1960s Mod Beach Party Bikini #1273

A ‘fabric’ stitch is used to create this cotton bikini…alternating single & double crochets. Leg & waist edges are worked over elastic for a snug fit. The top edges of bra & briefs are trimmed in a pretty picot edging.

SIZE:                                                                                                                   

Small [8-10] & Medium [12-14.

Directions are for Small with changes for Medium in brackets.


MEASUREMENTS:

Body Bust = 31 ½”-32 ½” [34”-36”]
Finished Bust = 33” [36”]


MATERIALS:

Mercerized Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 175 yd Balls: 8 [9] Orange
1 Steel Crochet Hook #1
1 pkg Round Elastic
2 Hooks & Eyes
1 yd Ribbon ¼” wide


TENSION/GAUGE:

13 Sts = 2”
5 Rows = 1”

Doubled strands of yarn are used for entire bikini.


PANTS:

FRONT:
Beg at crotch, CH 18 [22].


1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk, * DC in next CH, SC in next CH, rep from * across = 17 [21] sts. Turn.

2ND ROW: CH 3 [counts as 1 DC], * SC in next DC, DC in next SC, rep from * across. CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: SC in 1st DC, * DC in next SC, SC in next DC, rep from * across, end SC in top of CH 3. Turn.

4TH & 5TH ROWS: Rep 2nd & 3rd rows.

6TH ROW [INC ROW]: CH 3, SC in 1st SC, DC & SC in next DC, work in patt to last 2 sts, SC & DC in each of last 2 sts = 21 [25] sts. CH 1, turn.

7TH – 9TH ROWS: Work even in patt.

10TH ROW: Rep 6th row = 25 [29] sts.

11TH – 13TH ROWS: Work even in patt.

14TH ROW: Rep 6th row = 29 [33] sts.

15TH ROW: Rep 3rd row.

16TH – 20TH ROWS: Rep 6th & 3rd rows alt, end with 6th row = 41 [45] sts.

21ST ROW: SC & DC in each of 1st 2 sts, work in patt to last 2 sts, DC & SC in each of last 2 sts, drop lp from hk; do not turn.

With a separate doubled strand of cotton, CH 26 [28], join to 1st st at beg of row, cut thread.
Pick up dropped lp, CH 28 [30], turn.

22ND ROW: SC in 4th CH from hk, * DC in next st, SC in next st, rep from * across CH, work in patt across center section, work in patt across other CH = 97 [105] sts. CH 1, turn.

** 23RD – 26TH ROWS: Rep 3rd & 2nd rows alt.

27TH ROW [DEC ROW]: Keep last lp of each st on hk, SC in 1st DC, DC in next SC, YO & thru all 3 lps on hk, work in patt to last 2 sts; keep last lp of each st on hk, DC in next SC, SC in next DC, YO & thru all 3 lps on hk. CH 1, turn.

Rep 23rd – 27th rows, 3 times more.

Work even in patt for 2 [4] rows. End off.

BACK:

1ST – 3RD ROWS: Work same as front.


4TH ROW: CH 3, SC in 1st SC, DC & SC in next DC, work in patt to last 2 sts, SC & DC in each of last 2 sts = 21 [25] sts. CH 1, turn.

5TH ROW: SC & DC in each of 1st 2 sts, work in patt to last 2 sts, DC & SC in each of last 2 sts = 25 [29] sts.

6TH & 7TH ROWS: Rep 4th & 5th rows = 33 [37] sts.

8TH ROW: Rep 4th row = 37 [41] sts.

9TH ROW: Work in patt.

10TH – 13TH ROWS: Rep 4th & 9th rows alt = 45 [49] sts.

14TH & 15TH ROWS: Rep 4th & 5th rows = 53 [57] sts.

16TH – 21ST ROWS: Rep 4th & 9th rows alt = 65 [69] sts.

22ND – 24TH ROWS: rep 4th, 5th & 4th rows = 77 [81] sts.

25TH – 30TH ROWS: Rep 9th & 4th rows alt = 89 [93] sts.

33RD ROW: Rep 9th row.

34TH ROW: Rep 4th row = 101 [105] sts. Drop lp from hk, do not turn.

With separate double strand of cotton, CH 10 [12], join to 1st st at beg of row; cut thread.

Pick up dropped lp, CH 11 [13], turn.

35TH ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk, * DC in next CH, SC in next CH, rep from * across CH, work in patt across center section, work in patt across other CH = 121 [129] sts. CH 3, turn.

36TH ROW: Rep 2nd row.

Work from ** of front. End off.

FINISHING:

Sew crotch & side seams.


Work 1 row of Sc around each leg opening, working over elastic.

Adjust elastic; knot & weave in ends.

EDGING:

1ST RND: From RS, beg at center back, work 1 row of SC around top edge, working over elastic & having multiple of 5 sts.


Sl st in 1st SC. Adjust elastic; knot & weave in ends.

2ND RND: CH 1, SC in same SC, SC in each of next 4 SC, CH 4, sl st in last SC made, * SC in each of next 5 SC, CH 4, sl st in last SC made, rep from * around, sl st in 1st SC.

3RD RND: Sl st across 1st 2 SC, CH 8, turn, sl st in 5th CH from hk for picot, CH 1, DC in same SC, * CH 3, sk next 4 SC, DC in next SC, CH 5, sl st in 4th CH from hk, CH 1, DC in same SC, rep from * around, CH #, sl st in 3rd CH of CH 8. End off.

Work as for 1st half for 3 rows. Cut thread; turn.


Sk 30 sts, join thread in next st, work in patt to end of row.

Rep from 4th row of 1st half.

FINISHING:

Sew center seam.


EDGING:

Work along opp side of starting CH, join double strand of cotton in 1st st, SC in each st across; work SC, CH 1, SC in corner st; SC in each row across short end; SC, CH 1, SC in corner; SC in each st to beg of curved edge, place marker on work; work 80 [90] Sc around curved edge to center, sl st in seam, work rem of rnd to corres, join with sl st in 1st SC.


NEXT ROW: Sl st in each st across lower edge; end off.

NEXT ROW: From RS, join cotton in 1st st at right top edge, CH 1, SC in same st, * SC in each of 5 SC, CH 4, sl st in last SC for picot, rep from * across top edge [have picot at center], end SC in each of last 4 sts, turn.

NEXT ROW: Sl st in each of 1st 2 sts, SC in next st, CH 8, sl st in 5th CH from hk for picot, CH 1, DC in same st with SC, * CH 3, sk next 4 sts, DC in next st, CH 5, sl st in 4th CH from hk, CH 1, DC in same st with DC [picot shell], rep from * to 3rd st before 1st picot to right of center picot, [CH 1, sk 4 sts, picot shell in next st] 3 times, CH 3, sk next 4 sts, picot shell in next st, rep from 1st * to 2nd * across. End off.

STRAPS [MAKE 2]:

CH 4, SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each of next 2 CH. CH 1, turn each row.


Work in rows of 3 SC until strap is 17” [18”]. End off.

Sew ribbon to 1 side of straps.

Sew straps in place.

Sew hooks & eyes at short ends.
