1950s Two Elegant Hats & Handbag #630


Quick & easy to crochet these two exquisite hats & handbag…au courant, season-spanning, wardrobe favorites!

Materials:
Hiawatha Super Corde Art 38:  Bag 2 tubes each Dark [D] & Light [L];  Large Hat & Small Hat 1 tube each Dark [D] & Light [L]
Hiawatha Bag Frame # 6930
Hiawatha  Bag Insert # 6673
Hiawatha  Hat Lining:  Large Hat # 6982;  Small Hat # 6880
Feather Trim for Small Hat
#1 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
3 shells = 2”

BAG:
  BOTTOM:  INSIDE: 
With D, ch 20 to meas 3 ¼”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each of next 17 ch, 3 sc in end ch, cont around work sc in each of next 17 ch [40 sc].

2ND RND:  * 3 Sc in next st [corner], sc in next st, 3 sc in next st [corner], sc in each of next 17 sts.  Rep from * once [4 corners].

3RD RND:  * 3 Sc to center st of corner, 3 sc in center st of corner.  Rep from * ending with sc in each st to end [8 incs]. 

Rep 3rd rnd until there are 120 sts, ending in st before center of 1st corner.  Sl st & end off.

OUTSIDE: 
Same as inside, but do not end off.

NEXT RND:  Thru back lps only of outside & both lps of inside, inserting base, work * 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts.  Rep from * to next corner [8 incs across short end], sc in each st to other short end, inc 8 sts across short end, sc in each st to end of rnd.  Sl st in 1st sc.  Draw L thru D lp, drop D to inside.

SIDES: 
1ST RND:  With L, sc in same st with sl st, ch 2, 2 dc in same place, * sk next st, thru both lps sc in next st, ch 2, 2 dc in same st [shell made].  Rep from * around [68 shells].  Sl st in 1st sc.  Draw D thru L lp, drop L to inside.

2ND RND:  With D ch 3, * over, from back of work insert hk from right to left around posts of 2 dc of next shell & draw lp thru, [over & thru 2 lps] twice --dc worked around posts--dc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Sl st in top of ch-3 [68 dc].  Draw L thru D lp, drop D.

3RD RND:  With L work shell in same place as sl st, * sk dc worked around posts, work shell in next dc.  Rep from * around [68 shells].  Sl st in 1st sc. 

Rep 2nd & 3rd rnds until sides meas 6 ¼”, ending with D rnd.

NEXT RND:  With D work sc in each st.  Sl st & end off. 

Mark off 20 sts at each end for gussets.

CASINGS: 
1ST ROW:  With D along sts of 1 side work * sc in next st, draw up lp in each of next 2 sts, over & thru 3 lps [dec made].  Rep from * to marker [33 sts].  Ch 1, turn. 

Work 2 rows sc even.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Sew casings over rods of frame.

NOTE: 
If purse lining is not available, you can create your own with lining material & heavy cardboard [or plastic].

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later. 

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.  Insert finished lining in bag. 

IMPORTANT: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

LARGE HAT: 
With D ch 4, sl st in 1st ch, forming ring.

1ST RND:  Ch 3, 15 dc in ring.  Sl st in top of ch-3.  Draw L thru D lp, drop D to wrong side.

2ND RND:  With L sc in same st with sl st, ch 2, 2 dc in same place, * sk next st, sc in next st, ch 2, 2 dc in same st [shell made].  Rep from * around [8 shells].  Sl st in 1st sc.  Draw D thru L lp, drop L to wrong side.

3RD RND:  With D ch 4, dc in same place as sl st, * over, from back of work insert hk from right to left around posts of 2 dc of next shell & draw lp thru, [over & thru 2 lps] twice--dc worked around posts--work dc, ch 1 & dc in next sc [inc made].  Rep from * around [24 dc].  Sl st in 3rd st of ch-4.  Draw L thru D lp, drop D.

4TH RND:  With L work shell in same place as sl st, shell in next dc, * sk dc worked around posts, shell in each of next 2 dc.  Rep from * around [16 shells].  Sl st in 1st sc.  Draw D thru L lp, drop L.

5TH RND:  With d ch 4, dc in same place as sl st, * dc around posts of next 2 dc, dc in next sc, dc around posts of next 2 dc, work dc, ch 1 & dc in next sc [inc made].  Rep from * around [8 incs].  Sl st in 3rd st of  ch-4.  Draw L thru D lp, drop D.  Cont patt [24 L shells].

Make only 6 incs every D rnd [having 6 more shells every L rnd] until there are 60 shells. 

Work patt even, ending with 13th L rnd.  End off L.

EDGING RND: 
With D working over L sc, sc in top of D ch-3, * working behind shell, work 2 sc in next dc of D rnd below, working over next L sc, sc in next D sc.  Rep from * around. 

Work 3 rnds sc even for facing.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining. 

Sew facing in place.

SMALL HAT: 
Work same as Large Hat until there are 42 shells in rnd. 

Work patt even, ending with 8th L rnd.  End off L. 

With D work edging rnd & facing same as for Large Hat. 

Insert lining, turn up facing & sew. 

Trim as shown in photo.
