29 (29-30) times, K rem 0 (1-1) st.

NEXT ROW: P.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 30 (32-33) sts of each side until armholes meas 7¼” (7½”-7¾”).

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
At each arm edge bind off 10 (8-11) sts 3 (4-3) times.

SLEEVES:
Use straight needles & MC, cast on 76 (80-82) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in ST ST, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾” until there are 86 (92-96) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until piece meas 4½” (5”-5½”).

SHAPE CAP:
NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 9 (10-10) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼” (4½”-4¾”).

NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off rem sts.

BELT:
Use straight needles & MC, cast on 10 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even in ST ST for 2½”.

NEXT ROW: Inc 1 st each end of needle & rep this inc every 1” until there are 28 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until piece meas 14½” (16½”-18½”).

NEXT ROW: Dec 1 st each end of needle & rep this dec every 1” until there are 10 sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even for 2½”. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING:
Work 1 row SC around top & bottom of skirt.

Sew underarm, shoulder & sleeve seams.

Set in sleeves.

Work 1 row SC on neck & sleeves.

Block skirt, blouse & belt.

Sew skirt & blouse tog.

Work beading on inside waistline.

Run elastic, cut to waist measurement, thru beading.

Line belt.

Close belt with snap fasteners.

Use double strand of CC, make twisted cord & appliqué on belt in design as shown in picture.
