Vintage 1935 Lacy Stripes Blouse #518

A clever woman quickly & very easily crochets this charming overblouse with a delightful knit detail on the sleeves & waistband…all in a cool & comfortable stripe pattern…a season-spanning, wardrobe favorite!

SIZES: 
Directions are for size 32.

MATERIALS:
Nun’s Nomotta Permanently Mothproof Reseda Wool, 3 balls Ivory, 4 balls Blue
#8 Crochet Hook
#2 Knitting Needles

Work Loosely.

1ST ROW:  With blue, ch 92 for edge of sleeve.  Sk 1 ch & work 90 sc on ch, ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW:  Work star st as follows:  sk 1 ch, draw up loop in other 2 ch, draw up loop in each of first 3 sc [both top threads of sts].  Now there are 6 loops on hook.  Yo hook, & draw thru 6 loops.  Ch 1 to finish star.  * Draw up loop in ch 1 at top of star, pick up single thread only.  Draw up loop in side of star, pick up back thread only.  Draw up loop in last sc used for prev star.  Draw up loop in each of next 2 sc [6 loops on hook], yo, & draw thru 6 loops.  Ch 1 to finish.   Rep from * to end of row [45 stars], work loosely. 

These first 2 rows should meas 3/8” to ½” wide.  Break off blue, join ivory, & turn to work back.

3RD ROW:  1 Sc in st at top of each star & in st bet stars, make 90 sts in row.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Work knot st as follows:  1 sc in first 2 sc.  * Draw out loop on hook about ½”, yo, & draw thru ½” loop, hold loop flat with thumb.  Work 1 sc thru back thread of loop.  This is half st & sc forms knot in center of st.  Rep from * once for whole knot st.  Sk 2 sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc.  Rep from * across row, make 22 whole knot sts, & end with 2 sc in last sts as at beg.  Ch 3, turn. 

5TH ROW:  Work half knot st, 1 sc in round loop before knot of 1st st on prev row.  1 Sc in loop of st after knot.  * Make another whole knot st as before, & work 1 sc in loop before & after knot of next st on prev row.  Rep from *, work 21 whole knot sts in row, & end with half knot st as at beg, 1 dc in last sc of prev row.  Ch 3, turn.

6TH ROW:  1 Sc in loop of half st, * ch 2, 1 sc before & after knot of next st.  Rep from *, end with 1 sc in half st.  Break off ivory, join blue, ch 1, turn.

7TH ROW:  Work 1 sc in each sc, take up both top threads of sts, & work 2 sc over ch 2 bet sts. 

Rep patt from 2nd row until there are 3 blue & 3 ivory stripes.  Break yarn. 

After 3rd ivory stripe join blue at beg of last ivory sc row.  Ch 68 for lower part of front & break off. 

Fasten blue at end of last ivory row, & ch 69 for back.  Turn. 

Sk 1 ch work 68 sc on ch, 90 sc in ivory sts, & 68 sc on other ch.  [226 sc in row]. 

Cont patt stripes as before until there are 7 blue & 7 ivory stripes from beg of sleeve.  Join blue.

NEXT ROW:  Work 104 sc for back, which will take in 26 knot sts. 

Work stripes on these 104 sts until back has 5 ivory & 6 blue stripes.  Break off, & go back to work front. 

After last long ivory stripe, sk 44 sts [11 knot sts] from back, join blue, & work sc in rem 78 sts [19 knot sts] for front. 

Cont work stripes on 78 sts until there are 5 ivory & 6 blue stripes as on back. 

At end of last blue row at neck, ch 44 for shoulder. 

Join in top of last blue row on back.  Fasten & break off. 

Join ivory at lower edge of back & work stripes for rest of blouse & other sleeve to match first side.  Break off. 

FINISHING: 
With blue work 3 rows sc around neck, work first with wrong side of neck toward you; sk 1 st at each corner on all rows to make neck square; turn to work back at end of each row; & take up both top threads of sts. 

Break off, join ivory, & work 2 rows sc. 

Break off, join blue, & finish with 3 rows sc. 

On lower edge of front & back work 1 row sc as follows:  Use blue, & with right side of blouse toward you, work 3 sc in end of each blue stripe & 6 sc in end of each ivory stripe [120 sts in row].

RIBBING: 
With right side of blouse toward you, pick up 88 sts on edge of sleeve, omit first & last st of row. 

Use double thread yarn & k 2 sts, p 2 sts, for 15 rows blue, 10 rows ivory, 15 rows blue [3 ¾” ribbing].  Bind off. 

With right side of  blouse toward you pick up 120 sts on lower edge of front. 

Use double thread yarn, & make ribbing same as on sleeves. 

Do same on back.

PUTTING TOGETHER: 

Use blue & crochet seams tog carefully with sc sts, match sts of front edge with those on back edge.
