1959 Elegant Portrait Collar Mohair Sweater #350


Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14, 16 & 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Bernat Mohair spun [1 oz pull skeins] 14 [15, 16, 17]
OR
Bernat Astrakhan [2 oz skeins] 8 [8, 9, 9]
1 Pair each #5 & #8 Knitting Needles
1 Crochet Hook #F
5 Buttons

GAUGE: 
5 sts = 1”;    
6 rows = 1”

ABBREVIATIONS:
BEG                =  Begin                     
CONT             =  Continue
DEC               =  Decrease               
INC                 =  Increase
K                     =  Knit             
P                     =  Purl
REM               =  Remain                  
ST                   =  Stitch

BACK: 
Using #5 needles, cast on 72 [76, 80, 84] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1”.

Change to #8 needles & cont in ribbing, inc 1 st each end of needle every ¾” 8[8,9,9] times, forming new ribs as sts are inc.

Work even on 88 [92,98,102] sts until piece measures 8 ½” [8 ½”, 9”, 9”].

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES: 
At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 3 [4, 5, 6] sts.

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 24 [25, 26, 27] times. 

Bind off rem 34 [34,36,36] sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
Using #5 needles, cast on 42 [44, 46, 48] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1”.

Change to #8 needles & cont in ribbing, inc 1 st at arm edge every ¾” 8[8,9,9] times, forming new ribs as sts are incd.

Work even on 50 [52, 55, 57] sts until piece measures 8 ½” [8 ½”, 9”, 9”].

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE: 
At arm edge bind off 3 [4, 5, 6] sts. 

Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 18 [19, 20, 21] times, end at front edge.

SHAPE NECK: 
At front edge bind off 8 [8, 9, 9] sts. 

Cont to dec 1 st at arm edge every other row 6 times more, at neck edge bind off 5 sts 3 times.  Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping & forming 1st buttonhole when piece measures ½”.

BUTTONHOLE: 
Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work to end of row. 

On next row cast on 3 sts over those bound off previous row.  Make 4 more buttonholes, evenly spaced--the last one to be made 2 rows below start of neck shaping.

SLEEVES: 
Using #5 needles, cast on 44 [48, 50, 54] sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1”.

Change to #8 needles & cont in ribbing, inc 1 st each end of needle every 1” 10 [10, 11, 11] times, forming new ribs as sts are incd.

Work even on 64 [68, 72, 76] sts until piece measures 12 ½” [12 ½”, 13”, 13”].

SHAPE RAGLAN CAP: 
At the beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 3 [4, 5, 6] sts. 

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 24 [25, 26, 27] times. 

Bind off rem 10 sts.

COLLAR: 
Using #5 needles & starting at neck edge, cast on 102 sts. 

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 4 rows.

1st INC ROW:  K 1, p 1, in ribbing for 5 sts, in next st p 1, k 1 & p 1 all in one st [2 sts incd], * k 1, p 1 in ribbing for 9 sts, inc 2 sts in next st, rep from * 8 times more, work last 6 sts --122 sts.

Change to #8 needles & continue in ribbing, dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 12 times--98 sts.  Break off yarn.

With right side facing you, join yarn in 1st st of 1st row & pick up 24 sts on side edge of work, k 1, p 1 in ribbing across 98 sts, pick up 24 sts on other side edge -- 146 sts.

K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 2 rows.

2ND INC ROW:  Work 5 sts, inc 2 sts in next st, * work 11 sts, inc 2 sts in next st, rep from * 10 times more, work last 8 sts -- 170 sts.

K 1, p 1 in ribbing until piece measures 6” AT CENTRE of work.

3RD INC ROW:  Work 7 sts, inc 2 sts in next st, * work 11 sts, inc 2 sts in next st, rep from * 12 times more, work last 6 sts.

K 1, p 1 in ribbing on 198 sts until piece measures 8” AT CENTRE.  Bind off loosely.

FINISHING: 
Sew sleeves to front & back armholes. 

Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

With right side facing you, work 1 row sc around bound off edge of collar.

FRINGE: 
Wind yarn around 3” cardboard. 
Cut at one end. 
Knot 2 strands in each sc.  Trim. 
Sew cast on & side edges of collar to neck edge to within 6 sts of each front edge.

EDGING: 
With right side facing you, join yarn in top of right front band at joining of collar & neck edge & work 1 sc, * working FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, 1 sc in next st to the right of last sc, rep from * around front & lower edges to joining of collar at left front neck edge.  Fasten off. 

Finish buttonholes. 

Sew on buttons.
