1942 Louisa Bow Hat #957

SIZE:
Medium

MATERIALS:
Lorraine Boilproof & Sunfast Strawtex [all rayon], Art #W89, 2 skeins
Steel crochet hook #1

GAUGE:
11 sts = 2”
6 rows = 1”

HAT:
BRIM:  Ch 80 for lower edge, 1 sc in 2nd st from hk & in each st on ch [79 sts].  Ch 1 & turn at end of every row.

2ND ROW:  1 Sc in each st.

Rep 2nd row once.

4TH ROW:  1 Sc in each of 14 sts, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 12 sts; rep from * 4 times [84 sts].

Work 3 rows even.

8TH ROW:  1 Sc in each of 14 sts, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 13 sts; rep from * 4 times [89 sts].

Work 3 rows even.

12TH ROW:  1 Sc in each of 14 sts, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of 14 sts; rep from * 4 times [94 sts].

Work even until 2 ¾” from lower edge.  Fasten off.

CROWN:  FIRST POINT:  Ch 2.

1ST ROW:  2 Sc in 2nd st from hk [2 sts].

2ND ROW:   Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each st [4 sts].

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st [inc at inside edge], 1 sc in each st to end [5 sts].

4TH ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in each st, end 2 sc in last st [7sts].

Rep 3rd & 4th rows 3 times [16 sts].  Fasten off.

SECOND POINT:  Ch 2.

Rep 1st & 2nd row of first point once.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st, end 2 sc in last st [inc at inside edge].

4TH ROW:  Same as 4th row of first point.

Rep 3rd & 4th row 3 times [16 sts].

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 16 sts, then work 1 sc in first st at inside edge of first point & in each of next 15 sts [32 sts].

Inc 1 st each side of next row & rep incs every 2nd row 4 times [42 sts].

Work even until 4 ½” from beg of points.

FIRST DEC ROW:  Ch 1, sk 1st st, 1 sc in each st to within 2 sts of end, draw up lp in each of next 2 sts & work off as 1 sc [40 sts].

Rep last row 3 times [34 sts].

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, sk 1st sc, 1 sl st in next sc, 1 sc in each of 30 sc, 1 sl st in next st.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, sk sl st, sl st over next 2 sc, 1 sc in each st to within 2 sc of end, 1 sl st in next sc.

Rep last row 3 times.  Fasten off.

BOWS:  
Ch 30 & work sc on 29 sts for 2 ¼”.  Fasten off.  Make 3.

BACK STRAP:  
Ch 30, work 29 sc for 1”.

FINISHING:  
Sew top edge of brim to outside edge of crown as illustrated, leaving V at back free.

Sew ends of back strap to ends of brim at lower edge.

Working from right side & keeping work flat, work 1 row sc on rem of ends of brim & inside edge of crown.

Steam lightly.

Gather bows at center & wind yarn 10 times around; fasten off.

Turn back lower corners of bows for 1 1/8” & tack to wrong side.

Sew bows to brim as illiustrated.
