1935 Crochet Sports Jacket #178

A timeless classic, which can be quickly created.  You’ll find it’s simple lines perfect for many events.

SIZE:  34 - 36

MATERIALS: 

Clark’s ONT Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 7 balls of Red, & 26 balls of Mercerized Crochet, size 10 of Navy. 

Use one strand of each color together.

#2 Steel Crochet hook

GAUGE: 

2 patts = 1 in;

2 rows = 1 in

BACK  [Left Half]: 

Beg at lower edge, ch 51, turn.  [Using one strand of each color’]

1^st row:  DC in 4^th ch from hook, dc in each st of foundation ch. Ch 5, turn.

2^nd row:  Insert hook in 1^st dc, draw out a loop, * ch 2 [leaving 2 loops on hook] yo, sk next 2 dc, insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, [4 loops on hook], yo & work off 2 loops at a time [as a tr].  Ch 2, insert hook in same st.  Rep from * to end of row, end with ch 2 & always make dc to make edge even.  Ch 3, turn.  [Count turning ch 3 as 1 dc thru out directions.]

3^rd row:  DC under next ch 2 sp.  Make long dc in next triangular sp, * 2 dc under next ch 2 sp, make long dc in next triangular sp.  Rep from * to end of row make 1 dc in turning ch 5.  Ch 5, turn.

4^th to 9^th rows incl:  Alternate 2^nd & 3^rd rows.  At end of 9^th row, ch 5, turn.

10^th row:  To shape side seam at waistline, work thus--insert hook in 1^st dc, * draw out a loop, ch 2 [leave 2 loops on hook], yo, sk next 3 dc, [dec] insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, [4 loops on hook], yo & work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2,  insert hook in same st.  Rep from * 2 more times.  Then cont with patt thru out row, as done prev, sk 2 dc instead of 3 dc, ch 3, turn.

11^th to 19^th rows incl:  Work evenly.

20^th row:  Same as 10^th row.

21^st to 29^th rows incl:  Work evenly.  At end of 29^th row, ch 5, turn.

30^th row:  To inc at this point, work as follows:  Insert hook in 1^st dc, * draw out a loop, ch 2, [leave 2 loops on hook], yo, sk next 1 dc, insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, [4 loops on hook], yo & work off 2 loops at a time [as a tr].  Ch 2, insert hook in same st.  Rep from * 2 more times, then cont with patt for rest of row, sk 2 dc instead of 1 dc.  Ch 3, turn.

31^st to 35^th rows incl:  Work evenly.

36^th row:  Same as 30^th row.

37^th row:  Work evenly this & all odd rows thru out.

38^th, 40^th & 42^nd rows:  Same as 30^th row.

44^th row:  Beg to Shape Armhole.  Same as 10^th row.

46^th, 48, 50^th & 52^nd rows:  Same as 10^th row.

54^th row:  Work evenly.

56^th row:  Work this & all even rows to 68^th row incl, same as 10^th row.

69^th to 73^rd rows incl:  Work evenly, break off.

BACK  [Right Half]: 

Reverse directions for Left Half of Back. 

That is, make incs & decs at end of rows instead of at beg.  This is very important, since there is right & wrong side of work.

FRONT  [Right Side]: 

Ch 72, turn.

1^st row:  Dc in 4^th ch from hook, dc in each st of foundation ch, ch 5, turn.

2^nd to 25^th rows incl.  Cont with patt evenly.  At end of 25^th row, ch 5, turn.

26^th row:  Same as 10 row or Left Half of Back.

27^th to 33^rd rows incl:  Work evenly.  At end of 33^rd row, ch 5, turn.

34^th row:  Same as 30^th row of Left Half of Back.

35^th to 37^th rows incl:  Work evenly.

38^th row:  Same as 34^th row.

39^th row:  Work evenly.

40^th to 43^rd rows incl:  Alternate 38^th & 39^th rows.  At end of 43^rd row, ch 1, turn.

44^th row:  Beg to Shape Armhole, sc in each of next 9 dc, ch 5, insert hook in st where last sc was made, then cont from * of 10^th row of Left Half of Back.

45^th row:  Work evenly, ch 1, turn.

46^th row:  Sc in 1^st dc, sc in each of next 3 dc, ch 5, insert hook in st where last sc was made, then cont from * of 10^th row of Back.

47^th row:  Work evenly this & all odd rows from here on to 67^th row [last row].

48^th row:  Work same as 10^th row of Back for this & all even rows [except 60^th row, which is worked same as 46^th row].  At end of 67^th row, fasten off.

FRONT  [Left Side]: 

Reverse directions for Right Side of Front. 

That is, shape side seam & armhole at ends of rows instead of beg.

RAGLAN SLEEVE  [Right]: 

Ch 52, turn.

1^st row:  Dc in 4^th ch from hook, dc in each st of foundation ch, ch 5, turn.

2^nd to 5^th rows incl:  Work evenly in jacket patt.

6^th row:  To inc at this point work thus:  insert hook in 1^st dc, * draw out a loop, ch 2, [leaving 2 loops on hook], yo, sk next 1 dc, insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, [4 loops on hook], yo & work off 2 loops at a time, ch 2, insert hook in same st.  * Rep from * to * 2 more times, then cont with patt, sk 2 dc instead of 1 dc to within 6 dc [incl turning ch 3] from end of row, then insert hook in same st.  Rep from * to * 3 times, dc to make edge even, ch 3, turn.

7^th row:  Work evenly. 

From here on, work as follows:  8^th, 16^th, 24^th, 30^th, 36^th, 42, & 48^th rows:  Same as 6^th row.  Work evenly all other rows to 53^rd row incl.  At end of 53^rd row, ch 1, turn.

54^th row:  Beg to Shape Sleeve.  Sc in 1^st dc, sc in each of next 6 dc, ch 5, insert hook in st where last sc was made, & cont with patt to within 6 dc from end of row [count turning ch 3 as 1 dc].  Ch 3, turn.

55^th row:  Work evenly.  Ch 1, turn.

56^th row:  Sc in 1^st dc, sc in each of next 4 dc, ch 5, insert hook in st where last sc was made, * draw out a loop, ch 2 [leave 2 loops on hook], yo, sk next 3 dc, [dec], insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, [4 loops on hook] yo & work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2, insert hook in same st.  Rep from * across to within 4 dc from end of row, ch 3, turn.

57^th to 61^st rows incl:  Work evenly.  At end of 61^st row, ch 1, turn.

62^nd row:  Sc in 1^st dc, sc in each of next 3 dc, ch 5, insert hook in st where last sc was made, & cont with patt to end of row.  Do not dec at this end.  Ch 3, turn.

63^rd row:  Work evenly, ch 1, turn.

64^th row:  Same as 62^nd row.

65^th, 66^th, & 67^th rows:  Work evenly.  At end of 67^th row, ch 5, turn.

68^th row:  Insert hook in 1^st dc, draw out loop, ch 2 [leave 2 loops on hook], yo, sk next 2 dc, * insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, yo & work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2, insert hook in same st, draw out a loop, ch 2, yo, sk next 3 dc.  Rep from * to end of row, ch 3, turn.

69^th to 73^rd rows incl:  Work evenly.  At end of 73^rd row, ch 5, turn.

74^th row:  Same as 68^th row.

75^th row:  Work evenly.  Ch 5, turn.

76^th row:  Insert hook in 1^st dc, draw out a loop, ch 2, yo, sk next 2 dc, insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, yo & work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2, insert hook in same st.  Draw out a loop, ch 2, yo, sk next 2 dc, * insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, yo & work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2, insert hook in same st, draw out a loop, ch 2, yo, sk next 3 dc.  Rep from * to end of row, ch 3, turn.

77^th row:  Work evenly, ch 5, turn.

78^th row:  Insert hook in 1^st dc, * draw out a loop, ch 2, yo, sk next 3 dc, insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, yo & work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2, insert hook in same st.  Rep from * to end of row.  Ch 3, turn.

79^th, 80^th, 81^st rows:  Work evenly.  At end of 81^st row, ch 5, turn.

82^nd row:  Insert hook in 1^st dc, draw out loop, ch 2, yo, sk next 4 dc, * insert hook in next dc, draw out a loop, yo, work off 2 loops at a time.  Ch 2, yo, sk next 3 dc.  Rep from * to end of row, ch 3, turn.

83^rd row:  Work evenly.  Break off. 

Reverse directions for Left Sleeve [dec at end of rows instead of at beg]. 

Whip seams tog. 

COLLAR BAND: 

1^st to 4^th rows incl:  Holding wrong side towards you, attach thread at front seam point of raglan sleeve. 

For st, refer again to 2^nd row of Back of Jacket, & rep st patt. 

Work across to other front seam point of sleeve.
