Vintage 1954 Big Collar
Vertical Stripe Sweater #1383
This is an easy sweater for beginning knitters, working
from side to side in a simple garter st. With its bold stripes, big collar,
short cuffed sleeves & hip band, you’ll find this an attractive,
figure-flattering fit.
SIZE & MATERIAL:
Patons Titania Sports Wool [used double throughout]
Bust 32” - 12 oz color A; 9 oz color B
Bust 34” - 14 oz color A; 11 oz color B
Bust 36” – 16 oz color A; 13 oz color B

GAUGE/TENSION:
3 Sts = 1” width
3 Sts = 1” width
SWEATER:
Beg at sleeve cuff edge with A, cast on 44 sts.
Beg at sleeve cuff edge with A, cast on 44 sts.
Work in g-st [k every row] for 17 rows.
Break off A, join in B, cont in g-st for 6” without
shaping.
Cast on 48 sts at beg of next 2 rows for front & back [140
sts.]
Work even for 14 [16-18] rows.
Break off B & join in A.
DIVIDE FOR NECK:
NEXT ROW: With A, k 70, place rem sts on holder, work across 70 sts only on needle, k 15 rows with A, 16 rows with B, then 16 rows with A.
NEXT ROW: With A, k 70, place rem sts on holder, work across 70 sts only on needle, k 15 rows with A, 16 rows with B, then 16 rows with A.
Place sts onto 2nd holder & break off.
NEXT ROW: With RS facing, place 70 sts from 1st
st-holder onto left-hand needle, join in A at neck edge & K across.
Work 15 more rows with A, 16 rows with B, 16 rows with
A. Break off.
With RS facing place sts from 2nd st-holder onto
same needle with other sts, join in B at lower edge & k across all 140 sts,
13 [15-17] rows with B.
Cast off 48 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Work 2nd sleeve to corres with 1st
sleeve.
COLLAR:
With A cast on 18 sts.
With A cast on 18 sts.
Work in g-st for 24”. Cast off.
Sew ends tog to form circle, then sew to neck of sweater.
HIP BAND:
With WS facing & with A, pick up & k 48 [50-52] sts across lower edge of one side of sweater.
With WS facing & with A, pick up & k 48 [50-52] sts across lower edge of one side of sweater.
Work in g-st for 4”, cast off.
Work across other lower edge in same manner.
FINISHING:
With damp cloth & warm iron, press very lightly on WS.
With damp cloth & warm iron, press very lightly on WS.
With flat seam, sew side & sleeve seams.
Turn up cuffs & hip band, then tack into place.
Fold collar in half.
