Vintage 1945 Irish Crochet Lace Blouse #521


A clever woman quickly & very easily crochets this charming lace blouse with a delightful yoke design…a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14 & 16 are in brackets.

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats 14 [16, 18] balls; or
Clark’s ONT Best Six cord mercerized Crochet, size 30, 19 [21, 23] balls
#10 Steel Crochet Hook
Shoulder Pads

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust 32” [34”, 36”];  Width across back at underarm 16” [16”, 18”];  Width across front at underarm 16” [18”, 18”];  Length of side seam 12” [12”, 14 ½”];   Length from shoulder to lower edge 19” [19 ½”, 22”].

GAUGE: 
4 loops = 1”;    
6 rows = 1”

BACK: 
Start at lower edge, make ch 21” long.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 9th ch from hook.  * Ch 5, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch.  Rep from * across until there are on row 61 [61, 70] loops.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 7, turn.

2ND & 3RD ROWS:  * Sc in next loop, ch 5.  Rep from * across, end with sc in last loop.  Ch 7, turn.

4TH ROW:  * Sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times; ch 3, [4 dc in next loop] twice, ch 3.  Rep from * across to last 6 loops, end with sc, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times.  Ch 7, turn.

5TH ROW:  * Sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 5 times; ch 2, dc in next loop, dc in next 8 dc, dc in next loop, ch 2.  Rep from * across, end with [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times.  Ch 7, turn.

6TH ROW:  * Sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times; ch 3, sk 1 dc, dc in next 8 dc, ch 3.  Rep from * across, end with ch 3, sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times.  Ch 7, turn. 

7TH ROW:  Sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times; * ch 5, sc bet 4th & 5th dc, ch 5, sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 7 times.  Rep from * across.  Ch 7, turn.

8TH THRU 12TH ROWS:  * Sc in next loop, ch 5.  Rep from * across, end with sc in last loop.  Ch 7, turn.

13TH ROW:  Sc in next loop, ch 5, sc in next loop, * ch 3, [4 dc in next loop] twice; ch 3, [sc in next loop, ch 5] 6 times; sc in next loop.  Rep from * across, end with ch 3, [sc in next loop, ch 5] twice; sc in last loop.  Ch 7, turn.

14TH ROW:  Sc in next loop, ch 5, sc in next loop, * ch 2, dc in next loop, dc in next 8 dc, dc in next loop, ch 2, sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 5 times.  Rep from * across, end with [ch 5, sc in next loop] twice.  Ch 7, turn.

15TH ROW:  Sc in next loop, ch 5, sc in next loop, * ch 3, sk 1 dc, dc in next 8 dc, ch 3, sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 6 times.  Rep from * across, end with [ch 5, sc in next loop] twice.  Ch 7, turn.

16TH ROW:  Sc in next loop, [ch 5, sc in next loop] twice; * ch 5, sc bet 4th & 5th dc, [ch 5, sc in next loop] 8 times.  Rep from * across, end with [ch 5, sc in next loop] 3 times.  Ch 7, turn.

17TH THRU 21ST ROWS:  Sc in next loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop.  Rep from * across.  Ch 7, turn.

The last 18 rows [4th thru 21st rows] make up the pattern. 

Keeping continuity of pattern, dec 1 loop at both ends of next row & every other row thereafter until there rem on row 53 [53, 60] loops.  [to dec 1 loop at beg of row, sl st across 1st loop; to dec 1 loop at end of row, work to last loop.  Ch 7, turn.] 

Work straight until piece meas in all 5” [5”, 6”]. 

Inc 1 loop at both ends of next row & every 3rd row thereafter until there are on row 65 [65, 72] loops. 

Work straight until piece meas in all 12” [12”, 14 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Dec 3 loops at both ends of next row. 

Dec 1 loop at both ends of every other row until there rem 51 [53, 56] loops. 

Work straight until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping, 7” [7 ½”, 7 ½”]. 

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
Dec at beg of next 4 rows 8 [8, 9] loops.  Break off.

FRONT: 
Start at lower edge, make ch 21” long.

1ST ROW:  Same as 1st row on back until there are on row 61 [70, 70] loops.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 7, turn.

Work as for back, dec until there rem on row 53 [60, 60] loops. 

Work straight until piece meas in all 5” [5”, 6”]. 

Inc as for back until there are on row 65 [72, 72] loops. 

Work straight until piece meas in all 12” [12”, 14 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Dec 3 loops at both ends of next row. 

Dec 1 loop at both ends of every other row until there rem 51 [56, 56] loops.

NEXT ROW:  Work in pattern across 25 [28, 28] loops.  Ch 7, turn. 

Work over these sts only until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 4 ½” [5”, 4 ½”].

SHAPE NECK: 
Dec 2 loops at neck edge on next row. 

Dec 1 loop at neck edge each row until there rem 16 [16, 18] loops. 

Work straight until piece meas same as back, end at armhole edge.

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
Dec at armhole edge twice 8 [8, 9] loops.  Break off.

Attach thread at base of piece just made, sk 1 loop on size 12 only, & work to correspond.

SLEEVES: 
Start at lower edge, make ch 14” long.

1ST ROW:  Work as for back until there are 43 loops on row.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 7, turn. 

Work as for back, inc 1 loop at both ends of 4th row & every other row thereafter until there are on row 49 [51, 53] loops. 

Work straight until piece meas in all 3 ½” [4”, 4 ½”].

SHAPE TOP: 
Dec 3 loops at both ends of next row. 

Dec 1 loop at both ends of each row until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 4” [4 ½”, 5”].  Break off.

ASSEMBLING: 
Sew shoulder & underarm seams. 

Sew sleeve seams & sew in sleeves. 
Make rnd of sc evenly around lower edge & sleeve edge. 

Make 3 rows of sc around neck edge & center front opening, making 4 ch-5 buttonholes evenly across right front on 2nd row & holding neck edge in to fit.

RUFFLE: 
Start at inner edge, make ch 24” [25”, 26”].

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each ch across.  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each sc across.  Ch 5, turn.

3RD ROW:  * Sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, ch 5.  Rep from * across, end with sk 1 sc, sc in last sc.  Ch 7, turn.

4TH ROW:  * Sc in next loop, ch 5, sc in same loop, ch 5.  Rep from * across.  Ch 7, turn.

5TH, 6TH & 7TH ROWS:  Sc in next loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop.  Rep from * across.  Break off. 

Sew ruffle to blouse as in photo.

BUTTON: 
[MAKE 4]:  Start at center, ch 3, join.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc around. 

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.

4TH & 6TH RNDS:  * Draw up loop in next 2 sc, yo & draw thru all loops on hook.  Rep from * around.  Break off. 

Stuff firmly with cotton. 

Sew up opening. 

Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. 

Sew in shoulder pads.
