1934 Sophisticated Palermo Sport Coat #452

Quick & easy to knit this sport coat with the stylish lines of its design & knitted moss stitch pattern…a sophisticated, season-spanning wardrobe favorite…perfect for many occasions!

SIZE: 
This pattern is a vintage size 16, differentiated by the following approx meas: 
            Bust:  35";    Waist:  29";     Hip:  38".

MATERIALS: 
Minerva Scotch Sport Yarn [disc], 10 skeins [approx 148 yds ea]
1 Pair #9 Steel Knitting Needles - 14”

GAUGE: 
4 ½ sts [Moss st] = 1”;    
8 rows = 1”

Back: 
Cast on 95 sts & work even in Moss St [k 1, p 1, on an odd number of sts] for 6”. 

Then work in patt as follows:  [multiple of 24 sts minus 1].  “M” indicates Moss St.   Moss St always beg with a k st in patt.  Where there are decs & incs, make nec adjusts to keep Moss St even.

1st row:  M 10, * k 2, m 22, rep from * end row k 2, m 11.

2nd row:  M 10, * p 4, m 20, rep from * end row p 4, m 9.

3rd row:  M 8, * k 2, m 2, k 2, m 18, rep from * end row k 2, m 2, k 2, m 9.

4th row:  M 8, * p 2, m 4, p 2, m 16, rep from * end row p 2, m 4, p 2, m 7.

5th row:  M 6, * k 2, m 6, k 2, m 14, rep from * end row k 2, m 6, k 2, m 7.

6th row:  M 6, * p 2, m 8, p 2, m 12, rep from * end row p 2, m 8, p 2, m 5.

7th row:  M 4, * k 2, m 10, k 2, m 10, rep from * end row k 2, m 10, k 2, m 5.

8th row:  M 4, * p 2, m 12, p 2, m 8, rep from * end row p 2, m 12, p 2, m 3.

9th row:  M 2, * k 2, m 14, k 2, m 6, rep from * end row k 2, m 14, k 2, m 3.

10th row:  M 2, * p 2, m 16, p 2, m 4, rep from * end row p 2, m 16, p 2, k 1.

11th row:  * K 2, m 18, k 2, m 2, rep from * end row k 2, m 18, k 3.

12th row:  * P 2, m 20, p 2, rep from * end p 2, m 20, p 1.

13th row:  * M 22, k 2, rep from * end m 22, k 1.

14th row:  Same as Row 12.

15th row:  Same as Row 11.

16th row:  Same as Row 10.

17th row:  Same as Row 9.

18th row:  Same as Row 8.

19th row:  Same as Row 7.

20th row:  Same as Row 6.

21st row:  Same as Row 5.

22nd row:  Same as Row 4.

23rd row:  Same as Row 3.

24th row:  Same as Row 2.

These 24 rows form patt in which body of coat is worked. 

Work 7 patts dec 1 st each side every 6” 3 times, & be careful to keep both diamond & Moss St patt even. 

When work meas 27” from start, work dec for raglan armhole as follows:  * dec 1 st each side every 3rd row once, then 1 st each side every other row 3 times.  Rep from * until 23 sts rem on needle. 

At same time, when 7 ½ patts have been worked, move Moss St borders on each side of central patt one st toward center every row by working all sts in Moss St except 2 central diamonds & their borders. 

When these 2 diamonds are comp [8 patts] work all sts in Moss St, except one central diamond & its borders. 

When this diamond is comp & its borders brought to a point, work all sts in Moss St. 

When only 23 sts rem on needle, * work across row leave last 2 sts on left-hand needle, turn; rep from * leave 2 more sts at each end every row until only 11 sts are being worked. 

Break yarn, place all sts on one needle, bind off.

Right Front: 
Cast on 67 sts & work even in Moss St for 6”. 

Work over 20 sts [border] then work rest of sts in patt. 

These first 20 sts are worked even in Moss St entire length of front for border. 

Dec 1 st at underarm side every 6” 3 times. 

At same time, when work meas 18 ½” from start, work from front edge, work over 32 sts bind off 21 sts [pocket], work over last 12 sts.

On the next row cast on 21 sts over those bound off. 

When work meas 27” from start, work decs at armhole side same as back, moving Moss St, in 1 st from underarm toward border every row until all sts are being worked in Moss St. 

At same time, when front meas 30” from start, working from front edge, work over 10 sts, bind off 4 sts [buttonhole], work across row.

On next row cast on 4 sts over those bound off. 

Work another buttonhole in same manner 5” above this first one. 

When there are only 31 sts on needle, place sts on a thread or st holder. 

Pick up 21 sts on upper edge of pocket opening, & work even in Moss St for 5”.  Bind off. 

Sew in place.

Left Front: 
Work to corres, omitting buttonholes.

Sleeves: 
Cast on 71 sts & work even in Moss St for 4”. 

Work in patt for 12” inc 1 st each side every 3” 3 times. 

When sleeve meas 16” from start, dec on both sides same as back, moving Moss St 1 st. toward center every row from each side until all sts are being worked in Moss St. 

When 6 sts rem, bind off. 

Sew sleeves in place, sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Collar: 
Pick up 31 sts of right front from sts holder, pick up 6 sts at top of right sleeve, 23 sts at back of neck, 6 sts at top of sleeve, & 31 sts of left front. 

Work even in Moss St for 3”, bind off. 

Overcast buttonholes, & sew buttons in place.
