Vintage 1953 French Sweater #1381
New style French sweater for the cocktail hour hostess. It is also smart for theatre & dinner party wear. This sweater is hip-length & may also be worn belted or middy fashion. This color scheme is becoming, but just imagine creating it in dramatic black & white.

SIZE:
32, 34 & 36

MATERIALS:
8 [8-9] oz Skeins Lincoln Mills Daphne Crochet Wool:
7 [7-8] oz Main Color [MC]; 1 [1-1] oz Contrasting Color [CC]
1 Pair Each #13 & #11 Knitting Needles
1 Steel Crochet Hook #3
1 Button Mould [Or Ornamental Button]

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust = 32” [34’-36”]
Length from top of shoulder = 19 ½” [20”-20 ½”]

GAUGE/TENSION:
8 Sts & 11 Rows = 1”

FRONT:
* Use #13 needles & MC, cast on 116 [124-132] sts.

Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 3 ½” [3 ½”-4”].

Change to #11 needles & work in st st, inc 1 st at each end of 7th & every 8th row following, until there are 1343 [142-150] sts on needle.

Work without further shaping until work meas 11 ½” [12”-12 ½”] from beg.

ARMHOLE SHAPING:
Cast off 6 [7-8] sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st at each end in next & every alt row foll until 112 [116-120] sts rem.*

P 1 row.

YOKE SHAPING:
NEXT ROW: K 42 [leave on spare needle], cast off 28 [32-36] sts, k 42.

Cont on last 42 sts, cast off at beg of every k row 6 sts 4 times & 3 sts 6 times.

Join wool to inner end of 42 sts from spare needle.

Cont in st st, cast off at beg of every p row 6 sts 4 times, 3 sts 6 times.

BACK:
Rep from * to * same as front, 112 [116-120] sts.

Work 11 rows without further shaping.

YOKE SHAPING:

Work in st st for 44 [46-48] rows. Cast off.

STRIPED SECTION:
Use CC wool & #11 needles, cast on 28 [28-28] sts.

Work in st st in stripes of 4 rows CC & 4 rows MC alt, end with stripe in MC, until there are 54 [56-58] stripes in each color. Cast off.

BUTTON COVER:
Use #3 crochet hk, make running lp & work 6 DC into it, pull lp up.

2ND RND: 2 DC into each DC of prev rnd.

3RD RND: 1 DC into each DC of prev rnd.

4TH & 5TH RNDS: Rep 2nd & 3rd rnds.

6TH RND: 1 DC into every 2nd DC of prev rnd.

7TH RND: Rep 6th rnd.

Break off wool, insert button mould & gather up.

FINISHING:
Press all parts under damp cloth.

Join shoulder seams with 1/8” back-st seam.

Join striped section with flat seam & attach to yoke & front & back sections with 1/8” back-st seam, leave front opening as shown & top of armhole free.

Sew facings in place.

Fold collar with RS tog & st ends.

Turn RS out & attach to neck.

Join side seams.

With MC, work 2 rows DC around armholes & across neck opening at front.

Turn crochet under along striped sections & sl st to form narrow hem.

Sew around buttonhole.

Sew button on to corres with buttonhole.

Press seams.
