1950s Elegant Beaded Purse #631


Quick & easy to crochet this exquisite beaded handbag…au courant, season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

Materials:
Hiawatha Super Corde Art 38:  3 tubes
Hiawatha Plastic Bag Base # 6616
Hiawatha  Drawstrings # 6627 [1 pair]
Hiawatha  Large Round Wooden Beads, 3 strings [150 beads]
Hiawatha  Small Round Wooden Beads, 6 strings [600 beads]
#1 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
6 sts = 1”

BAG: 
Sl 2 strings of small beads on 1 strand of corde & 1 string of large beads on another strand.

1ST RND:  Using corde with small beads, start at center of short end of base, work 4 sc in each hole [128 sts].  Sl st in 1st sc. 

2ND RND:  * Sc in each of next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around [144 sc].  Sl st in 1st sc.  Turn.

F 3RD RND:  From wrong side, sc in next st, sl bead close to work, sc in next st [beaded sc made] * plain sc in next st, beaded sc in next st.  Rep from * around [72 beads].  Mark beg of rnds.

4TH & 5TH RNDS:  Plain sc in each st, ending at marker.

6TH RND:  Draw strand with large beads thru lp on hk, drop strand with small beads to inside, with large beads work plain sc in each of next 2 sts, * beaded sc in next st, plain sc in each of next 3 sts.  Rep from * ending with plain sc in last st [36 large beads].

7TH & 8TH RNDS:  Plain sc in each st, ending at marker.

9TH RND:  Draw strand with small beads thru lp on hk, drop strand with large beads & work same as 3rd rnd [be sure small beads are directly over small beads of 3rd rnd].

10TH THRU 14TH RNDS:  Work plain sc in each st. 

Rep from F 3 more times.  Sl st in next st.

NEXT RND:  * Ch 5, turn, sk 2 sc, sl st in next st, turn, work 8 sc over ch-5, sc in each of next 4 sts, ch 5, turn, sk 2 sc, sl st in next st, turn, work 8 sc over ch-5, sc in each of next 8 sts.  Rep from * around [24 lps].  Sl st in next st.  End off.

FINISHING: 
Folding adjacent lps tog & beg at ends of oval, insert drawstrings, forming 12 pleats as shown.
