1955 Infant’s Afghan Stitch Sweater 3-Piece Set #B220

MATERIALS:
6 oz Baby Yarn 3-Ply
45 yds Angora Yarn Ball
1 Bone Crochet Hook #2 – 5”
1 Bone Crochet Hook #6 – 10”

GAUGE/TENSION:
6 ½ sts = 1”
5 rows = 1”

SWEATER:
BACK:
USE #6 HK.
CH 73 sts.

Draw up lp in 2nd st from hk, [LEAVE ON NEEDLE] & in each of rem CH sts.

WORK OFF AS FOLLOWS:
YO & draw thru end lp, * YO & pull  thru 2 lps, rep from * to end of row.

2ND ROW:  [LP THAT REMS ON HK IS 1ST ST OF THIS ROW]; Pick up lp thru 2nd & all following vertical bars, retain lps on hk.

Work off as shown for 1st row.

Rep 2nd row for patt.

Make 9 rows of afghan st.

10TH ROW: Dec 1 st at each end of this row [TO DEC – INSERT HK UNDER 2ND & 3RD BARS FROM EDGE].

Work in afghan st make dec every 4th row, 4 times more = 63 sts.

Work even until 30 rows are compl [APPROX 6”].

NEXT ROW:  RAGLAN DECS: Insert hk under 2 bars & pull 1 lp thru [DECS]; work across row to within 3 sts of end; make dec; work last st. 

Work off lps.

Rep last row until 20 dec rows are made = 23 sts. Break yarn.

RIGHT FRONT:
USE #6 HK.
CH 43 sts.

Work in afghan st for 9 rows compl.

Dec 1 st at end of next row.

Rep dec at this same edge every 4th row, 4 times = 38 sts.

Work even until there are same # of rows as on back.

RAGLAN DECS:
Dec 1 st at end of row, 15 times = 23 sts.

NECK SHAPING:
Sl st over 8 sts; work over row, make dec at end of row. 

Work back.

* Sl st over 1st 2 sts; work over row, make dec at end of row, work back. Rep from *.

Dec 1 st at beg & end of next 2 rows. Break yarn.

LEFT FRONT:
Work to corres to right front [DECS COME AT OPP EDGES].

SLEEVES:
USE #6 HK.

CH 31 for CUFF & work 6 rows of afghan st compl.

7TH ROW: Inc 1 st in every 3rd st across row [INC BY DRAWING UP EXTRA LP IN CH ST BET BARS], 41 sts in row.

Work in afghan st, inc 1 st at each side of work every 6th row twice = 45 sts.

Now work even until sleeve meas 6 ¼” from beg.

Work 20 dec rows in same way as back raglan decs [5 STS REM]. Break yarn.

Make 2nd sleeve in same way.

FINISHING:
Sew sleeve onto front along raglan line, then onto back.

Sew other sleeve in same way.

Now sew underarm seams tog.

USE #2 HK. Attach yarn at right front neck edge, make row of SC around neck edge; down left front; across bottom & up right front, KEEP WORK FLAT.

BEADING:
CH 3, 1 DC in 1st SC, * CH 2, sk 2, 1 DC in each of next 2 sts; rep from * around neck edge. Break yarn.

USE #2 HK & Angora, make 1 row of SC around sweater.

Embroider flowers on sweater with angora as shown.

BONNET:
USE #6 HK.

Start at back piece, CH 12.

Work 2 rows in afghan st.

NEXT ROW: Inc 1 st each side of work.

Rep inc every other row 3 times more.

Work even for 7 rows.

Dec 1 st at each side of work every row, 4 times. Break yarn.

FRONT PIECE:
USE #6 HK.
CH 54.

Work 1 row of afghan st.

2ND ROW: Inc 1 st every other st across row = 80 lps on hk; work back.

Work even for 24 rows [APPROX 5”].

NEXT ROW: Draw up lp in each of 1st 35 sts, work net 2 lps tog as 1 dec; * draw up lp in each of next 2 sts; work next 2 lps tog [DEC]; rep from * once, work to end of row. Work off all lps. Break yarn.

Sew this piece to back piece, leave starting edges of 12 sts for back of neck.

NECK BAND: [RIGHT SIDE]:
USE #6 HK.
Pick up 52 sts around neck edge.

Make 4 rows of afghan st.

NEXT ROW: BINDING OFF:
Draw up lp in 1st bar as usual & draw yarn also thru lp on hk, cont across row. Break off.

FRONT TURN-BACK:
USE #6 HK.
CH 91.

Work 9 rows in afghan st.

Bind off as on neck band. Break yarn.

FINISHING:
Baste turn-back to front of bonnet.

USE #2 HK & Angora, make row of SC along front edge, insert hk thru both turn-back & bonnet. Cont with SC around edge of turn-back.

Embroider with flowers & trim with ribbon.

BOOTIES:
INSTEP & SOLE:
USE #6 HK.
CH 11; pick up 1 lp on 2nd st from hk & in each of rem sts = 11 lps.

Work in afghan st for 10 rows, CH 13. Break yarn.

Attach yarn at opp corner & CH 13, DO NOT BREAK YARN, pull up 1 lp in 2nd st from hk &  in each rem CH; pull up 1 lp in each row along side of instep; 11 lps across toe; 1 lp in each row along 2nd side on instep & on 13 CH sts.

Work back 7 forth on these 57 sts for 5 rows.

DEC ROW: Dec 1 st at beg & end of row, at center of row & 1 st at ech side of toe piece = 5 decs. 

Work off lps.

NEXT ROW: Dec 1 st at beg & end of this row. Bind off.

UPPER PART: [RIGHT SIDE]:
Attach yarn at back of bootie, pick up 13 lps on 1 side; 11 lps across instep; 13 lps on 2nd side.

Work in afghan st for 10 rows. 

Bind off on next row.

Sew back & sole part of bootie.

Make 1 row of SC around top with yarn.

Then 1 row with angora.

Make 2nd bootie in same way.
