1960s Georgetown Knit Dress & Helmet #1154
SIZE:
Directions are for Size 8.
Change for Sizes 10, 12 & 14 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva
Nantuk Sports Yarn 2 oz skein

1 Pair Boye Knitting Needles #5
2 sets of bobbins

GAUGE:
11 sts = 2”
15 rows = 2”

NOTE:
When changing colors, pick up next color to be used from under dropped color to prevent hole.

BACK:
With Color D - cast on 121 for all sizes.

K 1 row & P 1 row for 7 rows, inc 1 each side on last row.

K next P row for turn.

Wind 3 bobbins with Color A, 6 bobbins with Color B, 6 bobbins with Color C & 3 bobbins with Color D.

Join colors where necessary, work on 123 sts:

1ST ROW: * K 1 A, 4 B, 4 C, 24 D, 4 C, 4 B, rep from * twice more.

2ND ROW: P with matching colors.

Working in St St follow chart start with:

3RD ROW  DRESS & rep 1 sts 3 times.

Work to top of chart. See chart below.

Break off Colors B, C & D.

With Color A only - K next row dec 1 st each side 

FOR SIZE 8 ONLY & inc 1 st each side FOR SIZE 14 ONLY.

NOTE:
Directions are for 36¾”(37”-37¼”-37½”) dress meas from hemline to back of neck, allow 1” for blocking.

To lengthen, add rows before 1st dec row.

Cont in St St on 121(123-123-125) sts to 11”(11”-12”-12”) above turn, end on wrong side.

Dec 1 each side on next row, then every 4th row 5(5-3-2) times.

Work on 109(111-115-119) sts to 14½” above turn, end on wrong side.

Dec 1 st each side on next row, then every 1¼”(1½”-1½”-1¾”) 8(7-7-6) times more.

Work on the 91(95-99-105) sts to 28½” above turn, end on wrong side.

Width across back is 16¾”(17¼”-18”-19”).

ARMHOLES:
Bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 each side every row 5 times then dec 1 each side every other row 2(3-4-5) times.

Work on the 71(73-75-79) sts to 6¾”(7”-7¼”-71/2”) above underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across shoulders is 12¾”(13¼”-13½”-14¼”).

SHOULDERS:
Bind off 6(6-6-8) at beg of next 4(2-2-2) rows then bind off 7 sts at beg of next 2(4-4-4) rows. 33(33-35-35) sts rem.

FACING:
Inc 1 each side every other row work 10 rows in St St. Bind off.

FRONT:
Work same as back until 71(73-75-79) sts rem, end on wrong side.

Join Color B & work 6 rows.

With Color A - work 12 rows, join Color C & work 6 rows.

Continue with Color A to 5”(5¼”-5½”-5¾”) above underarm, end on right side.

NECK:
Work across 28(29-29-31) & sl them to a holder, work center 15(15-17-17) & sl them to 2nd holder, work to end.

Bind off 3 at neck twice.

Dec 1 at same edge every other row 3 times.

Work on the 19(20-20-22) sts until armhole matches back armhole, end at armhole edge.

SHOULDER:
Bind off 6(6-6-8) at armhole 2(1-1-1) times, then bind off 7 at same edge 1(2-2-2) times.

Start at neck work other side.

SLEEVES:
With Color A - cast on 39(41-41-43). K 1 row & P 1 row for 5 rows.

K next P row for turn.

Cont in St St work stripes as follows:
8 rows of Color A, 6 rows of Color B, 12 rows of Color A & 6 rows of Color C 

AT THE SAME TIME inc 1 each side every 8th row 4 times.

Cont with Color A only.

Inc 1 each side every 10th row 6 times then every 4th row 3(3-4-4) times.

Work on the 65(67-69-71) sts to 16” or desired length above turn, end on wrong side.

Width across sleeve is 11¾”(12¼”-12½”-13”).

SLEEVE CAP:
Bind off 3 at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 each side every other row until 27 sts rem.

Bind off 3 at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off.

FRONT NECK FACING:
With A - pick up & K 49(49-51-51) sts around neck including holder.

Inc 1 each side every other row, work 9 rows in St St. Bind off.

Sew shoulder seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Sew sleeve & underarm seams.

Turn in neck facing & sew in place.

Turn up hems & sew in place.

HELMET:
With Color D - cast on 102.

K 1 & P 1 in ribbing for 1”.

K next row for turn.

Wind bobbins as for dress.

Joining colors as needed, work as follows:
1ST ROW: * K 1 A, 4 B, 4 C, 17 D, 4 C, 4 B, rep from * twice more.

2ND ROW: P with matching colors.

Work St St, start with Row 3 of chart for helmet following dotted line & rep the 34 sts 3 times.

Work to top of chart.

Break off Colors B, C & D.

Work 2 rows with Color A. Bind off.

Sew back seam.

Turn in facing & sew in place.

NECKBAND:
On right side with Color A pick up & K 73.

1ST ROWP 1, * K 1, P 1, rep from * across.

2ND ROW: K 1, * P 1, K 1, rep from * across.

Next row P 1, K 1, P 2 tog, yo for buttonhole, work ribbing to end.

Rep Rows 2 & 1.

Bind off in ribbing.

Sew on button.
