1950s Stylish Tweed Hat & Tote Bag #628


Quick & easy to crochet this delightful hat & bag of rich tweed corde…fashionable, season-spanning, wardrobe favorites!

Materials:
Hiawatha Tweed Corde Art 32:  Bag 3 tubes;  Hat 1 tube
Hiawatha Super Corde Art 38:  Bag 1 tube;  Hat 1 tube
Hiawatha Lucite Bag Frame # 6985
Hiawatha  Bag Lining # 6985
Hiawatha  Hat Lining # 6983
2 yds Velvet Ribbon 1” wide for Hat
#1 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
11 sts = 2”

BAG: 
BOTTOM: 
With tweed ch 36 to meas 6 ½”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each of next 33 ch, 3 sc in end ch, cont around work sc in each of next 33 ch [72 sts].

2ND RND:  [2 Sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in each of next 33 sts] twice.

3RD RND:  Inc 3 sts around curve at each end [6 incs]. 

Rep 3rd rnd [do not inc directly over prev incs] until there are 138 sts. 

Work even, if necessary, to fit bottom of lining, ending at center of 1 short end.  Sl st in next st.

NEXT RND:  Thru back lps only, sc in each st.  Sl st in next st.

SIDES: 
Draw corde thru tweed lp, drop tweed to inside.

PATTERN: 
1ST RND:  With corde draw up lp in same place as sl st, draw up lp at base of next st, sk this st, draw up lp in next st, over & thru 4 lps, ch 1 [claw st made] * draw up lp in same st, draw up lp at base of next st, sk this st, draw up lp in next st, over & thru 4 lps, ch 1.  Rep from * around.  Sl st in top of 1st claw st [69 claw sts].  Draw tweed thru corde lp, drop corde to inside

2ND RND:  With tweed work 2 sc in sp before each claw st [138 sc].  Mark beg of rnds.

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  Sc in each st.  Sl st in 1st sc.  Draw corde thru tweed lp, drop tweed to wrong side

Rep from 1st rnd of patt until sides are 9” high, ending with claw st rnd.

NEXT RND:  With corde work 2 sc in each sp.

LAST RND:  Sl st in each st.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining & sew.

NOTE: 
If purse lining is not available, you can create your own with lining material & heavy cardboard [or plastic].

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later. 

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.  Insert finished lining in bag. 

IMPORTANT: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

HAT: 
TOP: 
With tweed ch 3, sl st in 1st ch, forming ring.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st.  Mark beg of rnds.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around [6 incs]. 

Inc 6 sts each rnd [not directly over incs of prev rnds] until there are 24 sts. 

Inc 12 sts in next rnd [36 sts]. 

Draw corde thru tweed lp, drop tweed to wrong side.

PATTERN: 
1ST RND:  Rep 1st rnd of patt on sides of bag [18 claw sts].  Draw tweed thru corde lp, drop corde to wrong side.

2ND RND:  With tweed work * [3 sc in sp before next claw st] twice; 2 sc in sp before next claw st.  Rep from * around [48 sc]. 

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  Sc inc 6 sts each rnd [60 sts].  Draw corde thru tweed lp, drop tweed.

5TH RND:  With corde rep 1st rnd of patt [30 claw sts].

6TH RND:  With tweed work [2 sc in sp before next claw st] 3 times; [3 sc in sp before next claw st] twice; [72 sts -- 12 sts more than on last sc rnd].

7TH & 8TH RNDS:  Sc, inc 6 sts each rnd. 

Rep 4 rnds of patt, having 12 more claw sts each claw st rnd, [work 3 sc over 12 of claw sts & 2 sc over rem claw sts -- 12 sc inc] & inc 6 sc on 3rd & 4th rnds until there are 144 sts. 

With tweed work 2 rnds sc even.

CUFF: 
1ST RND:  With corde work claw sts.

2ND RND:  With tweed work sc even.

3RD THRU  5TH RNDS:  With corde work sc even.

6TH RND:  With tweed work sc even.

7TH RND:  With corde work claw sts.

8TH RND:  With tweed work sc even.  End off tweed.

With corde work 3 rnds sc even for facing.

TABS:  INSIDE: 
With corde ch 14 to meas 2 ¼”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each of next 11 ch, 3 sc in end ch, cont around work sc in each of next 11 ch [28 sc].

2ND RND:  3 Sc in next st [corner], sc in next st, 3 sc in next st [corner], sc in each of next 12 sts, 3 sc in next st [point], sc in each of next 12 sts.  Cont around work 3 sc in each corner & in point until there are 52 sts, end in 1st corner.  Sl st & end off. 

Make another Tab in same way.

OUTSIDE: 
With tweed ch 11 to meas 2 ¼”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each of next 8 ch, 3 sc in end ch, cont around work sc in each of next 8 ch [22 sc].

2ND RND:  3 Sc in next st [corner], sc in next st, 3 sc in next st [corner], sc in each of next 9 sts, 3 sc in next st [point], sc in each of next 10 sts.  Draw corde thru tweed, drop tweed.

3RD RND:  With corde work claw st patt.  Draw tweed thru corde.  End off corde.

4TH RND:  With tweed work 4 sc in 2 claw st at each corner & at point, & 2 sc in each of rem claw sts.

Work 2 rnds sc inc at corners & points as before. 

With wrong sides of outside & inside tabs facing, using corde & beg at top corner, work sl st thru sts along sides of tabs, leaving top edges free.

FINISHING: 
Sl crocheted tabs over hat lining & sew. 

Insert lining in crocheted piece, turn up facing & sew. 

Trim with ribbon as shown in photo.
