Vintage 1950s Square-Neck Beaded Evening Top #663

A skillful needlewoman will swiftly crochet this charming sweater with it‘s slimming, wide, scoop-necked design, accented with sequins & beads…A delightful, addition to the well-dressed woman‘s wardrobe!

SIZES: 
12, 14, 16, & 18. 
Directions are given for size 12, with changes for sizes 14, 16, & 18 in brackets.

Materials: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen Metallic, Art 64, 8 [9, 10, 12 ] balls of white
#2 Steel Crochet Hook
OR
Chadwicks Red Heart Baby Wool, 3-ply, 1 oz  - 5 [6, 7, 8] skeins of white
#2 Plastic Crochet Hook
7” Zipper, Neck Opening
3 pkgs Gold Sequins, Gold Seed Beads & Gold Bugle Beads

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1”;  
2 sc rows & 2 openwork rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:  
Bust 32” [34”, 36”, 38“]; 
Width across back at underarm 16” [17”, 18”, 19];  
Length from shoulder to lower edge 18” [18”, 18 ½”, 19“]
  
BACK: 
Start at lower edge, make ch 24” long [7 ch sts = 1”].

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across until there are on row 87 [91, 95,99] sc; row meas 12 ½” [13”, 13 ½”, 14 ½”].  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in front lp of each sc across.  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  Insert hk in back lp of 1st sc & draw lp thru, insert hk in back lp of next sc & draw lp thru, * [yo & draw thru 2 lps on hk] twice [group st made]; ch 1, insert hk where last lp was drawn thru & draw lp thru, sk next sc, insert hk in back lp of next sc & draw lp thru.  Rep from * across to last sc & complete group st to correspond with beg:  44 [46, 48, 50] group sts.  Ch 3, turn.

4TH ROW:  [Insert hk in front lp of next st & draw lp thru] twice & complete group st as before, * ch 1, insert hk where last lp was drawn thru & draw lp thru, sk next st, draw lp thru front lp of next st & complete group st as before.  Rep from * across to last st & complete group st to correspond with beg:  44 [46, 48, 50] group sts.  Ch 1, turn.

5TH ROW:  Sc in back lp of each st across:  87 [91, 95, 99] sc.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work in patt [2nd thru 5th rows make up patt], inc 1 st at both ends of each sc row until there are 115 [123, 129. 137] sc on row.

Work in patt without inc until piece meas 11 ½” [11 ½”, 11 ½”, 12 ½”], ending with 5th row of patt.

SLEEVES: 
Attach thread to beg of row & ch 11 [11, 13, 15].  Break off.  Pick up working thread & ch 12 [12, 14, 16].  Turn.

NEXT ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk & in each ch across, sc in front lp of each sc across, sc in each of last 11 [11, 13, 15] ch:  137 [145, 155, 167] sc.  Ch 3, turn. 

NEXT ROW:  Work in patt across first 45 [47, 51, 57] sts.  Ch 3, turn.

Cont in patt across these 45 [47, 51, 57] sts, inc 1 st at sleeve edge on each sc row until 12 sts have been inc:  57 [59, 63, 69] sc on row.

Work in patt without inc until piece meas 6 ½” [6 ½”, 7”, 7”] from beg of sleeve, ending at sleeve edge.  Turn.

SHAPE SHOULDER & TOP OF SLEEVE: 
1ST ROW:  Sl st across 13 [15, 15, 14] sts & work in patt across.  Turn.

2ND ROW:  Work in patt across to last 11 [11, 12, 11] sts.  Turn.

Cont in this manner, dec 11 [11, 12, 11] sts at shoulder edge until all sts have been worked off. 

Sk 47 [51, 53, 53] sts, attach thread to next st & work opposite side to correspond, reversing shaping.

FRONT: 
Work exactly as for Back.

Sew up shoulder & side seams, leave 7” opening at lower left side for zipper.

NECKBAND: 
1ST RND:  Attach thread & work sc closely around.

2ND RND:  Sc in each sc around, work off 3 sc as 1 sc at each corner. 

Rep 2nd rnd until Neckband meas 1”, sl st in next sc.  Break off.

SLEEVE BAND: 
1ST RND:  Attach thread & sc closely around.

2ND THRU 4TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.  Sl st in next sc.  Break off.

Trim neck & sleeve bands with sequins & beads.
