Vintage 1945 Two Classic Knit Jackets #176

Tailored Cardigan & Sport Yarn Topper

Two amazing knit jackets to expand your wardrobe…one knit in a simple, one button & collarless style…the other in a great pattern, worn open.  These will become staples for you to wear year round.

TAILORED CARDIGAN:

SIZE:  14

MATERIALS: 
1 pair each #2 and #3 Standard needles - 14 in
#2 Steel crochet hook
Jack Frost Sport Yarn:  Main Color [MC]  4 - 2 oz balls; Contrasting Color [CC]  1 - 2 oz ball

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1 in

BACK: 
With #3 needles cast on 121 sts. 

Work in patt as follows:
1st row [wrong side]:  * K 1, p 1; rep from * across row.

2nd row:  Knit.

3rd row:  Purl.

4th row:  Knit.

5th row:  * P 1, k 1;  repeat from * across row.

6th row:  Knit.

7th row:  Purl.

8th row:  Knit.

The above 8 rows form the pattern. 

Repeat them until piece measures 6 ins from lower edge. 

Change to #2 needles and continue patt until piece measures 10 ½ ins from lower edge. 

Change to #3 needles and continue patt until piece measures 16 ½ ins from lower edge. 

Continuing patt, bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows for underarm;  dec 1 st at each end every other row 7 times. 

Work even until piece measures 7 ins from underarm. 

Bind off 7 sts at beg of each of next 8 rows for shoulders. 

Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.

POCKET LINING: 
With #3 needles cast on 31 sts. 

Work in patt for 4 ½ ins. 

Place on holder.

RIGHT FRONT: 
With #3 needles cast on 65 sts. 

Work in patt inc 1 st at front edge on the 2nd row and every other row thereafter to 69 sts. 

Work even until piece measures 6 ins from lower edge, then bind off for pocket opening as follows [right side]:  work over the first 25 sts, bind off next 31 sts, work across row. 

Work back over the first 13 sts, place pocket lining on left hand needle, work across row. 

Change to #2 needles and work even until piece measures 7 ins from lower edge, then work a buttonhole as follows [right side] : work over first 3 sts, bind off next 3 sts for buttonhole, work across row. 

Work back casting on 3 sts over the bound off sts. 

Work even until piece measures 10 ins from lower edge, then keeping underarm edge even, start decreasing 1 st at front edge on the next row and every 5th row thereafter to 28 sts. 

When piece measures 12 ins from lower edge, change to #3 needles and continue patt until piece measures 16 ½ ins from lower edge. 

Bind off 8 sts at underarm edge once, then dec 1 st at underarm edge every other row 7 times. 

Work in patt keeping armhole edge even, until piece measures 7 ins from underarm. 

Starting at shoulder edge, bind off 7 sts every other row 4 times.

Work left side to correspond, omitting buttonholes. 
Sew shoulder and underarm seams.

SLEEVES: 
With #3 needles cast on 49 sts. 

Work in patt inc 1 st at each end of the 9th and every 8th row thereafter to 87 sts. 

Work even until piece measures 18 ins from lower edge. 

Bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows for underarm; dec 1 st at each end every other row 7 times, then every 4th row 3 times. 

Bind off 2 sts at beg of every row until 17 sts remain.

Sew sleeve seams. 

Sew sleeves in place.

FINISHING: 
With #2 steel crochet hook and CC, work 2 rows of sc around entire opening, across pocket opening and lower edges of sleeves. 

Fasten off.

SPORT YARN TOPPER

SIZE:  14 - 16

MATERIALS: 
Jack Frost Sport Yarn, 7 - 2 oz balls
1 Pair each #3 and #5 standard needles - 14 ins

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1 in.

BACK: 
With #5 needles cast on 120 sts. 

Work in patt as follows:

1st row [wrong side]:  * P 1, yarn forward [ yf ], sl 1 st as if to p, yarn back [ yb ], k 5; rep from * across row ending p 1.

2nd row:  * K 1, p 4, sk 1, k next st [do not drop from needle], p the sk st, drop both sts from needle [ twisted st ]; rep from * across row ending k 1.

3rd row:  * P 1, k 1, yf, sl next sty, by, k 4; rep from * across row ending k 1.

4th row:  * K 1, p 3, twist next 2 sts, p 1; rep from * across row ending k 1.

5th row:  * P 1, k 2, yf, sl next st, yb, k 3; rep from * across row ending p 1.

6th row:  * KI 1, p 2, twist next 2 sts, p 2; rep from * across row ending k 1.

7th row:  * P 1, k 3, yf, slip next st, by, k 2; rep from * across row ending p 1.

8th row:  * K 1, p 1, twist next 2 sts, p 3; rep from * across row ending k 1.

9th row:  * P 1, k 4, yf, slip next st, by, k 1; rep from * across row ending p 1.

10th row:  * K 1, twist next 2 sts, p 4; rep from * across row ending k 1.

11th row:  * P 1, k 5, yf, slip next st; rep from * across row ending p 1.

12th row:  K 2 tog, * p 5, twist next 2 sts, working 2nd st as if to k instead of p; rep from * across row ending p 4, inc 1 st in next st, k 1. 

The above 12 rows form pattern. 

Repeat them until piece measures 18 ins from lower edge. 

Bind off 7 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows for underarm; dec 1 st at each end every other row 7 times. 

Work even until piece measures 7 ins from underarm. 

Bind off 7 sts at beg of each of next 8 rows for shoulders. 

Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.

RIGHT FRONT: 
With #5 needles cast on 71 sts. 

Work in patt until piece measures 18 ins from lower edge. 

Keeping front edge even, bind off 14 sts at underarm edge once; dec 1 st at underarm edge every other row 7 times. 

Work even until piece measures 5 ½ ins from underarm. 

Keeping armhole edge even, bind off 12 sts at neck edge once, then 2 sts at neck edge every other row 5 times. 

Work even until piece measures 7 ins from underarm. 

Starting at shoulder edge, bind off 7 sts every other row 4 times. 

Work other side to correspond. 

Sew shoulder and underarm seams.

SLEEVES: 
With #3 needles cast on 78 sts. 

Work in patt until piece measures 6 ins from lower edge. 

Change to #5 needles and continue patt until piece measures 18 ins form lower edge. 

Bind off 7 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows for underarm; dec 1 st at each end every other row 7 times, then every 4th row 3 times. 

Bind off 2 sts at beg of every row until 20 sts remain.  Bind off.

Sew sleeve seams. 

Sew sleeves in place.

POCKETS: 
With #5 needles cast on 36 sts. 

Work in patt until piece measures 5 ½ ins.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Work 2 rows of sc around lower edge and entire opening of Topper, 2 rows of sc around lower edge of sleeves, and 2 rows of sc around pockets, working 2 sc in corner sts.
