1944 Going in Circles Hat #1086

The clever crafter will delight in this amusing hat with circle accents.  It’s quick to create, easy to put on and always looks smart.
  
MATERIALS:
Bucilla Strawcraft
OR
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist [all rayon, 2 skeins Main Color [A] & 1 skein Contrast Color [B]
Bucilla or Fleisher’s White Crochet Hook #8
Bucilla or Fleisher’s White Crochet Hook #4
21” Hat Wire

Entire hat is made using 2 strands.

HAT:
With #8 hk & A, ch 4.

Join with sl st into ring, work 9 sc in rind.

Mark ends of rnds.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st [18 sts].

3RD RND:  1 Sc in each st.

4TH RND:  2 Sc in each st [36 sts].

5TH & 6TH RNDS:  1 Sc in each st.

7TH RND:  * 1 Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around [54 sts], sl st in next st.

8TH RND:  Fasten ends of wire tog, forming circle 6” diameter.  Work 1 sc in each st, working over wire.

Work 1 more rnd again catching up wire in sts.

Work 7 rnds even, sl st in next st.

1ST SHORT ROW:  Ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 30 sts, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

2ND SHORT ROW:  Sk sl st & 1 sc at beg of last row, join with sl st in next st, 1 sc in each st to within 3 sts of end, 1 sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Rep 2nd row 5 times, having 4 sts less in each succeeding short row.  Do not break off at end of last row.

Ch 1 & work 1 row sc around entire edge; join with sl st to 1st st of row.  Fasten off.

Deepest part is back of hat.

TRIMMING:
With #4 hk & single strand of B, ch 4.

Join with sl st into ring, work 8 sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st [16 sts].

3RD RND:  2 Sc in each st [32 sts].

Work 1 rnd even, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Make 4 of these circles.

Cut 4 circular pieces of cardboard [or stiff plastic] about 1/16” smaller than crocheted circles.

Make circle with A in same way.  Do not break off.

Join this circle to B circle as follows:
Place wrong sides of both pieces tog.

Slip cardboard circle bet them.

Work 1 row sc around with A, working from A side thru both pieces; join.  Fasten off.

Make 3 more A circles & join to B circles.

Work joining row of 1 more circle from A side & rem 2 from B side.

Sew 2 circles to each side of top of hat, as shown in photo.
