Free Pattern - 1943 Fancy Irish Cable Knit Purse #235

Vintage 1943 Fancy Irish Cable Knit Purse #235


Materials:
Bucilla Strawkraft or Fleisher’s Straw-Twist [all rayon], 6 skeins
#4 Knitting Needles 14”
#I Crochet Hook 6”
12” Zipper
Lining Material
Cardboard

Gauge
28 sts = 4”;    
7 rows = 1”

BAG:
Cast on 76 sts with 2 strands of yarn.

1st row [right side]:  P 1, * k 8, p 3; repeat from *, end last repeat p 1.

2nd row:  K 1, * p 8, k 3; repeat from *, end last repeat k 1. 

Repeat these 2 rows twice.

7th row [cable twist]:  P 1, * sl next 4 sts to crochet hook & hold at back of work, k next 4 sts, k 4 sts from crochet hook [cable twist], p 3, k 8, p3; repeat from * twice, work cable twist on next 8 sts as before, p 1. 

Continue in this way, working a cable twist every 12th row [11 rows between cable twist rows] until 15 ½” from beg, having 5 rows above last cable row. 

Next row [right side]:  Cast on 2 sts, turn; p 3, k 8, sl these sts on holder for handle, bind off 58 sts, work across remaining sts, cast on 2 sts, turn; k 3, p 8, cast on 3 sts.

Next row:  P 3, k 8, p 3. 

Continue pattern in this way, working cable twist every 12th row as before, until handle is 15 ½” long, having 5 rows above last twist. 

Break yarn ends for weaving. 

Sl sts on safety pin. 

Take up sts of other handle. 

Join yarn at center & cast on 3 sts. 

Finish to correspond to other handle.

End Pieces: 
With 2 strands, cast on 22 sts for top edge. 

Work stockinet st [p 1 row, k 1 row] for 5 ½”. 

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows. 

Bind off remaining 10 sts.  Make 2. 

Finishing
Steam lightly. 

Fold bag in half. 

Sew side & bottom edges of end pieces to side edges of bag. 

Weave 3 sts of cable on right handle to 8 sts of cable rib on left side of other top edge [cast-on row], crossing handle. 

Turn under 3 purled sts at each side & sew to wrong side of handle. 

Sew edges of handle together. 

Sew cast-on sts at other end of handle to wrong side. 

Finish other handle to correspond. 

Steam lightly. 

With 2 strands of yarn, working from right side, work 1 row sc across end pieces & across top edges of bag between handles. 

Sew zipper to top edge, leaving end pieces free. 

Line bag making 1” hem at top edges of center part. 

Insert stiff cardboard strips in hem.
