1950s Two Stylish Glimmer Corde Hats & Purse #629


Quick & easy to crochet these two delightful hats & bag of rich glimmer corde…fashionable, season-spanning, wardrobe favorites!

Materials:
Hiawatha Glimmer Corde Art 40: 
Bag 3 tubes; 
Large Hat 2 tubes; 
Small Hat 1 tube
Hiawatha Bag Frame # 6958
Hiawatha  Bag Insert # 6621
Hiawatha  Hat Lining: 
Large Hat # 6980; 
Small Hat # 6932
Flower Trim
#1 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
11 sts = 2”

BAG:  
BOTTOM:  INSIDE: 
Ch 43 to meas 8”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each of next 40 ch, 3 sc in end ch, cont around work sc in each of next 40 ch [86 sts].

2ND RND:  [2 Sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in each of next 40 sts] twice.

3RD RND:  Inc 3 sts around curve at each end [6 incs]. 

Rep 3rd rnd [do not inc directly over prev incs] until there are 128 sts, end at center of 1 short end.  Sl st & end off.

OUTSIDE: 
Same as Inside, but do not end off.

NEXT RND:  Thru back lps only of outside & both lps of inside, inserting base, sc in each st.  Sl st in next st.

SIDES: 
1ST RND:  Thru both lps * sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around [192 sts].

2ND RND:  Sc in each st. 

Rep 2nd rnd until sides are 5” high.  Sl st in next st.

NEXT RND:  * Sc in next st, draw up lp in each of next 2 sts, over & thru 3 lps [dec made].  Rep from * around [128 sts].

NEXT RND:  Sc in each st.  Sl st & end off. 

Mark off 22 sts at each end for gussets. 

CASINGS: 
Work 3 rows sc even on 42 sts of sides.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Sew casings over rods of frame.

NOTE: 
If purse lining is not available, you can create your own with lining material & heavy cardboard [or plastic].

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later. 

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag. 

Insert finished lining in bag. 

IMPORTANT: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

SMALL HAT: 
Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch, forming ring.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st.  Mark beg of rnds.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. 

Rep from * around [6 incs].  Inc 6 sts each rnd [not directly over prev incs] until there are 112 sts. 

Work even until piece is 4 ¾” from beg.  Sl st & end off.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining. 

Turn up 3 rnds for facing & sew. 

Trim as shown in photo.

LARGE HAT: 
TOP: 
Work same as Small Hat until there are 78 sts & piece is 4 ½” across. 

Work sc even for 1”.

NEXT RND:  * 2 Sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts.  Rep from * to 98 sts.  Sl st in next st. 

Insert marker to indicate center back.

BRIM: 
1ST RND:  Sc in each st.  Do not end off, but drop corde.

1ST SHORT ROW:  Join 2nd tube of corde in 24th st after marker, sc in each st to 24th st before marker.  Sl st in next st.  end off.  Pick up lp from 1st tube.

2ND RND:  Sc in each of next 23 sts, 2 sc in next st, * sc in each of next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * 4 more times, sc in each st to center back [6 incs--104 sts].  Drop corde.

2ND SHORT ROW:  Join 2nd tube in 21st st after marker, sc in each st to 21st st before marker.  Sl st in next st.  End off.  

Pick up at center back.

3RD RND:  Sc, inc 6 sts across front section [110 sts].  Drop corde.

3RD SHORT ROW:  Join in 18th st after marker, sc in each st to 18th st before marker.  Sl st & end off.

4TH RND:  Sc, inc 6 sts across front section. 

Rep 4th rnd twice more [128 sts]. 

Rep 3 short rows, working 1 rnd sc even bet each short row [128 sts]. 

Work sc even for 2”.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining. 

Turn up 1” for facing & sew. 

Tack last rnd of top to lining. 

Trim as shown in photo.
