1950s Vogue Casual Pullover Sweater #301

SIZE:
Instructions are for a 32” bust. 
Changes for 34”, 36” & 38” sizes are given in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
14 [15, 16, 17] oz. Jaegar spiral spun, blue [MC],
     & 4 [4,4,5] in white [CC]
1 Pair #8 & sets of Double-Pointed Needles #9 & #8

MEASUREMENTS: 
To fit a 32” [34”, 36”, 38”] bust. 
Length:  24 ½” [25”, 26”, 27”]

TENSION/GAUGE: 
11 sts & 16 rows = 2” over st 1

STITCHES: 
[1] Main part in in st st; 
[2] Collar & cuffs are in k 2, p 2, rib.

BACK: 
With #9 needles & MC cast on 72 [78,84,90]. 

Work in st 1. 

Work 7 rows. 

Cast on 13 at beg of next 2 rows.  98 [104, 110, 116] sts. 

K next row to mark hemline. 

Change to #8 needles

1st row:  K 6, sl 1, k to last 7 sts, sl 1, k 6.

2nd row:  P. rep last 2 rows for 5 ½”. 

Cast off 7 at beg of next 2 rows.  84 [90, 96, 102] sts. 

Work 1”. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 10th row until there are 92 [98, 104, 110] sts. 

Work until back meas 14” [14”, 14 ½”, 15”] from desired length to beg of sleeves.

Shape Sleeves: 
Inc 1 each end of next 14 rows. 

Cast on 4 at beg of following 10 rows.  160 [166, 172, 178] sts. 

Work 5” [5 ½”, 6”, 6 ½”], end with a p row.

Shape Upper Sleeves, Shoulders & Neck: 
Cast off 5 at beg of next 4 rows.

5th row:  Cast off 5, k 53 [55,57,59] incl st already on needle, cast off 24 [26, 28, 30], k to end.

6th row:  Cast off 5, p to neck.  Finish this side first. 

** 7th row:  Cast off 2, k to end.

8th row:  Cast off 5, p to neck. 

Rep last 2 rows twice more.

13th row:  K 2 tog, k to end.

14th row:  Cast off 5, p to neck. 

Rep last 2 rows 3 times more.

21st row:  K.

22nd row:  Cast off 4 [5, 6, 7], p to end.  Cast off rem 4 [5, 6, 7] sts.  Join wool to rem sts, & work from **, read k for p & p for k.

Front: 
Follow instructions for back until sleeve edges meas 4 ¾” [5 ¼”, 5 ¾”, 6 ¼”], end with p row.

Shape Upper Sleeves, Shoulders & Neck: 
1st row:  K 70 [72, 74, 76], cast off 20 [22, 24, 26], k to end.

2nd row:  P. Finish this side 1st

** 3rd row:  Cast off 2, k to end.

4th row:  Cast off 5, p to end. 

Rep last 2 rows once more.

7th row:  K 2 tog, k to end.

8th row:  Cast off 5, p to end. 

Rep last 2 rows 7 times more.

23rd row:  K.

24th row:  Cast off 4 [5, 6, 7], p to end.  Cast off rem 4 [5, 6, 7] sts.  Join wool to rem sts & work from ** read k for p & p for k.

Cuffs:  With #9 needles & CC cast on 70 [74, 78, 82]. 

Work 3” in st 2.  Cast off in rib. 

Collar: 
Sew shoulder & upper sleeve seams. 

With right side of work towards you, double-pointed needles #9 & Cc, k up sts as follows:  20 down right back of neck, 24 [26, 28, 30] across centre-back, 20 up left back, 24 down left front, 20 [22, 24, 26] across centre-front & 24 up right front.  132 [136, 140, 144] sts. 

Arrange sts on 3 needles & work in rnds.

1st rnd:  P.

2nd rnd:  P.  0 [4, 8, 0], * p twice into next st, p 2, rep from * to end.  176 [180, 184, 192] sts. 

Change to st 2

Work 3”. 

Change to #8 needles

Work 4”. 

Cast off loosely in rib. 

To Make Up: 
Sew side & sleeve seams. 

Turn in facings & hem & sl st. 

Sew on cuffs. 

Press st st parts.
