Vintage Two Chic Tweed Hats & Purse #627


Quick & easy to crochet these two delightful hats & bag of rich tweed corde…fashionable, season-spanning, wardrobe favorites!

Materials:
Hiawatha Tweed Corde Art 32: 
Bag 4 tubes;
Large Hat 2 tubes;
Small Hat 1 tube
Hiawatha Lucite Bag Frame # 6956
Hiawatha  Bag Insert [Lining] # 6621
Hiawatha  Hat Lining # 6882 [Large Hat], # 6936 [Small Hat]
Flower Trim
#1 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
11 sts = 2”

BAG:  
BOTTOM:  INSIDE: 
Ch 42 to meas 8”.

1ST RND:  5 Sc in 2nd ch fro hk, sc in each of next 39 ch, 5 sc in enc ch, cont around work sc in each of next 39 ch [88 sts.]

2ND RND:  [2 Dc in next st, sc in next st] twice; 2 sc in next st, sc in each st to 5 end sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] twice; 2 sc in next st, sc in each st to end of rnd [6 incs].

3RD RND:  Inc 3 sts around curve at each end [not directly over prev incs]. 

Rep 3rd rnd until there are 130 sts, ending 6 sts beyond center of 1 short end.  Sl st in next st, end off.

OUTSIDE: 
Same as inside, but do not end off.

NEXT RND:  Thru back lps only of outside, & both lps of inside, inserting base, sc in each st.  Sl st in next st.

BAG:  SIDES: 
1ST RND:  Thru both lps, * [sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 10 times; [sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] 5 times.  Rep from * once [160 sts].

Work sc even until sides are 7 ¾” high.  Sl st & end off.

Mark off 39 sts at each end for gussets.

NEXT RND:  Beg in 1st st of 1 gusset work * [sc in next st, draw up lp in each of next 2 sts, yo & thru 3 lps--dec made] 13 times; sc in each of next 42 sts for casing [26 sts for gusset].  Rep from * once.

NEXT RND:  Sc in each st.  Ch 1, turn.

CASINGS: 
Work 3 rows sc even on 42 sts of sides.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Sew casing over rods of frame. 

Trim as shown.

NOTE: 
If purse lining is not available, you can create your own with lining material & heavy cardboard [or plastic].

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later. 

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag. 

Insert finished lining in bag. 

IMPORTANT: 
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

LARGE HAT: 
Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch, forming ring.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st.  Mark beg of rnds.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around [6 incs]. 

Inc 6 sts each rnd [not directly over prev incs] until there are 126 sts.

Work even until piece is 12” across.  Sl st & end off.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining in crocheted piece, turn under 1 ¼” for front facing, & ½” for back facing. 

Sew in place. 

Trim as shown.

SMALL HAT: 
Work same as Large Hat until there are 120 sts. 

Work even until all tweed is used.  Sl st & end off.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining in crocheted piece, turn under 1” for front facing & ¼” for back facing & sew. 

Trim as shown.
