1960’s Raglan Cardigan Sweater Accented with Color Bands & Pocket Flaps #980

SIZE: 
12-14, 16-18.  Directions are for size 12-14, with changes for 16-18 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bear Brand Or Fleisher’s Shetland & Wool, 2 oz skeins:  color A 12 [14]; color B 1 [1]
Crochet hook #8/I

GAUGE:
3 sc = 1”
3 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust, buttoned:  39” [43”]
Width of back at underarm:  18” [20”]
Width of sleeves at underarm:  15” [16”]

NOTE:  Entire garment is made using 2 strands of yarn.  Mark 1st row of each piece for right side.

BACK:  
With 2 strands of A, ch 55 [61].

1ST ROW:  WRONG SIDE:  1 Sc in 2nd & each rem st of ch – 54 [60] sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc of prev row.

Rep 2nd row until 12” from beg, end on wrong side.  Mark for underarm.

ARMHOLES:  
Ch 1, turn, 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 [5] sc for underarm, 1 sc in each of next 46 [50] sc, leave last 4[5] sc for underarm.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc – 46 [50] sc.

DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, * draw up lp in each of next 2 sc, yo & thru all 3 lps – dec sc*, work to within 3 sc of end; rep bet stars once, 1 sc in last sc – 44 [48] sc.

Work 1 row even.

Rep last 2 rows 14 [15] times –16 [18] sc.  Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT:  
With A, ch 31 [34].

Work as for back on 30 [33] sc until same number of rows on back to underarm, end on wrong side.  Mark for underarm.

ARMHOLE:  
Ch 1, turn, 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 [5] sc for underarm, work to end – 26 [28] sc.

Work 1 row even.

DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st sc, dec 1 sc, work sc to end.

Rep dec at armhole edge every 2nd row 9 [10] times – 16 [17] sts.

Work 1 row, end at armhole edge.

SHAPE NECK:
1ST ROW:  Dec 1 sc as before, work to within 3 sts of end, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sk sl st, 1 sl st in next st, finish row.

3RD ROW:  Dec 1 st, work to within 2 [3] sts of end, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sk sl st, work 1 sl st in next st, finish row.

5TH ROW:  Dec 1 st, work to within 2 sts of end, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

6TH ROW:  Sk sl st, work 1 sl st in next st, finish row.

7TH ROW:  Work 1 sc, dec 1 sc – 2 sc.

8TH ROW:  Work even, turn.

Work 2 sc tog.  Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT:  
Work same as left front to underarm, end on wrong side at front edge.

ARMHOLE:  
Work to within 4 [5] sc of end, ch 1, turn, leave last 4 [5] sc for underarm.

Work 1 row.

NEXT ROW:  Sc to within 3 sts of end, dec 1 st, 1 sc.

Rep dec for armhole shaping every 2nd row 9 [10 times, end at armhole edge – 16 [17] sts.

SHAPE NECK:
1ST ROW:  Work to within 3 sts of end, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sk sl st, 1 sl st in next sc, work to within 3 sts of end, dec 1 st, 1 sc.

3RD ROW:  Work to within 2 [3] sts of end, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sk sl st, 1 sl st in next st, work to end dec as before.

5TH ROW:  Work to within 2 sts of end, 1 sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.

6TH ROW:  Sk sl st, 1 sl st in next st, work to end dec as before.

7TH ROW:  Dec 1 sc, 1 sc, turn.

Work last 2 sts tog.  Fasten off.

SLEEVES:  
With A, ch 31 [35].

Work same as front for 4 rows.

INC ROW:  1 Sc, inc 1 st in next sc by working 2 sc in next st, work to with 2 sc of end, inc 1 st in next st, 1 sc – 32 [36] sc.

Rep inc row every 4th row 6 times – 44 [48] sc.

Work even until 11” from beg, end on wrong side.

Shape raglan as on back – 6 sc.  Fasten off.

CUFFS:  
With A, from right side, work 1 row sc around lower edge of sleeve.  Join B, ch 1, turn.

Work 3 rows with B & 1 row with A.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:  
Sew underarm & sleeve seams.  

Sew in sleeves, sewing raglan edges of sleeves to raglan edges of back & fronts.

JACKET BORDER:
1ST ROW:  Join A at lower right front edge, 64 sc up right front edge, 3 sc in corner, 56 [57] sc around neck, 3 sc in corner, 62 sc down left front edge.  Fasten off.

2ND ROW:  With B, beg at lower right front edge, 1 sc in each sc, 3 sc in each corner sc.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  BUTTONHOLE ROW:  WRONG SIDE:  With B 1 sc in each sc on left front edge, 3 sc in corner, 1 sc in each sc around neck, 3 sc in corner, 1 sc in 1st sc of right front, * ch 2, sk 2 sc for buttonhole, 1 sc in each of next 10 sc; rep from *, end 1 sc in each sc to lower right front edge – 6 buttonholes in all.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  With B, work 1 sc in each sc & in each ch for buttonholes, working 3 sc in each corner.  Fasten off.

5TH ROW:  join 1 at center back of neck, from right side, work 1 sc in each sc on left side of neck, 3 sc in corner, 1 sc in each sc to lower left front edge, 3 sc in corner, work sc on lower edge of band, 1 sc in each st of ch on lower edge, 3 sc in corner, cont up right front & around neck edge to center back.  Join with sl st.  Fasten off.

POCKET FLAPS:  [MAKE 2]:  
With B, ch 13.

1ST ROW:  12 Sc on ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  1 Sc in each sc.  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row once.  Fasten off.

4TH ROW:  Join A at beg of 1st row.

From right side, 2 sc on side edge of flap, 3 sc in corner, 1 sc in each sc on long edge, 3 sc in corner, 2 sc on side edge.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:  
Fasten off all ends neatly.  

Sew pocket flaps to fronts of cardigan with top edge of flap 4 ½” above lower edge & front edge 4” from front edge as shown in photo.
