Vintage 1950s Ripple Beaded Purse #632


Quick & easy to crochet this exquisite beaded handbag…au courant, season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

Materials:
Hiawatha Super Corde Art 38:  3 tubes
Hiawatha Paisley Metallic Corde Art 69:  2 tubes
Hiawatha Plastic Bag Base # 6961
Hiawatha  Drawstrings # 6627 [1 pair]
Hiawatha  Small Round Wooden Beads, 5 strings
#1 Steel Crochet Hook

BAG: 
Sl 2 strings of beads onto paisley.

1ST RND:  With corde work 4 sc in each hole of base [104 sts].  Sl st in next st.  Mark beg of rnds. 

2ND RND:  * Sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * to 144 sts.

3RD RND:  Sc in next st, * sk 1 st, sc in each of next 3 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts.  Rep from * ending with sc in each of last 3 sts [16 patts].

4TH RND:  Sc in 1st sc, * sk 1 sc, hdc in each of next 3 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 3 sts, sk 1 st, sc in next sc.  Rep from * ending with sl st in 1st sc.

F Draw paisley thru corde lp, drop corde to wrong side, turn.

5TH RND:  With paisley from wrong side, without beads, sc in same place as sl st, * sk next st, working thru front lps only, hdc in each of next 3 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 3 sts, sk next st, sc in next st.  Rep from * around, sk last st.

6TH RND:  With paisley thru both lps, sc in 1st sc, * slide bead close to last st made, sk 1 st, sc in next st [beaded sc made] sc in next st, beaded sc in next st, in next st work plain sc, beaded sc & plain sc; work beaded sc in next st, plain sc in next st, beaded sc in next st, sk 1 st, plain sc in next st.  Rep from * ending with sl st in 1st sc.

7TH RND:  Rep 5th rnd.  Sl st in 1st sc.  Draw corde thru paisley lp, end off paisley, turn.

8TH RND:  With corde from right side, thru back lps only, sc in same place as sl st, * sk 1 st, hdc in each of next 3 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 3 sts, sk 1 st, sc in next st.  Rep from * ending with sl st in 1st sc, turn.

9TH RND:  With corde from wrong side, thru both lps work same as 8th rnd.

10TH THRU 12TH RNDS:  Rep rnds 8, 9 & 8.  

Rep from F twice more; then rep 5th thru 10th rnds once more.

BEADING: 
Ch 8, * sc in center st of point, ch 4, trc in lowest st bet points, ch 4.  Rep from * around.  Sl st in 4th ch of ch-8.  Turn.

RUFFLE: 
1ST RND:  From wrong side of bag [right side of ruffle]. Work 3 sc over each ch-4 & 3 sc in sc at top of each point, sk trcs [144 sc].  Sl st in next st, turn.

With corde rep 8th & 9th rnds twice [5 rnds of corde above casing].  Sl st in next st, turn.

With Paisley rep 5th, 6th & 7th rnds.  End off paisley.  Turn.

LAST RND:  With corde from right side of ruffle work sc in each st.  Sl st & end off.

FINISHING: 
Start at opposite sides, from inside of bag, thread drawstrings thru beading. 

Knot ends of each drawstring tog.
