1957 Short ‘n Stylish Knit Jacket #465

Quick & easy to knit  this charming jacket in a diamond pattern…stylish lines in design of collar & cuffs…a sophisticated & smart, wardrobe favorite…perfect for any occasion!

SIZE:  
These directions are for small [10-12].  

Changes for medium [14-16] & large [18-20] are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Bernat Cuddlespun 2 oz , 11 [12, 14] skeins
1 Pair each #8 & #10 ½ Straight Knitting Needles
1 DP Needle or Cable Holder
#I Aluminum Crochet Hook

GAUGE:  
4 sts = 1”;      6 rows = 1”

PATTERN STITCH:  
Multiple of 6 sts plus 2.

1ST ROW:  K 1, * k next st wrapping yarn around needle twice, k 4, k next st wrapping yarn around needle twice *, rep bet *s, end k 1.

2ND ROW:  P 1, * sl next st dropping extra wraps off needle to form long st, p 4, sl next st dropping extra wraps off needle to form long st *, rep bet *s, end p 1.

3RD ROW:  K 1, * sl long st onto dp needle & hold in front of work, k next 2 sts, k long st from dp needle, sl next 2 sts onto dp needle & hold in back of work, k long st, k 2 sts from dp needle *, rep bet *s, end k 1.

4TH ROW:  P.

5TH ROW:  K 3, k next st, wrapping yarn around needle twice, rep bet *s of row 1, end k next st wrapping yarn around needle twice, k 3.

6TH ROW:  P 3, sl long st, rep bet *s of row 2, end sl long st, p 3.

7TH ROW:  K 1, * sl next 2 sts onto dp needle & hold in back of work, k long st, k 2 sts from holder, sl long st onto dp needle & hold in front of work, k next 2 sts, k long st from dp needle, rep from *, end k 1.

8TH ROW:  P.

Rep these 8 rows for patt st.

BACK:  
Use #10 ½ needles, cast on 68 [68, 80] sts.  

P 1 row.  

Work even in patt st for 13“[13”,13 ½”], end with either row 4 or row 8.

SHAPE ARMHOLES:  
At beg of next 2 rows bind off 6 [3, 6] sts.  

Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 3 times.  

Work even on 50 [56, 62] sts until armholes meas 7 ½” [8”, 8 ½”].

SHAPE SHOULDERS:  
At beg of each of next 4 rows bind off 5 [6, 7] sts.  

At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 6 [6, 7] sts.  Bind off rem 18 [20, 20] sts.

LEFT FRONT:  
Use #10 ½ needles, cast on 38 [44, 44] sts.  

P 1 row.  

Work even in patt st for 13” [13”, 13 ½”], end with same row as on back at underarm. 

SHAPE ARMHOLE:  
At beg of next row bind off 6 [8, 6] sts.  

Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 [4, 3] times.  

Work even on 29 [32, 35] sts until armhole meas 6 ½” [7”, 7 ½”].

SHAPE NECK:  
At front edge bind off 6 sts twice & 1 [2, 2] sts once.

SHAPE SHOULDER:  
At arm edge bind off 5 [6, 7] sts twice & 6 [6, 7] sts once.

RIGHT FRONT:  
Work to corres to left front, reverse all shaping.

SLEEVES:  
Use #10 ½ needles, cast on 50 [56, 62] sts.  

P 1 row.  

Work even in patt st until piece meas 9” [9 ½”,
9 ½”], end with same row as on back at underarm.

SHAPE CAP:  
At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 6 [5, 6] sts.  

Dec 1 st each end of needle every 4th row 4 [1, 1] times & every other row 6 [13, 15] times.  

At beg of each of next 6 rows bind off 2 sts.  Bind off rem sts.

CUFFS:  
Use #8 needles, cast on 41 [43, 45] sts.  

Work 1 row in seed st.  Cont in seed st, inc 1 st at beg of next row & rep this inc every other row trice more.  Work 1 row even.  At beg of next row dec 1 st & rep this dec every other row twice more.  Bind off rem 41 [43, 45] sts.

COLLAR:  
Use #8 needles, cast on 103 [105, 107] sts.  

Work in seed st, inc 1 st each end of needle every other row 5 times, then dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 5 times.  

Bind off rem 103 [105, 107] sts.


FINISHING:  
Sew underarm, shoulder & sleeve seams.  

Set in sleeves.  

Sew cuffs to sleeves with point overlapping & holding in to desired size.  

With right side facing you, work 1 row sc around all edges of collar & 2 rows sc around all edges of jacket, inc at corners.  

Sew collar to neck edges with ends turned back at front as shown in photo.  

Steam seams lightly
