1950s Vogue Double-Breasted Suit Jacket #169


Elegance in a smart double-breasted jacket that’s very simple to knit  & a pleasure to wear in town or country.

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 32” bust. 
Changes for 34“, 36“, 38” & 40” are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
26 [27, 28, 29, 30] oz of WB Kwiknit,
1 Pair each of #8 & #6 Knitting Needles
Medium Crochet Hook
8 Buttons

MEASUREMENTS: 
To fit a 32” [34“, 36“, 38“, 40“] bust.
Length:  22 ½” [22 ¾”, 23 ½”, 23 ¾”, 24 ½”].
Sleeve seam:  17 ½” [17 ½”, 18“, 18“, 18“].

GAUGE: 
11 sts & 14 rows to 2” over st 2.

PATTERN: 
[1]  Edgings are in k 1, p 1 rib. 
[2]  Main part is in sl st rib.

1ST ROW:    K 2, * sl 2, k 4, rep from * to last 4 sts, sl 2, k 2.

2ND ROW:    P.  Rep these 2 rows.  [3] Center-front panel, collar & facing are in st st.

BACK: 
With #8 needles cast on 84 [90, 96, 102, 108]. 

Work 8 rows in st 1. 

Change to #6 needles & st 2.  Work 15” ]15“, 15 ½”, 15 ½”, 16“] or desired length to armholes.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Cast off 2 [3, 4, 5, 6] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 each end of every k row until 72 [74, 78, 80, 82] sts rem. 

Work until armholes are 7 ½” [7 ¾”, 8“, 8 ¼”, 8 ½”] measured on the straight, end with p row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
Cast off at beg of next & following rows 8[8, 9, 9, 9] sts 4 times & 8 [9, 8, 9,9] twice. 

Cast off remaining 24 [24, 26, 26, 28] sts for neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #8 needles cast on 56 [60, 62, 66, 70]. 

Work 8 rows in st 1.  Change to #6 needles.

1ST ROW:  K 2, * sl 2, k 4, rep from * to last 30 [28, 30, 28, 32] sts, sl 2, k 28 [26, 28, 26, 30].

2ND ROW:  :  P. 

Rep these 2 rows. 

Work until front measures same as back to armholes, end at side edge.

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Cast off 2 [3, 4, 5, 6] at beg of next row. 

Dec 1 at same edge every k row until 50 [52, 53, 55, 57] sts rem. 

Work until armhole is 5 ½” [5 ¾”, 6“, 6 ¼”, 6 ½”] measured on the straight, end at center-front edge.

SHAPE NECK: 
1ST row:  Cast off 14 [15, 15, 16, 18]. P to end. 

Dec 1 at neck edge every row 12 times.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
Cast off at armhole edge 8 [8, 9, 9, 9] sts twice & 8 [9, 8, 9, 9] once.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Mark positions for 4 pairs of buttons on Left Front, first pair 4” above lower edge & 4th pair 1” below neck. 

Follow instructions for Left Front, reverse shapings & center-front panel & work buttonholes to correspond with markers as follows:  from center-front edge k 3, cast off 4, k 13 [10, 13, 10, 15], cast off 4, work to end. 

In next row cast on 4 above cast-off sts.

LEFT FRONT FACING: 
With #8 needles cast on 34.  Work in st 3. 

Work until facing measures same as front to neck, end with p row.

SHAPE NECK: 
1st row:  Cast off 14 [15, 15, 16, 18], k to end. 

Dec 1 at neck edge every row 12 times. 

Work 5 rows.  Cast off rem sts.

RIGHT FRONT FACING: 
Follow instructions for left facing reversing shapings & work buttonholes to correspond with those in right front as follows:  k 10 [13, 10, 13, 8], cast off 4, k 13 [10, 13, 10, 15], cast off 4, k 3. 

In next row cast on 4 above cast-off sts.

SLEEVES: 
With #8 needles cast on 48 [48, 48, 54, 54]. 

Work 8 rows in st 1. 

Change to #6 needles & st 2.  Work 2 rows. 

Inc 1 each end of next & every 6th row until there are 66 [70, 74, 78, 82] sts. 

Work until sleeve measures 17 ½” [17 ½”, 18“, 18“, 18“] or desired seam length.

SHAPE TOP: 
Cast off 2 [3, 4, 5, 6] at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 each end of every k row until 42 sts rem. 

Cast off at beg of next & following rows 2 sts 4 times, 3 sts 4 times & 4 sts twice.  Cast off.

COLLAR: 
With #8 needles cast on 60 [64, 68, 72, 76]. 

Work in st 3. 

Inc 1 each end of every 8th row until there are 66 [70, 74, 78, 82] sts. 

Work until collar measures 4 ½”.  Cast off loosely. 

Work another piece in same way.

FINISHING: 
Sew shoulder seams. 

Set in sleeves. 

Sew side & sleeve seams. 

Place collar pieces wrong sides together, tack around edges. 

Tack facings to fronts in same way. 

Sew collar to neck to within 2 ½” of center-front edges. 

Work 1 row of firm dc around front & collar edges, work through double thickness. 

Remove tacking threads.  

Buttonhole stitch around double thickness of buttonholes.  Press. 

Sew on buttons.
