Vintage 1960’s Man’s Buttoned Cardigan Sweater #978

Attractive button-front cardigan for the special man in your life is easily & quickly done.    A transitional addition to his seasonal wardrobe, & a welcome gift from you!

SIZES: 
40, 42, & 44.  Directions are for size 40 with changes for sizes 42 & 44 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bear Brand De Luxe Knitting Worsted, 4 oz
Or, Fleisher’s Superior Knitting Worsted, 4 oz:  8 [8-9] skeins
Leatherette Piping
Crochet hook #5/G, or size you require to obtain gauge

GAUGE:
7 sc = 2”
4 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:
Chest:  42” [44”-46”]
Width of back at underarm:  21” [22”-23”]
Width of sleeves at underarm:  15” [16”-17”]

NOTE:  Mark 1st row of all pieces for right side.

BACK:  
Ch 74 [78-82] for lower edge.

1ST ROW:  RIGHT SIDE:  Work 1 sc in 2nd & each rem st of ch – 73 [77-81] sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc.

Rep 2nd row for patt.

Work even until there are 64 rows – about 16” – from beg.  Mark for underarm.
SHAPE ARMHOLE:  
DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, draw up lp in each of 1st 2 sc, yo & thru all 3 lps on hk – 1 st dec – work 1 sc in each sc to within 2 sc of end, draw up lp in each of last 2 sc, yo & thru all 3 lps on hk – 71 [75-79] sc.

Rep dec row every 2nd row 8 times – 55 [59-63] sc.

Work even until there are 38 [40-42] rows about 9 ½” [10”-10 ½”] above underarm marker.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
1ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 [5-6] sc, ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc to within 4 [5-6] sc of end, sl st in next sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sk sl st, work 1 sl st in each of next 4 [5-5] sc, ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc to within 4 [5-5] sc of end, sl st in next sc.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sk sl st, work 1 sl st in each of next 5 sc, ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc to within 5  sc of end, sl st in next sc.

4TH ROW:  Same as 3rd row.  Fasten off, leaving 19 [19-21] sc for back neck.

POCKET LINING:  
Ch 21 for lower edge.

Work sc as for back on 20 sts for 22 rows – about 5 ½”.  Fasten off.

Make 2.

RIGHT FRONT:  
Ch 41 [43-45] for lower edge.

Work sc as for back on 40 [42-44] sts until 26 rows from beg, end on wrong side.

POCKET OPENING:
NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 17 [19-21] sc; then work 1 sc in each sc of pocket lining, sk next 20 sc on front for pocket opening, 1 sc in each of last 3 sc.

Work even until there are 64 rows from beg, end on wrong side.  Mark for underarm.

SHAPE ARMHOLE:  
DEC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc to within 2 sc of end, dec as on back – 39 [41-43] sc.

Keep front edge even, rep dec at armhole edge every 2nd row 8 times – 31 [33-35] sc.

Work even until there are 30 [32-34] rows – about 7 ½” [8”-8 ½”] above underarm marker, end on wrong side at front edge.  Fasten off.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDER:  RIGHT SIDE:
NEXT ROW:  Make lp on hk, sk 1st 9 [9-10] sc for neck edge, draw up lp in each of next 2 sc, yo & thru 3 lps, 1 sc in each sc to end.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on each of next 3 rows.

Work 4 rows even, end at neck edge – 18 [20-21] sc.

SHAPE SHOULDER:
1ST ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work to within 4 [5-6] sc of end, sl st in next sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sk sl st, work 1 sl st in each of 4 [5-5] sc, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work to within 5 sc of end, sl st in next sc.  Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT:  
Ch 41 [43-45] for lower edge.

Work sc on 40 [42-44] sts until 10 [12-14] rows from beg, end on wrong side.

BUTTONHOLE ROW:  
Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sc to within 5 sc of end, ch 2, sk 2 sc for buttonhole, 1 sc in each sc to end.

Working 1 sc in each sc & each st of ch on next row, work until 26 rows from beg, end on wrong side.

POCKET OPENING:
NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work 3 sc; then work 1 sc in each sc of pocket lining, sk next 20 sc on front for pocket opening, finish row, rep buttonhole on size 40 only

Cont to correspond to right front rep buttonhole every 16th row – 15 rows bet buttonholes – until there are 30 [32-34] rows above underarm marker, end on wrong side at armhole edge having 3 rows above 6th buttonhole – 31 [33-35] sc.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDER:
NEXT ROW:  Work to within 11 [11-12] sc of front edge, draw up lp in each of next 2 sc, yo & thru all 3 lps; ch 1, turn, leaving 9 [9-10] sc free for neck edge.

Complete to correspond to right front.

SLEEVES:  
Ch 40 [42-44] for lower edge.

Work sc on 39 [41-43] sts until 6 rows from beg.

INC ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each sc to within 1 sc of end, 2 sc in last sc – 41 [43-45] sc.

Rep inc each side every 8th [8th-6th] row 2 [4-4] times; every 10th [8th-8th] row 4 [3-4] times -- 53 [57-61] sc.

Work even until there are 70 rows – about 17 ½” – from beg.  Mark for underarm.

Dec 1 sc each side of next row.

Rep dec each side every 2nd row 6 times; every row 13 [15-17] times – 13 sc.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:  
Sew seams.  

Sew in sleeves, matching underarm seams.

Sew sides & lower edge of pocket linings to wrong side of fronts.

NECKBAND:  
From right side, work 1 row sc around neck, holding in to desired size.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, work sc dec 1 st at beg & end of row.

Rep 2nd row, 4 times.  Fasten off.

CROCHET EDGING:  
From right side, beg on lower edge at right underarm seam, work 1 row sc around entire outer edge keeping work flat & inc 1 st at lower edge of each front; join with sl st in 1st sc.  Fasten off.

2ND ROW:  Working loosely from same side as last row, work 1 sl st at base of each sc in prev row, inserting hk in same place as sc was worked into.  Fasten off.

Work same edging on lower edge of sleeves & edge of pocket openings.

If desired, trim all edges with leatherette piping as shown in photo.

Cover buttons with leatherette, or buy buttons.
