Vintage Mod 1960s Boston Beauty Dress #1179
SIZE:
Directions are for Size 8.
Changes for Sizes 10, 12, 14 & 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva Reflection, 1 oz Skein:
Color A – 11 (12-13-14-15); Color B – 6 (7-7-8-8)
1 Pair Each Boye Knitting Needles #4, #5 & #6
1 Boye Crochet Book Size E

MEASUREMENTS:
Length back of neck to hem = 35¼” (35½”-35¾”-36”)
Width across back = 17” (17¾”-18½”-19¼”-20¼”)
Width across shoulders = 13” (13½”-14”-14½”-15”)
Width across sleeve = 11¼” (11¼”-12”-12”-13”)

GAUGE:
Pattern on #6:
13 sts = 2”;  13 rows = 2”
Pattern on #5:
7 sts = 1”;  7 rows = 1”
Pattern on #4:
15 sts = 2”;  15 rows = 2”

PATTERN STITCH:
Multiple of 6 sts plus 1

1ST ROW - RIGHT SIDE: With Color A - K 3, join B, * K 1 B, 5 A, rep from * across, end 1 B, 3 A.

2ND ROW: P 2 A, * 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 3 A, rep from * across, end 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 2 A.

3RD ROW: K 1 A, * 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, 1 A, rep from * across.

4TH ROW: P 1 B,* 5 A, 1 B, rep from * across.

5TH ROW: Rep 3rd Row.

6TH ROW: Rep 2nd Row. Rep these 6 rows for patt.

NOTE:
When changing color, always pick up next color from under dropped color to prevent hole.

Carry unused yarn on wrong side.

Directions are for 35¼” (35½”-35¾”-36”) dress meas from back of neck to hem.

To lengthen or shorten make adjustment before 1st change of needles.

BACK:
With #6 needles & Color A - cast on 127 (133-139-145-151) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in patt for 13½” – 1” hem included.

NEXT ROWS: Change to #5 needles & cont in patt to 19”.

NEXT ROWS: Change to #4 needles & cont in patt to 29” or 1” more than desired length to underarm, end on wrong side.

Width across back is 17” (17¾”-18½”-19¼”-20¼”).

ARMHOLES:
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

SIZES 12 (14-16) ONLY bind off 1 (1-2) at beg of next 2 rows.

ALL SIZES dec 1 each side every row 5 times, then every other row 5 (6-6-7-7) times.

Work on the 97 (101-105-109-113) sts to 4¼” (4½”-4¾”-5”-5¼”) straight above underarm, end on right side.

Width across shoulders is 13” (13½”-14”-14½”-15”).

OPENING:
Work 48 (50-52-54-56) sts & sl them to holder, bind off center st, work to end.

NEXT ROWS: Work on 48 (50-52-54-56) sts to 6¼” (6½”-6¾”-7”-7¼”) above underarm, end on wrong side.

SHOULDER:
Bind off 8 sts at armhole edge 1 (2-3-4-3) times.

ON SIZES 8 (10-12-16) ONLY bind off 7 (7-7-9) sts at same edge 3 (2-1-1) times.

NEXT ROWS: Bind off rem 19 (20-21-22-23) sts for neck.

Work other side to corres.

FRONT:
Omit opening, work same as back to 5” (5¼”-5½”-5¾”-6”) straight above underarm, end on right side.

NECK:
Work 34 (35-36-37-38) sts & sl them to a holder, bind off center 29 (31-33-35-37) sts for neck, work to end.

NEXT ROWS: Dec 1 at neck every other row 5 times.

AT THE SAME TIME when armhole matches back armhole bind off 8 at armhole edge 1 (2-3-4-3) times.

ON SIZES 8 (10-12-16) ONLY bind off 7 (7-7-9) at same edge 3 (2-1-1) times.

Start at neck work other side to corres.

SLEEVES:
With #4 needles & A - cast on 85 (85-91-91-97) sts.

NEXT ROWS: Work in patt for 15”, end on wrong side.

Width across sleeve is 11¼” (11¼”-12”-12”-13”).

SLEEVE CAP:
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

SIZES 12(14-16) ONLY bind off 1 (1-2) at beg of next 2 rows.

ALL SIZES dec 1 each side every row 6 (5-6-5-5) times, then every other row until 47 sts rem.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows. Bind off rem 35 sts.

COLLAR:
With #5 needles & A - cast on 31.

NEXT ROW: P.

WORK IN PATT:
1ST ROW: With A - K in front & back of 1st st for inc, K 1, join B, * K 1 B, 5 A, rep from * to last 5 sts, K 1 B, with A - K 2, K 2 tog.

2ND ROW: P 2 A, * P 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 3 A, rep from * to last 5 sts, P 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 2 A.

3RD ROW: With A - inc 1, * K 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, 1 A, rep from * to last 6 sts, K 1 B, 3 A, with B - K 2 tog.

4TH ROW: * P 5 A, 1 B, rep from * to last st, P 1 A.

5TH ROW: With B - inc 1, * K 1 A, 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, rep from * to last 6 sts, K 1 A, 1 B, with A - K 2, K 2 tog.

6TH ROW: * P 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 3 A, rep from * across, end P 1 B.

7TH ROW: With B - inc 1, K 4 A, * K 1 B, 5 A, rep from * to last 2 sts, with B - K 2 tog.

8TH ROW: * P 1 A, 1 B, 3 A, 1 B, rep from * across, end P 1 A.

9TH ROW: With A - inc 1, K 1, * K 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, 3 A, rep from * to last 5 sts, K 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, with A - K 2 tog.

12TH ROW: * P 3 A, 1 B, 1 A, 1 B, rep from * across, end P 1 A.

Rep these 12 rows for 13” meas along 1 side, end on wrong side.

Careful to keep patt, work as follows:
1ST ROW: With A - bind off 8, work to end.

2ND ROW: Work to last 2, with A - P 2 tog.

NEXT ROWS: Rep last 2 rows until 4 sts rem. Bind off.

BIAS TRIM FOR CUFFS: (MAKE 2):
With #5 needles & A - cast on P 1 row.

NEXT ROWS: Work 12 rows of patt as given for collar until 1 side meas 8”. Bind off.

FINISHING:
Sew shoulder seams.

Sew shorter edge of collar to neck.

With A - crochet 1 row of SC around back edge of opening & collar, make buttonloop at neck.

Sew sleeves in place.

Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Turn up 1” hem & sew in place.

Sew cast-on edge of cuff to bound-off edge.

Start at sleeve seam with right sides tog, sew cuff to sleeve, holding sleeve in to fit cuff.

Fold cuff in half & sew other edge to seam.
