Free Pattern - 1945 Lacy Step-Ins #1343

1945 LACY STEP-INS #1343

Snug & lovely step-ins. These featherweight undies are tops - they hug the figure
beautifully & do not add one whit to bulk…designed to fit sizes 35 to 37. See how
the ribbing hugs waistline.

MATERIALS:
5 oz Patons Beehive Fingering Wool, 3 Ply
1 Pair Each # 9 & #13 Knitting Needles
1 #10 Crochet Hook
3 Small Pearl Buttons
1yd Narrow Ribbon

MEASUREMENTS:
Length from top of from to lower edge = 20½”
Width all around underarms = 25”

TENSION:
8 sts = 1” width
9 rows = 1” depth

NOTE:
Work into back of all cast-on sts.

FRONT:
Begin at lower edge in centre. Cast on 33 sts, use #13 needles, & work 4
rows in K 1, P 1 rib.

5TH ROW: Rib 3, cast off 3, rib 8, cast off 3, rib 8, cast off 3, rib 2.

6TH ROW: Rib 3, cast on 3, rib 9, cast on 3, rib 9, cast on 3, rib 3.

Cont in rib until it meas 2 ½” from beg.

Change to #9 needles & work 2 more rows, but cast on 40 sts at beg of each row,
then cast on 10 sts at beg of next 2 rows (133).

Change to patt, as follows:
1ST ROW: K 8, * wfd, K 2, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, K 2, wfd, K 15; rep from * to end,
finishing K 8.

2ND & ALT ROWS: P 5, * K 2, P 9; rep from * to end, finishing P 5.

3RD ROW: K 9, wfd, K 1, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, K 1, wfd, K 17; rep from * to end, finishing
K 9.

5TH ROW: K 10, wfd, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, wfd, K 19, rep from * to end, finishing K 10.

6TH ROW: Rep 2nd row.

Work 4 compl patts, then dec 1 st at both ends of next & every 4th row following until 101
sts rem, finishing RS toward you after 6th row.

Now work in patt, as follows:
1ST ROW: K 14, * wfd, K 2, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, K 2, wfd, K 15, rep from * to end, finishing
K 14.

2ND & EVERY ALT ROW: * K 2, P 9, rep from * to end, finishing K 2.

3RD ROW: K 15, * wfd, K 1, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, K 1, wfd, K 17; rep from * to end, finishing
K 15.

5TH ROW: K 16, * wfd, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso, wfd, K 19, rep from * to end, finishing K 16.

6TH ROW: Rep 2nd row.

Cont until work meas 13 ½” from beg, meas down middle.

Change to #13 needles & work 2 ½” K 1, P 1 rib.

Change again to #9 needles & patt, as last 6 rows, & work 4 ¾”, finishing RS
toward you.

Now divide sts as follows:
NEXT ROW: Cast off 3, patt 45, cast off 3, patt 48.

Cont on last 49 sts, cast off 3 sts at beg of every row until 1 st rems. Cast off.

Join wool to neck edge of other 46 sts & work to match.

BACK:
Work like front, omit buttonholes until 4 ¾” in patt, have been worked above waist ribbing.
Cast off.

FINISHING:
Press work on WS with warm iron & damp cloth.

Sew up side seams & press.

Now work all around top edge as follows: 1 DC, 3 CH, 1 DC into every 3rd st around, then
work in same way around leg edges.

Now work 2nd row into each CH lp of last row.

Sew on buttons & shoulder-straps.
