Vintage 1950s Men’s Nautical Sweater #666
A skillful needlewoman will swiftly knit this attractive sweater…A delightful, addition to the well-dressed man‘s wardrobe!

SIZES: 
40, 42 & 44. 
Directions are for 40 with changes for 42 & 44 in brackets.

Materials: 
Coats & Clarks ONT Speed-Cro-Sheen Mercerized Cotton, Art 44, 7 [9,10] balls of white & 5 [6, 7] balls of green
#6 [4 ¼ mm] Plastic Knitting Needles
OR
Chadwicks Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 4-ply, 1 oz, 12 [15, 17] skeins of white & 9 [10, 12] skeins of green
#5 [3 ¾ mm] Plastic Knitting Needles

GAUGE: 
5 ½ sts = 1”;  
7 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS: 
Chest 40” [42”, 44”]; 
Width across back or front at underarm 20 ½” [21 ½”, 22 ½”]; 
Length from shoulder to lower edge 23 ½” [23 ½”, 24 ½”]

BACK: 
Starting at inner edge of hem with white & #6 needles [or #5 & KW], cast on 112 [118, 124] sts. 

Work in stockinette st [k 1 row, p 1 row] for ¾”, ending with k row.

NEXT ROW:  [HEMLINE]:  K across. 

Now work in stripe patt as follows:
1ST THRU 4TH ROWS:  With white work in stockinette st.  Attach green.

5TH THRU 8TH ROWS:  With green work in stockinette st. 

9TH THRU 12TH ROWS:  With white work in stockinette st. 

Last 8 rows [5th thru 12th] make up stripe patt.

Work in stripe patt until piece meas from hemline 15” [15”, 15 ½”], end with p row.

Place marker at both ends of next row [to indicate start of armholes] & cont to work in stripe patt until piece meas from marker 8 ½” [8 ½”, 9”], end with p row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
Bind off 8 [9, 10] sts at beg of next 4 rows.

Bind off 7 [7, 8] sts at beg of following 2 rows:

NEXT ROW:  K across.

FOLLOWING ROW:  [HEMLINE]:  K across. 

With white only, work in stockinette st for 8 rows, dec 1 st at both ends of every other row.  Bind off loosely rem sts.

FRONT: 
Work exactly as for Back.

SLEEVES: 
Starting at inner edge of hem, cast on 82 [84, 88] sts. 

Work in stockinette st for ¾”, end with k row.

NEXT ROW:  [HEMLINE]:  K across. 

Now work in stripe patt as for Back until piece meas from hemline, end with same stripe as on Back at underarm 5” [5 ½”, 5 ½”].  Bind off loosely.

FINISHING: 
Sew side, shoulder & sleeve seams. 

Turn under all hems & st in place. 

Sew in sleeves.
