Vintage 1950s Scoop-Neck Blouse #662

A skillful needlewoman will swiftly crochet this charming sweater with it‘s slimming, wide, scoop-necked design, accented with front-buttoned closure…A delightful, addition to the well-dressed woman‘s wardrobe!


SIZES:  12, 14, 16, & 18.  
Directions are given for size 12, with changes for sizes 14, 16, & 18 in brackets.

Materials: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen Metallic, Art 64, 11 [11, 12, 12 ] balls of rose
#2 Steel Crochet Hook
OR Chadwicks Red Heart Fashion-Glo, 3-ply, 1 oz  - 8 [8, 9, 9] skeins of pink
#1 Plastic Crochet Hook
2 ½ yds of Ribbon, 1” wide
6 small Buttons

GAUGE:   
3½ group sts = 1”;   3 ½ rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS:  
Bust 32” [34”, 36”, 38“];  
Width across back at underarm 16” [17”, 18”, 19];  
Length from shoulder to lower edge 18 ½” [19”, 19”, 20“]

BACK:  
Starting at lower edge, make ch 30” long.

1ST ROW:  Insert hk in 3rd ch from hk & draw lp thru,  * sk 1 ch, insert hk in next lp & draw lp thru, [yo & draw thru 2 lps on hk] twice [group st made]; ch 1, insert hk where last lp was drawn thru & draw lp thru.  Rep from * across until there are on row 52 [55, 59. 62] group sts.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Hereafter, pick up back lps only.

2ND & 3RD ROWS:  Insert hk in 3rd ch from hk, draw lp thru, * sk next group st, insert hk in next ch & draw lp thru, [yo & draw thru 2 lps on hk] twice; ch 1, insert hk where last lp was drawn thru & draw lp thru.  Rep from * across, ending with last lp of last group st in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

4TH & 5TH ROWS:  Sk 1st group st, [insert hk in next ch & draw lp thru] twice; ch 1 & complete row in patt as before [1 group st dec at beg of each row].  Ch 3, turn.

Work 4 more rows in patt without dec. 

Rep 4th & 5th rows once more.  There are on row 48 [51, 55, 58] group sts.

Work without dec until piece meas 6 ½” [7”, 7”, 7 ½”]. 

Now inc 1 group st at both ends of next row & every 4th row thereafter until there are on row 56 [59, 63, 66] group sts - to inc 1 group st, draw up lp in same ch as 1st group st & in back lp of same group st, [yo & draw thru 2 lps] twice; then draw up lp in same group st & in next ch, [yo & draw thru 2 lps] twice

Work without inc until piece meas in all 11 ½” [12”, 12”, 12 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLES:  
1ST ROW:  [Sl st in next group st & next ch] twice; ch 3 & work in patt across to within last 2 group sts.  Ch 3, turn, 52 [55, 59, 62] group sts on row.

2ND ROW:  Work in patt across.

3RD & 4TH ROW:  Dec 1 group st at beg of each row & work in patt across.  Ch 3, turn, 50 [53, 57, 60] group sts on row. 

Now work without dec until piece meas 3” from 1st row of armhole shaping. 

Now inc 1 group st at both ends of next row. 

Cont to work in patt without inc for 5 more rows.  There are 52 [55,59,62] group sts on row.

SHAPE NECK:  
1ST ROW:  Inc 1 group st & work in patt across next 25 [27, 29, 30] group sts, ch 1, sc in next group st & in next ch.  Ch 1, turn.  

Now work over this set of sts only as follows;

2ND, 4TH, 6TH & 8TH ROWS:  Sk 1st sc, sl st in next sc, [sc in next ch & in next group st] 4 times; ch 1, work in patt across.  Ch 3, turn.

3RD & 5TH ROWS:  Inc 1 group st & work across to within last group st, ch 1, sc in next group st & in next ch.  Ch 1, turn.

7TH & 9TH ROWS:  Work as for 3rd row without inc, shaping neck edge as before.

10TH ROW:  Sk 1st sc, sl st in next sc, [sc in next ch & next group st] once [2, 4, 4] times.

FOR SIZES 16 & 18 ONLY:  
Work 2 rows more without dec.  Break off.

Attach thread to opposite side of neck edge & work other side to correspond, reversing shapings.

LEFT FRONT:  
Starting at lower edge, make ch 20” long.

1ST ROW:  Work in group st patt across until there are on row 30 [32, 34, 36] group st.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 3, turn.

2ND & 3RD ROWS:  Work in patt across.  

At end of 3rd row work is at side edge.

4TH ROW:  Dec 1 group st at beg of row & work in patt across. 

Now cont to work in patt, shaping at side edge same as for Back, until piece meas 3” from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending at side edge.  There are on row 29 [31, 33, 35] group sts.

SHAPE NECK:  
1ST ROW:  Inc 1 group st at beg of row & work in patt across to within last group st, ch 1, sc in next group st & in next ch.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Work as for 2nd row of Back.

3RD ROW:  Work as for 1st row, but do not inc.

4TH ROW:  Sk 1st sc, sl st in next sc, [sc in next ch & next group st] twice; ch 1 & work in patt across.  Ch 3, turn.

Work 3rd & 4th rows alternately until Front meas same as Back, shaping side edge as for Back.  Break off.

RIGHT FRONT:  
Work as for Left Front, reversing shapings.

Sew side & shoulder seams.

NECK & FRONT BANDS:  
1ST ROW:  With wrong side facing, starting at lower left side, sc closely across both front edges & neck edge, making 3 sc in same sp at each corner of front edges.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  Sc in each sc across, making 3 sc in center sc at corners.  Ch 1, turn. 

With pins mark position of 6 buttons on Left Front Band, having 1st pin mark ½” up from lower edge & last pin mark ½” down from neck edge.’

4TH ROW:  Sc in each sc across, making buttonhole on Right Front Band opposite each pin mark & working 2 sc off as 1 sc at shoulder seams [to make buttonhole, ch 2, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc.]

5TH ROW:  Sc in each sc & in each ch across, working 2 sc off as 1 sc at shoulder seams.

6TH ROW:  Sc in each sc around entire garment, incl lower edges.  Break off.

Make 1 row of sc around armholes.  Ch 1, turn. 

Sl st in each sc around.  Break off.

FINISHING:  
Sew ribbon to outside of Front & Neck Bands, cutting buttonholes in ribbon to match buttonholes in garment. 

Work buttonhole st around buttonholes. 

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. 

Cut two 9” pieces of ribbon. 

Fold each piece in half to from band & sew in place for pockets.
