1943 Fringed Large Brimmed Hat & Clutch Bag #1088

MATERIALS:
HAT:
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist,
OR
Bucilla Strawkraft [ all rayon ], 4 skeins
#0 Steel Hook
OR
6” White Crochet Hook #I
41” of Hat Wire
Belting Ribbon

BAG:
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist,
OR
Bucilla Strawkraft [ all rayon ], 4 skeins

½ yd each Buckram & Lining Material

GAUGE:
HAT & BAG: 
11 pattern  sts = 2”;    
4 rnds = 1”
 

HAT:
CROWN:
Ch 4, join with sl st into ring.

Work 8 sc in ring, do not join.

Cont working 2 sc in each st.

Mark end of rnds.

3RD RND:  * 1 Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around [24 sts].

4TH RND:  * 1 Sc in each of 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around [32 sts].

Cont to inc 8 sts every rnd, having 1 more st bet incs after every inc rnd, until 64 sts.

Inc 1 st in every 10th st until 76 sts, work to end of rnd.

Work 1 rnd sc in back lp of each st, join with sl st in both lps of 1st sc of rnd.

1ST PATT RND:  RIGHT SIDE:  Ch 1, 1 sc in st with sl st, 1 dc in next st, * 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st; rep from *, end 1 sl st in 1st sc.

2ND RND:  Ch 3 [ch 3 counts as 1 dc], turn, 1 sc in next dc, * 1 dc in next sc, 1 sc in next dc; rep from *, end 1 sl st in top of ch 3 [76 sts].

3RD RND:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in same st as joining st, cont patt, end 1 dc in last st, 1 sl st in 1st sc.

Rep last 2 rnds twice.

Rep 2nd rnd once more [8 patt rnds].

1ST INC RND:  * Work 12 sts, work 1 sc & 1 dc in same st as last dc [1 full patt –2sts—increased]; rep from * 5 times, work to end of rnd, join [88 sts].

Work 7 rnds even.

2ND INC RND:  Inc 2 sts [1 patt] in every 14th st 6 times, finish rnd [100 sts].

Work 7 rnds even.

BRIM:
1ST INC RND:  Ch 1, turn, * 1 sc in each of 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * to end.

Mark end of rnds for center back [120 sts].

2ND INC RND:  Do not turn, cont around, inc 1 st in every 6th st [140 sts].

Work 2 rnds even.

3RD INC RND:  Inc 1 st in every 7th st [160 sts].  Cont in this way, inc 20 sts in rnd on 3rd rnd once more.

4TH INC RND:  Inc 20 sts every 4th rnd twice, having 1 st more bet incs after every inc rnd [220 sts].

Work 1 rnd even, do not break.

Join 41” of wire into 39” ring.

Work 1 rnd sc, working over wire rind.

Work 1 rnd sc, working in back lp of sts; 1 sl st in next st.

FRINGE:
* Ch 9, 1 sl st in next st; rep from * around.  Fasten off.

Steam lightly.

Sew belting ribbon into crown of hat, holding to desired headsize.

Trim as shown in photo. 

BAG
Ch 47, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook & in each st to end [46 sts].

PatternCh 1, turn, 1 sc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, * 1 sc in next st, 1 dc in next st; rep from * to end.

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, * 1 sc in dc, 1 dc in sc; rep from * to end. 

Rep 2nd row until 20” from beg.  Fasten off. 

Turn, working from wrong side of last row [this will be right side of bag], join 3” below last row on long edge & work a row of ch 1 & 1 sl st up to corner, cont across last row [top] & for 3” down opposite long edge [flap].  Fasten off.

Fringe
Working from wrong side, work sc on remaining free edges.  Fasten off. 

Working from same side as last sc row beg 3” from top, work 1 sc in 1st sc, * ch 12, 1 sc in next sc; rep from * to corner.  Fasten off. 

Beg at opposite corner, work fringe on other side. 

TAB:  Ch 4, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st.

2nd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc & 1 dc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, 1 dc & 1 sc in last st [5 sts]. 

3rd row:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc & 1 dc in 1st st, work patt to within 1 st of end, 1 dc & 1 sc in last st. 

Rep last row twice [11 sts]. 

Ch 3, turn [ch-3 counts as 1 dc], * 1 sc in next dc, 1 dc in next sc; rep from * to end. 

Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first dc, work patt, end 1 sc in top of ch 3. 

Rep last 2 rows until 5” from point. 

Work 1 row of ch 1 & 1 sl st, around entire tab.  Fasten off.

STRAP: 
Ch 16, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, * 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from *, end 1 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc all in last st, cont on other side of ch, working ** 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from **, end 1 sc & 1 dc in last st.  Join with sl st.  Fasten off, leaving end for sewing.

Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

FINISHING: 
Steam lightly. 

Fold bag, leaving 3” of flap free, sew sides at inner edge of fringe. 

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

Sew on tab & strap as shown in photo.
