Vintage 1950s Cactus Two-Piece Dress #1178
SIZE:
These directions are for size 14.
Changes for sizes 16 & 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS 
Bernat Boucle de Laine – 19 (19-20) Balls
Bernat Beada - 1 tube Silver
1 Pair Standard Straight Knitting Needles #2
1 24” Standard Circular Needle #2
1 Steel Crochet Hook #5
1 Slide Fastener
1 yd Elastic 1” Width

GAUGE:
8 sts = 1”
12 rows = 1”

NOTE:
Any changes in length of skirt must be worked before 1st dec rnd.

SKIRT:
Use circular needle, cast on 592 (608-624) sts.

Join, be careful not to twist sts.

NEXT RNDS:  Work rnd & rnd in seed st until piece meas 2½”.

NEXT RND:  * K 59 (61-63) sts, work 15 sts in seed st, rep from * to end of rnd = 8 seed st panels.

NEXT RNDS:  Rep last rnd until piece meas 5”.

1ST DEC RND: * K 2 tog, K 55 (57-59) sts, K 2 tog, work 15 sts in seed st, rep from * to end of rnd = 16 sts dec.

NEXT RNDS:  Work even 2”.

2ND DEC RND: * K 2 tog, K 53 (55-57) sts, K 2 tog, work 15 sts in seed st, rep from * to end of rnd = 16 sts dec.

NEXT RNDS:  Cont to dec 1 st each side of every K panel every 2”, have 2 sts less in each K panel on each dec rnd, until piece meas 12” (12”-14”) = 528 (544-544) sts.

NEXT RNDS:  Dec 16 sts in same manner as before & rep this dec rnd every 1” until piece meas 31” (31”-32”) = 224 (240-256) sts.

ON SIZES 16 & 18 ONLY, on next rnd dec 1 st in center of each K panel = 8 sts dec. Work 1” even.

ON ALL SIZES, bind off rem 224 (232-248) sts.

BLOUSE:
CACTUS MOTIF PATT: 

1ST ROW: Inc 2 sts in st designated by K 1, P 1, K 1 in same st.

2ND & 4TH ROWS: Purl 3 sts.

3RD ROW: K 3 sts.

5TH ROW: P to 3 sts before patt, inc 2 sts in next st, P 2, K 3, P 2, inc 2 sts in next st.

6TH & 8TH ROWS: P 3, K 2, P 3, K 2, P 3.

7TH ROW: K 3, P 2, K 3, P 2, K 3.

8TH, 10TH, 12TH, 14TH, 16TH, 18TH & 20TH ROWS: Rep 6th Row.

9TH, 11TH, 13TH, 15TH, 17TH & 19TH ROWS: Rep 7th Row.

21ST ROW: P 3 tog, P 2, K 3, P 2, P 3 tog.

22ND & 24TH ROWS: Rep 2nd Row.

23RD ROW: Rep 3rd Row.

25TH ROW: P 3 tog.

These 25 rows will form cactus motif.

Be sure when inc to K 1, P 1, K 1 all in same st.

BACK:
Using straight needles, cast on 119 (127-135) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in seed st until piece meas 2”.

NEXT ROWS: Now work in ST ST, dec 1 st each end of needle every 1” 5 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 109 (117-125) sts until piece meas 8”.

NEXT ROWS: Inc 1 st each end of needle & rep this inc every ¾” 9 times more.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 129 (137-145) sts until piece meas 15” (15”-15½”).

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 7 (8-9) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 5 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 105 (111-117) sts until armholes meas 1½”, end with K row.

YOKE:
NEXT ROW:  P 7 (10-13) sts, * work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 17 sts, rep from * end work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 7 (10-13) sts = 6 cactus patts set up.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in ST ST, follow cactus patt on 6 sts set up on prev row until 25 patt rows have been compl.

NEXT ROWS: Work even in ST ST for ¼”.

NEXT ROWS: Work 45 (48-51) sts; seed st on center 15 sts; work rem 45 (48-51) sts. Rep this row for ¼”, end with K row.

NEXT ROW:  P 7 (10-13) sts, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 37 sts, seed st on center 15 sts, P 37 sts, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 7 (10-13) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Cont to work center 15 sts in seed st, work cactus patt at each side as set up until armholes meas 4¼” (4½”-4¾”).

BACK OPEN­ING:
Work to center st; join another ball of yarn & bind off center st; work to end of row.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on both sides at once, keep 7 sts at each center edge in seed st, until 25 patt rows have been compl.

NEXT ROWS: Work in ST ST for ¼”, end with K row.

NEXT ROW: P 7 (10-13) sts, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 27 sts, work seed st on rem 17 sts of right side of back; on left side of back work in seed st on 17 sts, P 27 sts, work 1st Row of patt st in next st, P 7 (10-13) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work cactus patt at each side on sts set up, move seed st 1 st nearer each arm edge EVERY ROW until there are 29 (31-31) sts in seed st on each side.

NEXT ROWS: Work even in patt as set up until armholes meas 7¼” (7½”-7¾”), end with P row.

NEXT ROW: K tog each 3 sts of each P 3 cactus patt = 52 (55-58) sts on each side.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
At each arm edge bind off 7 (9-13) sts 5 (4-3) times. Bind off rem 17 (19-19) sts of each side.

FRONT:
Cast on 127 (135-143) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in seed st until piece meas 2”.

NEXT ROW: P 43 (46-48) sts, put marker on needle, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 39 (41-45) sts, work 1st Row of patt in next st, put marker on needle, P 43 (46-48) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work cactus patt at each side in sts set up & keep all sts outside markers in ST ST, dec 1 st each end of needle every 1” 5 times, forming new patt each time ¼” above last patt.

NEXT ROWS: Cont to work cactus patts directly above each other until piece meas 8”.

NEXT ROW: Inc 1 st each end of needle & rep this inc every ¾” 9 times more.

NEXT ROWS: Work even on 137 (145-153) sts until piece meas approx 15½” (15½”-16”), end with 18th Row of patt.

NEXT ROW: P 32 (35-37) sts, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P 11 sts, work in patt as set up to last 33 (36-38) sts, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P rem 32 (35-37) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work these 2 new cactus patts on sts set up, cont in es­tabl patt on all other sts, until 2 center cactus patts have been compl.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
NEXT ROWS: Dis­c 2 center cactus patts, at beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 10 (11-12) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 6 times.

AT SAME TIME, when 18 rows of each cactus patt are compl, work as follows: P to 12 sts before 1st cactus patt, work 1st Row of cactus patt in next st, work in patt as set up to 11 sts beyond 2nd cactus patt, work 1st Row of patt in next st, P to end of row.

NEXT ROWS: Cont in patt as es­tabl, work all sts bet 2 new cactus patts in ST ST when prev cactus patts are compl. When these 2 cactus patts have been compl, work even in ST ST on 105 (111-117) sts for ¼”, end with K row.

NEXT ROWS: Work 12 rows of cactus patt above each cactus patt just compl.

NEXT ROW: On next row work in patt to center 34 sts; work these 34 sts in seed st; work in patt to end of row.

NEXT ROWS: Follow patt as set up, move seed st 1 st nearer each arm edge EVERY ROW until there are 58 (62-62) sts in seed st.

NEXT ROWS: Work even in patt until cactus patts are compl.

NEXT ROWS: Start 2 more cactus patts ¼” above each cactus patt just compl & work 2 rows.

SHAPE NECK:
Work in patt to center 27 (31-31) sts; join another ball of yarn & bind off these 27 (31-31) sts; work to end of row.

NEXT ROWS: Work on both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 4 times.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until armholes meas 7¼” (7½”-7¾”), end on wrong side of work.

NEXT ROW: K tog each 3 sts of each P 3 cactus patt sts = 35 (36-39) sts.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:
At each arm edge bind off 7 (9-13) sts 5 (4-3) times.

SLEEVES:
Cast on 64 (64-68) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in seed st for 2”.

NEXT ROWS: Then work in ST ST, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾” until there are 98 (104-110) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work even until piece meas 17½” (18”-18”).

SHAPE CAP:
NEXT ROWS: At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 10 (11-12) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row for 4¼” (4½”-4¾”).

NEXT ROWS: Beg of each of next 6 rows bind off 3 sts. Bind off rem sts.

FINISHING:
Block each piece.

Work 2 rows SC around top edge of skirt.

Work beading on inside top of skirt.

Thread tapestry needle with Beada & use double strand, embroider 3 times over each stem & top of cactus as shown in picture.

Sew underarm, shoulder & sleeve seams.

Set in sleeves.

Using yarn, work 1 row SC around all edges.

Using Beads, work ch st outlining seed st borders on neck, sleeve & bottom of blouse.

Close back opening with slide fastener.

Run elastic, cut to waist meas thru beading & sew ends tog.

Re-block skirt & blouse.
