1940’s Fluted Hat, Shoulder Bag, & Belt Set #1089

MATERIALS:
8 Tubes Corticelli Corde – Navy
#13 Aero Crochet Hook
½ yd – 42” Satin Lining
4 Rings – 1 ½” diameter
2 ¼ yds Millinery Wire
¼ yd Buckram
1 Belt Buckle
1 – 8” Zipper

TENSION:
5 sc = 1”

BAG:  [5 TUBES]:
BASE:
Ch 35 to meas 7”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, put in marker, sc in each ch to within 1 st of end, put in marker, 5 sc in last ch, put in marker, sc along other side of foundation chain to end, put in marker, 2 sc in same ch as 1st 3 sc [72 sc].

2ND RND:  3 Sc in next st [centre], sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st to 5 centre sts at other end, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 3 sc in next st [centre], sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc to last 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last st [8 inc].

3RD RND:  Sc, inc in ends & also 1 st each side of each end [not over prev incs – 8 inc].

Rep last 2 rnds 3 times more to 128 sts.

Work 1 rnd even.

Cut wire 1” longer than perimeter of base.

NEXT RND:  Sc over wire, overlapping extra length.  Do not break yarn.

Press on wrong side with damp cloth.

Outline shape on brown paper [for patt].

This completes base.

Work up sides as follows:
1ST RND:  * Sc in next 3 sts, tr in next st; rep from * around.

2ND RND:  Sc in each sc & ch 1 over each tr, around.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next 3 sts, dc around next tr on prev rnd, sk ch –1; rep from * around.

4TH RND:  Sc in each sc & ch 1 over each dc, around.

5TH RND:  * Sc in next 3 sts, dc around next dc on prev rnd, sk ch—1; rep from * around.

Rep last 2 rnds until sides meas 8” from wire.

Work last rnd over wire as in base.  Fasten off.

Pull into shape.

Press on wrong side with damp cloth.

TOP ZIPPER SECTION:
Crochet around zipper as follows:
Using stiletto or shar hk, make hole ¼” in from edge of material, 39 sc along length of zipper, put in marker, 3 sc across end, put in marker, 39 sc along other side, put in marker, & 3 sc across end.

Inc as in 3rd & 4th rows of base, until there are 128 sts in rnd.

Break yarn, leave enough to crochet to top of bag.

Press on wrong side with damp cloth.

STRAP:
Ch 9,  sc in 2nd ch from hk & in next 7 ch [8 sts].  Ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sc in each st,  Ch 1, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece is 34”.  Fasten off.

Make 2 other pieces 1 ½” long.  Fasten off.

Press on wrong side with damp cloth.

LINING:
Cut oval of cardboard [or plastic] same size as  base.

Cut 2 lining ovals slightly larer than cardboard & encase cardboard in lining.

Stitch to base of bag.

Cut 1 piece buckram 8” deep & same length as perimeter of base.

Cut 2 pieces lining 9” deep & 1” longer than buckram.

Encase buckram in lining, sew up side & stitch to top & bottom of bag.

FINISHING:
Crochet top zipper section to bag.

Attach 1 ring at each side with small strips of crochet.

Sew 1 end of long strap to 1 of fastened rings.

Lace other end of strap thru 2 rings as shown in photo & bring it thru other fastened ring & back on under side to rings on strap.

Lace thru these rings & fasten so that strap may be adjusted, as desired. 

HAT:  [3 TUBES]:
This hat is worked from wrong side.

Ch 2, work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hk.  Do not join, but mark beg of rnd.

1ST RND:  2 Sc in each st around.

2ND RND:  Same as 1st rnd [24 sts].

3RD RND:  * Sc in next st, tr in next st; rep from * around.

4TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next tr; rep from * around.

5TH RND:  [WRONG SIDE]:  * Sc in next 2 sc, yo, from right side of work insert hk from right to left behind next tr on prev row & draw lp thru, complete dc as usual, sk ch—1.  Rep from * around, end with dc [36 sts].

6TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next dc; rep from * around.

7TH RND:  * Sc in next 3 sc, dc around dc of prev rnd, sk ch—1.  Rep from * around, end with dc [48 sts].

8TH RND:  Work sc in each sc, & ch 1 over each dc around, inc 1 st in centre of each sc section [12 incs].

9TH RND:  * Sc in next 4 sc, dc around dc of prev rnd, sk ch—1.  Rep from * around, end with dc.

10TH & 11TH RNDS:  Rep 8th & 9th rnds.

Without increasing, work 2 more rnds as before.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

NEXT RND:  From right side of hat, thru back lps only, work sc in each sc & ch 1 over each dc around.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

Work side of crown as follows:
1ST RND:  * Sc in each sc, tr around next dc of prev patt rnd, sk ch—1; rep from * around.

2ND RND:  * Sc in each sc, ch 1, sk next tr; rep from * around.

Cont in patt [no inc] for 1”.

Then inc 1 st in each sc section, work 1” more in patt, inc 1 st in each sc section once more, work ½” in patt, end with patt row [96 sts].  Sl st in next st.  Mark for centre back.

BRIM:
1ST RND:  Thru back lps only, work sc in each sc & in each dc in rnd.  Mark centre front.

2ND RND:  Thru both lps, work * sc in next 3 sc, in next sc work sc & tr, work sc in rem 4 sc, work dc around dc of prev rnd.  Rep from * around [24 sts inc – 12 new stripes started].

3RD RND:  1ST SHORT ROW:  * Sc in 4 sc, ch 1, sk next tr, sc in 4 sc, ch 1, sk next dc.  Rep from * to 4 stripes beyond centre front.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

2ND SHORT ROW:  Work in stripe patt [no inc] across 8 stripes.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

3RD SHORT ROW:  Same as 1st short row across 12 stripes.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

4TH SHORT ROW:  Same as 2nd short row across 16 stripes.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

5TH SHORT ROW:  Same as 1st short row across 20 stripes.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

4TH RND:  Work in stripe patt completely around 24 stripes, inc 1 st in each sc section.  Sl st in next st.  Turn.

Work 4 more rnds as before [no inc].

Cut piece of wire 1” longer than perimeter of brim & work sc in every sc & in each dc over wire, overlapping extra length.  Sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Pull into shape.

Adjust brim & trim as desired.

BELT:  [1 TUBE]:
Ch 8.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, in next 5 ch work 1 tr, 3 sc, 1 tr, 1 sc, ch 1, turn.

2ND ROW:  1 Sc in each sc & ch 1 over each tr, ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  1 Sc, dc around next tr on prev row, sk ch—1, 3 sc, dc around next tr on prev row, sk ch—1, 1 sc, ch 1 turn.

4TH ROW:  1 Sc in each sc & ch 1 over each dc, ch 1, turn.

5TH ROW:  1 Sc, dc around next dc on prev row, sk ch—1, 3 sc, dc around next dc on prev row, sk ch—1, 1 sc, ch 1, turn.

Rep last 2 rows until belt meas desired length, allowing for required overlap.  Fasten off.

Press on wrong side with damp cloth.

Finish with buckle or lace thru rings.

NOTE:  Belt may be lined with buckram to prevent stretching, if desired.
