Free Pattern - 1943 Fringed Envelope Purse #220

Vintage 1943 Fringed Envelope Purse #220

MATERIALS:
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist,
OR
Bucilla Strawkraft [ all rayon ], 4 skeins
#0 Steel Hook
½ yd each Buckram & Lining Material

GAUGE: 
11 pattern  sts = 2”;    
4 rnds = 1”

BAGCh 47, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook & in each st to end [46 sts].

PatternCh 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, * 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st; rep from * to end.

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, * 1 sc in dc, 1 dc in sc; rep from * to end. 

Rep 2nd row until 20” from beg.  Fasten off. 

Turn, working from wrong side of last row [this will be right side of bag], join 3” below last row on long edge & work a row of ch 1 & 1 sl st up to corner, cont across last row [top] & for 3” down opposite long edge [flap].  Fasten off.

Fringe
Working from wrong side, work sc on remaining free edges.  Fasten off. 

Working from same side as last sc row beg 3” from top, work 1 sc in 1st sc, * ch 12, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * to corner.  Fasten off. 

Beg at opposite corner, work fringe on other side. 

TAB:  Ch 4, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st.

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc & 1 dc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 1 dc & 1 sc in last st [5 sts]. 

3rd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc & 1 dc in 1st st, work patt to within 1 st of end, 1 dc & 1 sc in last st. 

Rep last row twice [11 sts]. 

Ch 3, turn [ch-3 counts as 1 dc], * 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc; rep from * to end. 

Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first dc, work patt, end 1 sc in top of ch 3. 

Rep last 2 rows until 5” from point. 

Work 1 row of ch 1 & 1 sl st, around entire tab.  Fasten off.

STRAP: 
Ch 16, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, * 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from *, end 1 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc all in last st, cont on other side of ch, working ** 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from **, end 1 sc & 1 dc in last st.  Join with sl st.  Fasten off, leaving end for sewing.

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

FINISHING: 
Steam lightly. 

Fold bag, leaving 3” of flap free, sew sides at inner edge of fringe. 

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

Sew on tab & strap as shown in photo.
