Vintage 1960’s Lacy Shell Stitch Cardigan Sweater #983

SIZE: 
10-12, 14-16, & 18-20.
Directions are for 10-12, with changes for 14-16 & 18-20 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bear Brand or Fleisher’s Souffle: 5 [6-7] balls
Boye crochet hook #4/F, or size you require to obtain gauge

GAUGE:
2 shells = 2”
4 rows = 2”

MEASUREMENTS:
Width at bust, buttoned:  35 ½” [39 ½”-43 ½”]
Width of back at underarm:  16” [18”-20”]
Width of sleeves at underarm:  15” [17”-19”]

BODY:  Ch 173 [193-213].

PATTERN:
1ST ROW:  RIGHT SIDE:  1 Dc in 5th ch from hk, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, * ch 1, sk 1 st of ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts; rep from * across foundation ch – 34 [38-42] shells.

2ND ROW:  Ch 4, turn, sk 4 dc, 1 sc in ch-1 sp, * ch 4, sk 4 dc, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp: rep from * across row, end ch 4, sk 4 dc, 1 sc in sp before turning ch – 34 [38-42] sps.

3RD ROW:  Ch 4, turn, working over ch, 4 dc in 1st ch-4 sp, * ch 1, working over ch, 4 dc in next ch-4 sp; rep from * to end – 34 [38-42] shells.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rows, 9 times more – 11 shell rows – about 11” from beg, end on right side.

Divide for back & fronts as follows:

LEFT FRONT:  
Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in ch-1 sp after 1st shell, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 6 [7-8] times more.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 4 dc in 1st ch-4 sp, * ch-1, 4 dc in next ch-4 sp; rep from * across, end 4 dc in turning ch sp -- 8 [9-10] shells.  Fasten off.

BACK:  
With wrong side toward you, sk next 2 shells of last complete row for left underarm, join yarn in next ch-1 sp, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 13 [15-17] times more.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 4 dc in 1st ch-4 sp, * ch 1, 4 dc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * across, end 4 dc in turning ch sp – 14 [16-18] shells.  Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT:  
With wrong side facing you, sk next 2 shells of last complete row for right underarm, join yarn in next ch-1 sp, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 7 [8-9] times more, working last sc in turning ch sp.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 4, turn, work across row – 8 [9-10] shells.  Fasten off.

SLEEVES:  
Ch 48 [58-58] sts.

Work patt as on body for 3 rows, end on right side – 9 [11-11] shells.

INC ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in sp bet 2nd & 3rd dc of shell, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 7 [9-9] times, ch 4, 1 sc in sp bet 2nd & 3rd dc of last shell, ch 4, 1 sc in turning ch sp – 11 [13-13] sps.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 4, turn, work as for patt 3rd row – 11 [13-13] shells.

Work 6 [6-2] rows even.

Rep inc row – 13 [15-15] sps.

Work 7 [7-5] rows even.

Rep inc row – 15 [17-17] sps.

FOR SIZE 18-20 ONLY:  Work 5 rows even.  

Rep inc row – 19 sps.

FOR ALL SIZES:  Work 5 rows even,  end on right side – 15 [17-19] shells.

Sleeve should meas about 13” from beg.  Fasten off.

NEXT ROW:  With wrong side of sleeve facing you, sk 1st shell for underarm, join yarn in next ch-1 sp, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 12 [14-16] times, leave last shell free for underarm – 13 [15-17] sps.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 4, turn, work as for patt 3rd row – 13 [15-17] shells.  Fasten off.

With right side of all pieces facing you, tack top corner of last shell on last row of right front to top corner of 1st shell on last row of sleeve; tack top corner of last shell on last row of same sleeve to top corner of 1st shell on last row of back; tack other sleeve to left side of back & left front in same way, thus joining all pieces in 1 continuous row.

YOKE:  
With wrong side facing you, join yarn at left front edge, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp *; rep bet stars across left front, left sleeve, back, right sleeve & right front, working sc in sp bet joined shells at each side of sleeves – 56 [64-72] sps.

1ST DEC ROW:  Ch 4, turn, work as for patt 3rd row until there are 7 [8-9] shells, omit ch 1 after last shell, 1 dc in last sp on right front, ch 1 & mark this ch st for seam st, 1 dc in 1st sp on sleeve, omit ch 1, 4 dc in next sp, * ch 1, 4 dc in next sp *; rep bet stars 9 [11-13] times, omit ch 1 after last shell, 1 dc in last sp on sleeve, ch 1 & mark this ch for seam st, 1 dc in 1st sp on back, omit ch 1, 4 dc in next sp, rep bet stars 11 [13-15] times, 1 dc in last sp on back, ch 1 & mark for seam st, 1 dc in 1st sp on sleeve, 4 dc in next sp, rep bet stars 10 [12-14] times, 1 dc in last sp on sleeve, ch 1 & mark for seam st, 1 dc in 1st sp on left front, 4 dc in next sp, rep bet stars 6 [7-8] times – 48 [56-64] full shells.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 4, turn, 1 sc in 1st ch-1 sp, ¥ * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp *; rep bet stars to within 1 full shell of marked ch st, ch 4, 1 sc in marked ch-1 sp & mark for seam st, ch 4, 1 sc in sp after next full shell; rep from ¥ 3 times more, rep bet stars to end – 48 [56-64] sps.

2ND DEC ROW:  Ch 4, turn, * work as for patt 3rd row to with 1 sp of marked st, omit ch 1 after last shell, 1 dc in next sp, ch 1 & mark for seam st, 1 dc in next sp, 4 dc in next sp, ch 1, 4 dc in next sp; rep from * 3 times, work to end as for 3rd row – 40 [48-56] full shells.

Rep last 2 rows 3 [4-5 times more.

Work across as for 2nd row – 16 sps.

Work patt 3rd row, omit decs – 16 full shells.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:  
Sew sleeve seams.

Sew 2 patts left free at underarm edges of cardigan to 2 patts left free at underarm edge of sleeves.

BORDER:  
Beg at center back of neck, from right side, 1 sc in center ch-1 sp, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from *, end 1 sc in corner, ch 4, 1 sc on side edge in sp below shell, cont down left front in this way, end I sc in corner, ch 4, 1 sc on lower edge in ch-1 sp after shell, cont along lower edge, end ch 4, 1 sc in corner; complete right front edge & neck edge to correspond, end ch 4, join with sl st in 1st sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, do not turn, 4 sc in each ch-4 sp, 3 sc in each corner st, join as before.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, do not turn, 1 sc in each sc, 3 sc in each corner, join with sl st in 1st sc.

4TH ROW:  BUTTONHOLE:  Mark position of 7 buttonholes on right front edge, having bottom buttonhole 1 st from lower edge, top buttonhole 1 st from neck edge, rem buttonholes evenly spaced bet. 

Ch 1, do not turn, work as for 3rd row to lower edge of right front, ending with 3 sc in corner, * ch 2, sk 2 sc for buttonhole, 1 sc in next sc; work sc to within 1 sc of next marker; rep from * until 7 buttonholes are made, work 3 sc in corner, finish row; join.

5TH ROW:  Same as 3rd row, 1 sc in each ch st over buttonholes; join.

6TH ROW:  Same as 2nd row, omit incs at corners; join.  Fasten off.

CUFFS:  
Beg on lower edge of sleeve, from right side, 1 sc at seam, * ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * around, end ch 4, join with sl st in 1st sc – 9 [11-11] sps.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, do not turn, 4 sc in 1st ch-4 sp, * 4 [3-3] sc in next sp, 4 sc in next sp; rep from * to end; join.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, do not turn, 1 sc in each sc; join.

Rep 3rd row, 3 times more.  Fasten off.
