1950s Knitted Yoked Jacket #101


A coat on generous lines with thick rib edging. the yoke and square-set sleeves underlined with lapped seam detail.

INSTRUCTIONS: are for a 32-34 inch bust. 
Changes for 35-37 & 38-40 are given in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
39 [40,41] oz of Bairnswear Femina Double Knitting Wool
1 Pair Needles #10
½ yd 36” Lining Fabric for Yoke
6 Buttons

MEASUREMENTS: 
To fit a 32-34 [35-37, 38-40] inch bust. 
Length at center back 24 [25, 26] inches. 
Sleeve seam 19 [19 ½, 20] inches.

TENSION: 
6 sts & 8 rows = 1” over st 1.

STITCHES: 
[1] Main part is in st st. 
[2]  Edgings & cuffs are in k1, p1 rib.

BACK: 
With #0 needles, cast on 118 [124, 130]. 

Work in st 1.  Work 4”. 

Cast on 12 at beg of next 2 rows. 

Work 5 [5 ¼, 5 ½] ins. 

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Cast off 26 [27, 28] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Work 6 ¼ [6 ½, 6 ¾] ins from cast-off sts.  Cast off.

LEFT FRONT: 
Work pocket lining.  Cast on 44. 

Work 5” in st 1, end with a k row.  Leave sts on holder. 

Now cast on 59 [62, 65]. 

Work in st 1.  Work 4”, end with a p row. 

Next row - Cast on 12, k to end. 

Work 7 rows, end with a p row. 

WORK POCKET OPENINGS: 
1st row - K 12, cast off 44, k to end.

2nd row - P to cast-off sts, p 44 sts of pocket lining, p to end. 

Work until front meas same as back to armholes, end with a p row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Next row - Cast off 26 [27, 28] k to end. 

Work 6 ¼ [6 ½, 6 ¾] ins from cast-off sts.  Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Follow instructions for left front, read k for p, and p for k.

BACK YOKE: 
Cast on 90 [94, 98].  Work in st 1. 

Work 16 rows. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 8th row until there are 100 [104, 108] sts. 

Work 1 [3, 5] rows, end with p row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS:  
Cast off at beg of next & following row 4 [5, 6] sts twice & 6 sts 10 times. 

Cast off rem 32 [34, 36] sts for neck.

LEFT FRONT YOKE: 

Cast on 45 [47, 49].  Work in st 1. 

Work 16 rows. 

Inc 1 st beg of next & every 8th row 5 times. 

Work 0 [2, 4] rows after last inc, end with k row.

SHAPE NECK: 

Cast of 2 [3, 4] at beg of next row. 

Dec 1 st at same edge every row 4 times.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 

Cast off at armhole edge 4 [5, 6] sts once & 6 sts 5 times, at same time dec at neck edge every row 10 times.

RIGHT FRONT YOKE: 
Follow instructions for left front yoke, reverse shapings.

SLEEVES: 
Cast on 38 [40, 42]. 

Work 5 ins in st 2.

Next row:  P twice into each st 76 [80, 84]  sts.  Change to st 1. 

Work 6 rows. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 7th [6th, 6th] row until there are 96 [102, 108] sts. 

Work until sleeve meas 19 [ 19 ½,  20] ins. 

Cast on 26 at beg of next 2 rows, 148 [154, 160] sts. 

Work 5 ½” from cast off sts. 

Cast off 20 at beg of next 6 rows.  Cast off.

COLLAR: 
Cast on 16 [20, 24].  Work in st 1. 

Cast on 10 at end of next 6 rows.  76 [80, 84] sts. 

Work until collar meas 8” from last set of cast on sts. 

Cast off 10 at beg of every row 6 times.  Cast off.

POCKET EDGING: 
Cast on 48. 

Work 4” in st 2. 

Cast off loosely in rib.

FRONT EDGING: 
Cast on 216 [226, 236]. 

Work 4” in st 2. 

Cast off loosely in rib. 

Make another piece in same way.

BACK EDGING: 
Cast on 172 [182, 192]. 

Work 4” in st 2.  Cast off loosely in rib.

TO MAKE UP: 
Press yokes & cut out yoke lining, use them as patt & allow ½ in turnings. 

Sew yokes to front & back with a lapped seam. 

Sew shoulder seams. 

Set in sleeves with lapped seams. 

Sew side & sleeve seams.  

Fold collar & sew to neck edge. 

Double edgings & sew round back & fronts, up slash at each side & along ends of collar, ease carefully round corners & stretching slightly along straight edges. 

Mark positions for six buttons on left front & leave spaces along right front to correspond. 

Seam shoulders of lining, turn in seam allowance round edge & sl st inside yoke. 

Sew down pocket linings & edge pockets in same way as coat. 

Press well. 

Sew on buttons.
