1950s Dog Sweater Coat

PATTERN:
1st row:
K
across row.
2nd row:
* K
1, p 1 rep from * across row.
Rep
these 2 rows for patt.
Cast
on 48 [44, 52] sts with #6 needles & work in patt for 2 rows.
Inc
1 st at beg of every row until there are 68 [64, 72] sts on needle [being
careful to carry out patt with inc sts].
Work
even in patt until piece measures 13” [11”, 15”], or any desired length to
neck.
Right
side facing you work across 29 [27, 31] sts & sl them to holder, bind off
next 10 sts for neck & work across rem 29 [27, 31] sts.
Work
over these sts only & dec 1 st at neck edge every row until 13 [11, 15] sts
are left on needle.
Work
even until piece measures 3 ½” [2 ½”, 4 ½”] or any desired length above
neck. Bind off.
Slip
sets from holder back to needle, attach the yarn & finish this side of neck
to correspond.
FINISHING:
With
#6 crochet hook work 2 rows sc around the entire sweater.
In
next row work 2 buttonholes across the 13 [11, 15] neck sts as follows: 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2, 1
sc in each of next 5 [3, 7] sts, ch 2, sk 2, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts.
On
next row work 2 sc in ch 2 sp of previous row.
Work
1 more row sc across neck. Fasten off.
TAB:
Cast
on 8 sts [all sizes] with #6 needles & work even for 4“ [3“, 5“]. bind off.
With
#6 crochet hook work 1 row sc around tab, making 2 buttonholes at short edge as
follows: 1 sc, ch 2, sk 2, 1 sc in each
of the next 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2, 1 sc.
Work
1 more row sc across this edge & fasten off.
Sew
tab to center of sweater.
Sew
buttons in place & block to size.
Cut
plastic to fit blanket & sew to wrong side as lining.
