Vintage 1945 Knit Fleur de Leis Purse #278

Materials:

Chadwicks Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 6 balls [1 oz balls] of Navy [MC] & 2 balls of Scarlet [CC]

1 Pair #3 [3mm] Knitting Needles

¾ yd Felt or Lining Material

4 Bone Rings 2” diameter

2 - 6” rulers

Cardboard

Gauge:  7 sts = 1”;    8 rows =  1”

Bottom Section: 

With MC, cast on 41 sts.

1^st row:  K across.

2^nd row:  P across.

3^rd row:  Attach CC, k 5 MC, * k 1 CC, k 5 MC.  Rep from * across. 

Always carry unused color loosely across wrong side of work.

4^th row:  P 4 MC, * p 3 CC, p3 MC.  Rep from * across, end with p 4 MC.

5^th row:  K 5 MC, * k1 CC, k 5 MC.  Rep from * across.  Drop CC.

6^th row:  Rep 2^nd row.

7^th row:  Rep 1^st row.

8^th row:  Pick up CC, p 2 MC, * p 1 CC, p 5 MC.  Rep from * across, end with p 2 MC.

9^th row:  K 1 MC, * k 3 CC, k 3 MC.  Rep from * across, end with k 1, MC.

10^th row:  Rep 8^th row.  Drop CC. 

Rep these 10 rows 3 more times, then rep 1^st & 2^nd rows once more.  Bind off.

Sidepiece [Make 4]: 

Starting at top with MC, cast on 41 sts. 

Work 10 rows same as Bottom Section, then, keep continuity of pattern, inc 1 st at beg of each row until there are 81 sts on needle. 

Now dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 41 sts remain. 

Work 2 more rows of MC.  Bind off.

Handle: 

With MC, cast on 16 sts.

1^st row:  * K 1, bring yarn forward, sl 1 as if to p, carry yarn to back of work.  Rep from * across. 

Rep 1^st row until piece measures 12”. 

Bind off knit 2 sts tog across row. 

Finishing: 

With MC, cover 4 rings by working sc closely over each ring. 

Block sections of bag. 

Allowing ½” all around for seams, cut lining to correspond with Bottom Section & Sidepieces. 

Sew Sidepieces of bag together. 

Sew bottom Section in place. 

Join lining in same way. 

Insert a square of cardboard in bottom of bag & rulers at top of 2 facing sections. 

Line bag, tacking lining so that cardboard & rulers remain in place. 

Sew a covered ring to center top of each Sidepiece. 

Sew end of Handle to one reinforced side at outer base of the ring, then slip loop through remaining rings to close.
