1945 Classic Cloche Hat & Clutch Set #1020

This classic hat & bag duo is perfection…the only problem is…in how many colors can you recreate the set!

MATERIALS:
HAT:
American Tread Company Star Pearl Cotton, Size #5, 11 – 60 yd balls
1 ½ yds Grosgrain Ribbon 2”
¼ yd Buckram
¼ yd Lining
Steel Crochet Hook #5 or #6
BAG:
American Tread Company Star Pearl Cotton, Size #5, 16 – 60 yd balls
½ yd Buckram
½ yd Lining
12” Zipper & Ornamental Pull
Steel Crochet Hook #5 or #6

GAUGE:
Both Hat & Bag are made with double strands of thread.
HAT:  8 sdc = 1” --- 6 rows = 1”
BAG:  8 sdc = 1” --- 6 sdc rows = 1” --- 2 shells = 1” --- 4 shell rows = 1”

HAT:
Ch 3, 8 sdc in 1st st of ch, [sdc is a hdc: yo, insert in st, pull thru & work off all lps at one time], join in 1st sdc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 2, 2 sdc in same sp, 2 sdc in each rem st.  Do not join this or following rows.

3RD ROW:  Place marker at beg of each row, 2 sdc in 1st st, * 1 sdc in next st, 2 sdc in next st, rep from * all around ending row with 1 sdc in last st.

4TH ROW:  Inc in every 3rd st.

5TH ROW:  Inc in every 4th st.

6TH ROW:  Inc in every 5th st.

7TH ROW:  Inc in every 6th st.

8TH ROW:  Inc in every 7th st.

9TH ROW:  Inc in every 4th st.

10TH ROW:  Inc in every 5th st.

11TH ROW:  Inc in every 6th st.

12TH ROW:  Inc in every 7th st.

NEXT 3 ROWS:  Work even in sdc.

16TH ROW:  Work even in sdc, ending row with 1 sc in each of last 3 sts.

17TH ROW:  Ch 1, working in back lp of st only, 1 sc in each st, join in 1st sc, [128 sts].

18TH ROW:  Ch 2, working in both lps of st, 1 sdc in same sp, 1 sdc in each st, [do not join this or following rows].

19TH ROW:  Inc in every 4th st.

NEXT 10 ROWS:  Work even in sdc.

30TH ROW:  Inc in every 16th st.

NEXT 5 ROWS:  Work even in sdc.

36TH ROW:  1 Sc in each of 1st 58 sts, 1 sdc in each rem st.

NEXT 5 ROWS:  Same as last row, break thread.

Press under damp cloth.

ROLL:
Ch 170, join being careful not to twist chain, ch 1, 1 sc in same sp with joining, 1 sc in each rem ch, [do not join this or following rows.]

2ND ROW:  1 Sc in each of next 34 sts, 1 sdc in each of next 23 sts, 1 dc in each of next 56 sts, 1 sdc in each of next 23 sts, 1 sc in each of next 34 sts.

NEXT 8 ROWS:  Work 1 sc in each sc, 1 sdc in each sdc & 1 dc in each dc.

NEXT ROW:  Work 1 sc in each st, break thread.

Fill roll with Cotton & sew edged tog.

LINING:
Cut piece of buckram to fit crown.

Cut piece of buckram head size desired.

Slash buckram at crown to within about  1” of bottom to fit crown.

Sew in position to crown, fit into hat.

Cut piece of lining for crown & cut lining for side of hat.

Seam side & sew lining to crown section.

Place over buckram, tack in position to buckram crown.

Place in hat & sew in position.  [Shaped part is front of hat.]

Sew stuffed roll in position to edge of hat.

Trim with ribbon & finish with tailored bow & streamers.

Use heavy sewing thread for all sewing needs.

BAG:
CENTER FRONT SECTION:
Ch 56, 2 dc in 4th st from hk, sk 3 chs, sc in next ch, * ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch, [shell] rep from * across row, ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW:  2 Dc in same sp, sc in ch 3 lp of next shell, * ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, sc in next ch 3 lp of next shell, rep from * across row, ch 4, turn.

Rep 2nd row until section meas 7 ½”, ch 1, turn & work 1 sc in each sc, dc & ch 3 lp across row, break thread.

CENTER BACK SECTION:
Work in same manner as center front section.

SIDE SECTION:  [MAKE 2]:
Ch 54, 1 sdc in 3rd st from hk, 1 sdc in each rem st of ch, ch 2, turn.

2ND ROW:  1 Sdc in each st, ch 2, turn.

Rep 2nd row until section meas 9”, break thread.

BOTTOM GUSSET:
Ch 12, sdc in 3rd st from hk, 1 sdc in each rem ch, ch 2 turn.

2ND ROW:  2 Sdc in 1st & last st & 1 sdc in each rem st, ch 2, turn.

3RD ROW:  Work even.

Rep last 2 rows, then work 54 rows even, ch 2, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Dec 1st & last st, then work 1 row even.

Rep last 2 rows, break thread.

Gather each side section to fit front section & sew in position.

If desired, press 3 small pleats on each side section, as shown in photo.

Fit bottom gusset in position.

LINING:
Cut strip of buckram about 13” wide & 16 ½” long.

Make 7 ½” fold, then fold again for 2” bottom gusset.

Cut lining material slightly larger than buckram, place over buckram & sew.

Cut 2 strips of materials for side gusset & overcast to lining.

Sew zipper into position.

Place Lining into bag & sew.

Attach ornamental zipper pull. 

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between 2 layers of lining & bag to give shape extra support.
