1960s Mod Lace Bikini & Jacket Set #1272


White beach coat & bikini are companion pieces, edge-trimmed in Aqua. Coat is made with an easy shell pattern & has a drawstring yoke. Bikini is worked tightly in single crochet. Briefs are snugged with a cord thru the top.

SIZE:

Small [6-8] & Medium [10-12].

Directions are for Small with changes for Medium in brackets.


MATERIALS:

Orlon Knitting Worsted Weight, 4 oz Skeins:
BIKINI:  2 [3] White, Main Color [MC]
JACKET:  4 [5] White, Main Color [MC]
1 Aqua, Contrast Color [CC] for both
1 Crochet Hook #F/3-4
1 Crochet Hook #G/5
1 Crochet Hook #H/6
10” Elastic ½”
Heavy Duty Thread, White

MEASUREMENTS:

Body Bust = 30 ½ ” -31 ½” [32 ½”-34”]
Finished Jacket Bust = 40” [44”]

TENSION/GAUGE:

BIKINI, #G/5 Hook
4 Sts = 1”; 11 Rows = 2”
JACKET, #H/6 Hook
3 patts = 4”

BIKINI:

BRIEFS:
FRONT:
Beg at crotch, with G hk & MC, CH 15 [17].

1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across = 14 [16] SC. CH 1, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in each SC around. CH 1, turn.

Rep last row for 10 rows more.

Inc 1 st at end of next 2 rows, then inc 1 st each side of next 6 [7] rows = 28 [32] SC. CH 4 at end of last row.

NEXT ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each of next 2 CH, SC in each SC across = 31 [35] SC. CH 4, turn.

Rep last row 7 times = 52 [56] SC. CH 9, turn at end of last row.

NEXT ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each of next 7 CH, SC in each SC across, CH 9, turn.

Rep last row once = 68 [72] SC. CH 1, turn.

Work even until side edge meas 3 ½” [4”] above last inc row, approx 9” [9 ½”] from start. End off.


BACK:

Work same as front for 2 rows = 14 [16] SC. Ch 1, turn.

Inc 1 Sc at end of next 2 rows, then inc 1 SC each side every row 26 [27] times = 68 [72] SC.

Work even until side edge meas 3 ½” [4”] above last inc row. End off.

FINISHING:

Sew side & crotch seams.

CASING:

From RS, join MC in side seam. CH 3, Dc in next st, * CH 1, sk next st, DC in next st, rep from * around, join with sl st in top of starting CH. End off.

EDGING:

From RS, with #F hk & MC, work 1 row SC around each leg opening; join with sl st in 1st SC. End off.

From RS, work from left to right, with CC, work 1 row SC around each leg opening. End off.

CORD:

With #G hk & double strand of CC, make 48” CH.

Lace thru casing.

BRA:

CUP:
With #G hk & MC, CH 2.

1ST RND: 6 SC in 2nd CH from hk; do not join rnds. Mark beg of rnds.

2ND RND: [3 SC in next SC, SC in next SC] 3 times = 12 SC.

3RD RND: [SC in next SC, 2 SC in next SC, SC in each of next 2 SC] 3 times = 15 SC.

4TH RND: [SC in next 2 SC, 3 SC in next SC, SC in each of next 2 SC] 3 times = 21 SC.

5TH RND: [SC in next 3 SC, 3 SC in next SC, SC in each of next 3 SC] 3 times = 27 SC.

6TH RND: Work 2 SC in 2nd SC of each inc grp = 3 sts inc.

7TH RND: Work 3 SC in 2nd SC of each inc grp = 6 sts inc.

8TH RND: Work 3 SC in 2nd SC of each inc grp = 6 sts inc.

Rep 6th – 8th rnds until 81 [90] SC around, end rnd 16 [18]. End off.

Work 2nd cup in same way.

BACK STRAP:

With #G hk & MC, CH 79 [83].

1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across = 78 [82] SC. CH1, turn.

NEXT ROW: SC in each SC across. End off.

SHOULDER STRAPS:

With #G hk & MC, CH 51.

SC in 2nd CH from hk & in each CH across.

Work on opp side of starting CH, SC in each CH across. End off.

Weave 4 sts at point of cups tog for center front.

Sew back strap to points at each side of cups.

Sew shoulder straps in place.

From RS, with #F hk & CC, work from left to right, SC around all edges.

Sew ends of elastic securely to sides of cups inside back strap.

With strong thread, work catch sts across back strap over elastic to form casing & hold elastic in place.

JACKET:

Body & sleeves are worked from underarm to lower edge.

BODY:

Beg at underarm edge of back & fronts, with #H hk & MC, CH 182 [200].

1ST ROW: SC in 2nd CH from hk, * sk next 2 CH, CH 1, work shell of [DC, CH 1] 3 times in next CH, sk next 2 CH, SC in next CH, rep from * across = 30 [33] shells. CH 6, turn.

2ND ROW: SC in center DC of 1st shell, * CH 3, DC in next SC, CH 3, SC in center DC of next shell, rep from * across, end CH 3, DC in last SC. CH 1, turn.

3RD ROW: SC in 1st DC, * CH 1, shell of [DC, CH1] 3 times in next SC, SC in next DC, rep from * across, end last rep SC in 3rd CH of turning CH. CH 6, turn.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows for patt until piece meas 22” from start or desired length to underarm, end patt 3rd row. End off.

Check gauge; piece should meas 40” [44”] wide.

SLEEVES [MAKE 2]:

Beg at underarm edge with #H hk & MC, CH 50 [56].

Have 8 [9] shells on patt 1st row, work in shell patt until piece meas 17” from start or desired length to underarm, end patt on 3rd row. End off.

Check gauge; piece should meas 10 ¾” [12”] wide.

YOKE:

Join MC in base of 1st SC on starting CH of body, CH 3, [DC in base of next shell, CH 1, DC in next SC, CH 1] 6 [7] times for right front; work across starting CH on sleeve, * sk 1st SC & shell, work DC in next SC, CH 1, DC in next shell, CH 1, DC in next SC, CH 1, [DC, CH 1, DC] in next shell, [CH 1, DC in next SC, CH 1, work DC, CH 1, DC in next shell] 3 [4] times, CH 1, DC in next SC, CH 1, DC in next shell, CH 1, DC in next SC, sk last shell & SC on sleeve * , sk 1 shell, SC & 1 more shell on body for right underarm, CH 1, DC in next SC, [CH 1, DC in next shell, CH 1, DC in next SC] 14 [15] times for back, CH 1, rep from 1st * to 2nd * across 2nd sleeve, sk next shell, SC & 1 shell on body for left underarm, CH 1, DC in next SC, ** CH 1, DC in next shell, CH 1, DC in next SC, rep from ** to center front edge [left front] = 89 [99] DC, counting starting CH-4 as 1 DC.

3RD ROW:  CH 4 [counts as 1 DC, CH 1], * work to 1 DC before raglan dec, work raglan dec over next DC & DC after raglan dec, rep from * 3 times, finish row.

4TH & 5TH ROWS: Rep 3rd row, dec 2 DC evenly spaced across back in addition to raglan dec.

6TH ROW: Rep 3rd row. End off. Turn.

7TH ROW: With CC, rep 3rd row. End off.

FINISHING:


Sew sleeve & underarm seams.

CORD:


With double strand CC, make 46” CH for tie.

Weave thru neck edge.
