Vintage 1945 Puff Stitch Stripe Purse #219

Materials:

Hiawatha Belastraw Art. #35, 3 tubes, or

Hiawatha Strawlite Art. #47, 4 tubes, or

#0 Steel Crochet Hook, or  #3 Bone Crochet Hook

Lining Material & Buckram

Hiawatha Lucite Bag tops #6221

Center Section: 

Make a 19” ch.

1^st row:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook & in each ch across.  Number of sts must be multiple of 3 plus 1.  Ch 1, turn.

2^nd row:  Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2^nd row until there are 6 rows of sc.  Ch 1, turn.

7^th row [1^st pattern row]:  Sc in 1^st st, * draw up loop on hook to measure ½”, [thread over, draw up a loop in same place as sc] 3 times; thread over & draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten [puff st made] sk 2 sc, sc in next sc.  Repeat from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

8^th row [2^nd pattern st row]:  Sc in sc, * ch 1, puff st in same place as sc, sc in next sc.  Repeat from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

9^th row:  Sc in sc, * sc in fastening ch, sc in side of puff st, sc in next sc.  Repeat from * across.  Ch 1, turn.

10^th, 11^th & 12^th rows:  Repeat 7^th, 8^th & 9^th rows. 

*  Work 5 more rows of sc, then repeat 6 rows of Pattern Stitch Stripe once more. 

Repeat from * once more, then work 5 more rows of sc.  Fasten off.

Gusset [Make 2]: 

Ch 20.

1^st row:  Sc in 2^nd ch from hook & in each ch across [19 sc].  Ch 1, turn.

2^nd row:  Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2^nd row until there are 6 rows of sc.

7^th row:  Same as 1^st Pattern st row of Center Section until there are 6 puff sts, work 2 puff sts along end & [working along other side of foundation ch] 6 puff sts along other side.  Ch 1, turn.

8^th row:  Work in Pattern, making 2 puff sts in each of 2 end puff sts [16 puff sts].  Ch 1, turn.

9^th row:  work 3 sc over each puff st along 2 sides, & 4 sc over each of 4 center puff sts.  Ch 1, turn.

10^th row:  Work 17 puff sts around.  Ch 1, turn.

11^th row:  Work in Pattern, making 2 puff sts over each of 3 center puff sts. 
Ch 1, turn. 

12^th row:  work 3 sc over each puff st.  Ch 1, turn. 

Work sc around 3 sides of gusset, inc 3 sts at bottom curve on each row, until there are 6 rows of sc.  Fasten off.

Finishing: 

Cut linings & interlining, using crochet pieces as pattern. 

With Center Section toward you, crochet gussets in place. 

Work 1 row sc along top edges of Center Section, drawing in to fit lucite tops. 

Make lining & sew in place. 

Sew on lucite tops. 

Using double thread, make a 30” chain, then work sl st back along chain. 

Draw chain through tops & knot ends together. 

Make another chain & draw through from opposite side. 

Work row of sc along tops of gussets, making 2 small loops over cords [at top of pattern st stripes].
