Vintage 1960s Mod Umbrella Tote Bag #1143
MATERIALS:
American Thread Aunt Lydias Heavy Rug Yarn
3 - 70 yd skeins Lilac
2 - 70 yd skeins each Peacock & Chartreuse
Plastic Crochet Hook Size J
½ yd Clear Plastic
12” length of Black Velcro

GAUGE:
3 sc = 1”

BAG:
With Lilac ch 2, 3 sc in 2nd st from hk, ch 2 to turn all rows. 

2ND ROW: Work in back lp of sts thru out, 2 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, cut Lilac (2 sts inc). 

3RD &  4TH ROWS: With Peacock 2 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in each rem sc, cut Peacock. 

5TH & 6TH ROWS: With Chartreuse re­p last 2 rows.

Rep last 2 rows for patt, working stripes as follows: next 2 rows Lilac, next 2 rows Peacock, next 2 rows Chartreuse.

Work in patt in­c 2 sts in every row until there are 57 sc, ch 2, turn. 

NEXT ROW: Sk 1st sc, 1 sc in each sc to within last 2 sc, sk next sc, sc in last sc.

With next color cont stripes as established, rep last row until 3 sts rem, ch 2, turn. 

NEXT ROW: Sk 1st sc, * insert hk in next st, pull yarn thru, rep from * once, yo hk & pull thru all lps, cut yarn.

Work another section in same manner.

UMBRELLA CASE:
With Peacock ch 6, 1 sc in 2nd st from hk and in each rem st of ch, join, ch 2, turn. 

2ND RND: With Peacock & working in back lp of sts only, 2 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in each rem sc, join, ch 2, turn.

Work stripes same as bag, rep last row until there are 15 sc.

Then work even, working 1 sc in each sc, joining & turning each rnd until there are 7 Lilac stripes, cut yarn.

HANDLES: (MAKE 2).
With Lilac ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd st from hk, do not join this or following rnds, place marker at beg of rnd. 

NEXT RND: Work thru both lps of sts, 1 sc in each sc.

Rep last rnd until handle measures 11” from beg, cut yarn leaving length.

Fill handle with lengths of yarn & draw sts of end tog, fasten securely.

FINISHING:
Block both sections of bag to 14” square.

Weave both sections tog having 1st Lilac stripe in right lower edge corner matching rows.

Weave 3 sides tog, leave top open.

Tack umbrella case across front as shown, matching stripes.

Attach Lilac at side seam of bag, sc in same sp, then work 1 sc in each row all around top, join in 1st sc.

NEXT RND: Work in both lps of sts, 1 sc in each sc, join, cut yarn.

Sew handles in place.

Cut plastic 29” x 15”, fold in half, sew lower & side seams.

Place in bag & tack in position.

Cut another piece of plastic 12” x 6”, sew seam, gather one edge.

Place in um­brella case & tack in position.

Sew Velcro in position across in­side top of bag.

“HOW-TO” INSTRUCTIONS:

1. MAKE TWISTED CORD:
Cut strands as directed.
Knot ends and put knotted end over a stationary hk.
Twist strands until they buckle; then double piece and slip other end over hk.
Twist in opposite direction and knot free ends to prevent raveling.
Draw cords in opposite directions through beading. Tie and trim ends.
2. LINE FRAME BAGS:
1ST: Meas inside edge of 1 side of Metal Bag Frame; add 1”. This is width of lining.

2ND: Meas height of crocheted piece, incl ½ of bottom of bag [if there is one]; add 1”. This is length of lining.

3RD: Cut 4 pieces of lining material, follow above meas.

4TH: Cut 2 pieces of crinoline ½” shorter, but same width as lining pieces.

5TH:
 With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew 2 crinoline pieces in same way.

Slip lining piece inside crinoline piece, turn lining over at top edge & tack [right side of lining is inside].

Sew 3 edges of rem 2 lining pieces. Turn right side out.

Slip crinoline piece inside this piece.

Turn top edge down between other thicknesses & sew in place.

Top edge of lining should be same meas as inner edge of open frame.

3. LINE DRAWSTRING BAGS:
1ST: Meas ½ of top edge of crocheted bag. This is width of lining.

2ND & 3RD: Same as for Frame Bag.

4TH:  With right sides facing, sew 2 pieces of lining tog along 1 width & 2 height edges, allow ½” for seams.

Sew rem 2 pieces in same way. Turn right side out.

Slip 1st piece inside 2nd piece.

Turn both top edges to inside [bet both thicknesses] & overcast.
