Vintage Classic Handbag #277
Quick & easy to create, this example of classic elegance in a circle purse will become a season-spanning favorite!

MATERIALS: 
J & P Coats or Clarks ONT Pearl Cotton, size 5, 16 balls of Black
#6 Bone Crochet Hook
1/3 yd Felt for Lining Material
Button

GAUGE: 
3 ½ sts = 1”; 
4 rnds = 1”

Use 3 threads throughout.

FRONT: 
Starting at center, ch 4.  Join with sl st.

1ST RND:  10 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc around [20 sc].

3RD RND:  Sc in each sc around.

4TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next sc.  Rep from * around [30 sc]. 

5TH RND:  Rep 3rd rnd.

6TH RND:  Rep 4th rnd [45 sc].

7TH & 8TH RNDS:  Rep 3rd rnd.

9TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc.  Rep from * around [60 sc].

10TH, 11TH & 12TH RNDS:  Rep 3rd rnd.

13TH RND:  Rep 9th rnd [80 sc].

14TH & 15TH RNDS:  Rep 3rd rnd.

16TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc.  Rep from * around [100 sc].

17TH TO 20TH RNDS:  Rep 3rd rnd.

21ST RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc.  Rep from * around [110 sc].

22ND & 23RD RNDS:  Rep 3rd rnd.  Break off. 

Piece measures about 12” diameter.

BACK: 
Work same as Front until 19th rnd is complete.

20TH RND:  Ch 6, sk 6 sc, sc in next sc [tab loop], sc in each rem sc.

21ST RND:  2 Sc in next ch, sc in next 5 ch, sc in next 4 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc.  Rep from * around [110 sc].

22ND & 23RD RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.  Break off.

HANDLE: 
Ch 8.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 1, turn. 

Rep 2nd row until piece measures 16”. 

Fold piece in half the long way & work sc thru both thicknesses of long edge.  Break off. 

TAB: 
Starting at center, ch 17.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 14 ch, 3 sc in last ch; then, working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in 14 ch.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in next 3 sc, sc in 15 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 15 sc.

3RD RND:  Sc in next sc, ch 4, sk 4 sc, sc in each sc to center sc of 3-sc group at other end, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each rem sc.

4TH RND:  Sc in each ch & each sc around.  Break off.

Line Front & Back with circles of felt cut slightly smaller than crocheted pieces. 

Slit felt of Back to correspond with Tab loop & overcast edges. 

For muff piece, cut 2 pieces of felt. 

Sew 2 pockets [3 ½” x 5”] in place on one muff piece. 

Machine stitch muff pieces together along edge & across at fold. 

Fold muff piece at center [with pockets on outside] & whip curved edges to corresponding edges of Front & Back. 

Leaving 7”opening, work sc thru both thicknesses of lower Back & Front edges. 

Turn top edge of Front over top edge of muff piece. 

Sew pointed end of Tab & button to center of Front. 

Slip other end of Tab thru Tab loop on Back & button to Front. 

Fold Handle in half & sew ends to top of right opening of muff.
