1940s Elegante Peplum Vest #286

Quick & easy to crochet this charming, vest…stylish lines of classic design…sophisticated & smart, season-spanning, wardrobe favorite…travel ready & perfect for any occasion!

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats, 9 balls; or Clarks ONT Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, 11 balls
#10 Steel Crochet Hook
14” Ribbon 1” wide
3 Snap Fasteners

If a crocheted back is desired, buy twice amount of material & sufficient ribbon to fit around waist.

Work as for Vestee, omit opening & neck shaping.

Start at waistline, make ch 16” long.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, [ch 3, sk 3 ch, dc in next 2 ch] 39 times.  Cut off rem ch.  Ch 5, turn.

2ND ROW:  Hold back last loop of each dc on hook, make 2 dc in next dc, yo & draw thru all loops [dc cluster made], * make dc cluster in next dc, ch 3, dc cluster in next dc.  Rep from * across, end with dc cluster in last dc, ch 2, dc in top st of ch-3.  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  * Dc cluster in next dc cluster, ch 3, dc cluster in next dc cluster.  Rep from * across, end with dc in 3rd st of ch-5.  Ch 3, turn.

4TH ROW:  * Dc in next dc cluster, ch 3, dc in next dc cluster.  Rep from * across, end with dc in 3rd st of ch-3.  Ch 5, turn. 

These last 3 rows [2nd, 3rd & 4th rows] make up patt.

Work straight in patt until piece meas 8” in all, end with 3rd row.  Do not ch to turn at end of last row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Sl st across 4 complete patts.  Ch 3, work in patt across to last 4 patts.  Ch 5, turn.

Work straight in patt until piece meas 1 ½” from armhole shaping.

Divide for opening as follows:
NEXT ROW:  Work across ½ of row, end in 16th patt as at end of row.  Turn & work on these sts only until piece meas 4 ½” from opening, end at center front edge.

SHAPE NECK: 
Dec 1 patt [as for armhole edge] at center front edge each row until 12 patts rem.

Work straight until piece meas 3 ¼” from 1st row of neck shaping.  Break off. 

Attach thread in center of 16th patt at base of piece just made & work other side to correspond. 

Make 2 rows of sc around armholes, neck edge & front opening, make 5 ch-5 button loops evenly apart on right side of opening.

PEPLUM: 
Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch & work in patt for 2 rows [2nd & 3rd rows].

NEXT ROW:  * 2 Dc in next dc cluster, ch 3, 2 dc in 2nd st of next ch-3 sp, ch 3, dc in next 2 dc clusters, [ch 3, 2 dc in next dc cluster] twice, ch 3.  Rep from * across, end with 2 dc in last dc group.  Ch 5, turn [inc row made]. 

Cont in patt as before, make inc row as before on 7th row. 

Work straight in patt as for top until Peplum meas 4”.  Break off.

BUTTON: 
[MAKE 5]:  Start at center, ch 3.  Join.

1ST RND:  8 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc around. 

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  Sc in each sc around.

5TH & 6TH RNDS:  * Draw up loop in next 2 sc, yo & draw thru all loops.  Rep from * around. 

Stuff firmly with scraps of thread.

7TH RND:  Same as 5th rnd.  Break off.

FINISHING: 
Sew Buttons opposite button loops.\

Sew snap at top of opening.

Cut back from material & sew to front.

Sew one end of ribbon to left side at waistline.

Sew snaps on opposite side.
