1950s Knitted Box Jacket #102

Thick wool for a box coat, smart for town or country with its brass buttons & small stand-up collar.

INSTRUCTIONS are for a 32 inch bust. 
Changes for 34, 36, 38, 40 & 42 are given in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
17 [18, 19, 19, 20, 20] hanks of Marshgrove Huski Knit for three-quarter sleeved jacket OR
18 [19, 20, 20, 21, 21] for long sleeves.
1 Pair Needles #8
3 ½ yds 3” Grosgrain Ribbon
½ yd of 1 ¼” Grosgrain Ribbon
6 Buttons

MEASUREMENTS: 
To fit a 32 [ 34, 36, 38, 40, 42] inch bust. 
Length 22 [22 ¾, 23, 23 ¾, 24, 24] inches. 
Three-quarter sleeve seam 15”,
Long sleeves 18”.

TENSION: 
6 sts & 8 rows = 1”.

STITCH: 
Entire jacket is worked as follows:
1st row [right side] - [K 1, p 1] to last st, k 1.

2nd row - P.

3rd row - [P 1, k 1] to last st, p 1.

4th row - P.
Rep these 4 rows.

BACK: 
Cast on 107 [113, 119, 125, 131, 137]. 

Work 13 ½ [14, 14, 14 ½, 14 ½, 14 ½] ins or desired length to armholes, end with 4th patt row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Cast off 5 [6, 7, 8. 9. 10] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 each end of every alternate row until 83 [85, 87, 89, 91, 93] sts rem. 

Work until armholes are 8 ½ [8 ¾, 9, 9 ¼, 9 ½, 9 ½] ins meas on the straight.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
Cast off at beg of next & following rows 7 sts 6 times & 7 [7, 8, 8, 9, 9] sts twice. 

Cast off rem 27 [29, 29, 31, 31, 33] sts for neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
Work pocket lining.  Cast on 37. 

Work 5”, end with 4th patt row.  Leave sts on holder. 

Now cast on 71 [75, 79, 81, 85, 87] sts.  Work 5 ins, end with 4th patt row.

WORK POCKET OPENING: 
Next row - Work 6, sl next 37 sts on to holder for pocket flap, work 37 pocket lining sts, work to end. 

Cont until front meas same as back to armholes, end with 4th patt row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Cast off 6 [7, 8, 9, 10, 11} at beg of next row. 

Dec 1 at same edge every alternate row until 59 [61, 62, 63, 64, 65] sts rem. 

Work until armhole is 7 ½ [7 ¾, 8, 8 ¼, 8 ½, 8 ½] ins, meas on straight, end at center-front edge.

SHAPE NECK: 
Cast off at this edge 19 [21, 21, 22, 22, 23] sts once & 3 sts 4 times.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
Cast off at armhole edge 7 sts 3 times & 7 [7, 8, 8, 9, 9] once.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Follow instructions for left front, read 3rd patt row for 4th patt row & reverse shapings. 

Work first buttonhole in same row as pocket opening as follows:  work 8, cast off 4,

Work 16 [20, 24, 26, 30, 32], sl next 37 sts on to holder, work 37 pocket lining sts, work 6. 

In next row cast on 4 above cast-off sts. 

Work 2 ½ [ 2 ½, 2 ½, 2 ¾, 2 ¾, 2 ¾] ins. 

Work 2nd buttonhole. 

* Work 3 ¾ [4, 4, 4, 4, 4] ins. 

Work two more buttonholes 2 ½ [2 ½, 2 ½, 2 ¾, 2 ¾, 2 ¾] ins apart.  Rep from * once more.

SLEEVES: 
Cast on 75 [77, 79, 81, 83, 85]. 

Work 4”, end with p row. 

P next row to reverse patt. 

Work 2”. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 8th row until there are 91 [95, 99, 103, 107, 109] sts. 

Work until sleeve meas 15” from turning line for three-quarter sleeve or 18” for full-length sleeve.

SHAPE TOP: 
Cast off 6 [7, 8, 9, 10, 11] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 each end of next 5 rows, then every alternate row until 43 sts rem. 

Dec 1 each end of every row until 33 rem. 

Cast off 3 at beg of next 6 rows.  Cast off.

COLLAR: 
Cast on 81 [83, 85, 87, 89, 91]. 

Work 12 rows.  Cast off.

POCKET FLAPS: 
With right side of work towards you sl 37 sts from holder to needle. 

P first row to reverse patt. 

Work 14 more rows.  Cast off.

TO MAKE UP: 
Sew shoulder seams. 

Set in sleeves. 

Sew side & sleeve seams. 

Sew down pocket linings. 

Face cuffs, lower edge & center-front edges with 3 inch ribbon. 

Cut buttonholes in facing & buttonhole st ribbon & knitting tog. 

Sew cast-on edge of collar to neck to within 10 sts of center-front edges. 

Face collar with 1 ½” ribbon. 

Turn cuffs back. 

Press.
