1935 Stylish Crochet Swagger Coat & Scarf #437


Quick & easy to crochet a charming swagger coat with an optional scarf…a sophisticated, season-spanning wardrobe favorite…perfect for many occasions!


SIZE:  16.

MATERIALS:
Bear Brand or Bucilla Cassimere Sport Yarn, 22 balls Main Color [MC], 1 ball Contrast Color [CC]
#4 Crochet Hook                 
3 - 1 ¼” Buttons

GAUGE: 
3 patts = 1”;     9 rows = 2”

BACK:  With MC, ch 168 for lower edge. 

1ST ROW:  Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in same st [hdc=half double crochet=yo, draw up loop, yo & thru all 3 loops on hook], * sk 1 st on ch, 1 sc & 1 hdc in next st [cluster st]; rep from * to end of ch [84 clusters].

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, * sk 1 st, cluster in next st [sc in row below]; rep from * end with cluster in last sc of row below. 

Rep last row for entire body of coat. 

Work even in patt until there are 7 rows from beg, then dec [sk 1 cluster] at beg & leave off 1 cluster at end of next & every 8th row thereafter until there are 16 decs at each side.

Work even on 52 clusters until piece meas 32” from beg or desired length to underarm.

1ST ROW ARMHOLES:  Turn, sl st over 1st 3 clusters, work patt to within 3 clusters of end.

2ND ROW ARMHOLES:  Ch 1, turn & work to within 1 cluster of end. 

Rep last row, dec 1 cluster at end of every row, until there are 12 clusters in row.  Fasten off.

FRONT:  With MC, ch 100 for lower edge.  Work 50 clusters on ch. 

Work even in cluster st for 9” [approx 40 rows]. 

Dec at beg of next, & every 20th row, twice; then every 6th row 8 times. 

Work even on 39 clusters, until there are as many rows on Front as on Back to underarm, end at dec side [side edge].

1ST ROW ARMHOLE:  Turn, sl st over 1st 3 clusters, work to end of row; ch 1, turn & work back to armhole. 

Dec at beg of next, & every other row until 20 clusters are left in row, end at front edge.  This brings work up to neck.

Turn, sl st over 1st 15 clusters, patt to end of row. 

Cont to dec at beg of next & every other row until only 2 clusters rem.  Fasten off. 

Work other Front to correspond, be careful to reverse the sides of decs.

SLEEVES:  With MC, ch 34.  Work 17 clusters on ch. 

Work even in patt for 15 rows.  Fasten off.  This is for under part of Sleeve at wrist. 

With same yarn, ch 44 & work 22 clusters on ch for upper part of Sleeve. 

Work even on these 22 clusters for 16 rows, pick up small piece with wrong side of last row toward you, work in patt across this piece, join upper & lower part of sleeve. 

Work even on 39 clusters now in row, until Sleeve meas 17” from beg, or desired length to underarm. 

Dec 1 patt at beg of next & EVERY row thereafter until 1 cluster rem.  Fasten off. 

Work other Sleeve to correspond.

POCKETS:  With MC, ch 46 & work in cluster st for 34 rows.  Fasten off. 
Work 2nd piece for other Pocket. 

Sew tog Fronts & Back at side seams; sew tog Back & Front Shoulders for 1”, beg at armhole edge. 

Sew Sleeve seams, & sew Sleeves to armholes,  be careful to have small part of Sleeve toward back of Coat. 

Turn in 2” along front edges of Coat & sew for hem.

EDGING:  With MC, work row of sc along lower edge of Coat, Sleeves & top of Pockets, spacing sts so that edges will lie flat.

NECK BAND:  With MC, work row of sc around neck edge, space sts so that edge will lie flat, * ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each st; rep last row until there are 7 rows from beg & fasten off.

BUTTON LOOP:  With 4 strands of MC, make ch approx 2” long & sew in place at edge of neck band for button loop. 

Pin 1 Pocket to left Front with back top corner 1 ¼” from side swam, 13” below armhole; with top front corner 6 ½” below armhole. 

Sew to Coat on 3 sides. 

Sew other Pocket to other Front to correspond. 

Sew 1 button at center of end of Collar 1” from left front edge. 

Hold tog edges of opening of Sleeve. 

Sew 1 button thru 2 thicknesses of Sleeve, 3” from end & 2” from opening.

SCARF:  With CC, ch 38.  Work 1 sc in 4th ch from hook, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch; rep from * to end of ch [18 patts].

2ND ROW:  Ch 2, turn, work 1 sc in 1st sp, * ch 1, 1 sc in next sp; rep from * across, end with 1 sc in last sp [turning ch of row below]. 

Rep 2nd row until there are 8 rows from beg. 

* Dec [sk 1st sp] 1 patt at beg of each of next 2 rows, then work even for 3 rows; rep from *, until 7 patts rem in row. 

Work even on 7 patts for 18”, * then inc [work 2 patts in 1st sp] at beg of each of next 2 rows; work even for 3 rows; rep from last * until there are 18 patts in row. 

Work even for 8 rows & fasten off. 

Work row of 1 sc & ch 1, around entire scarf sp loops so that edge will lie flat.

LOOP:  Ch 6, work 5 sc on ch, ch 1, turn, work back & forth in sc until strip meas 3 ½”. 

Sew strip in place as shown in photo, to be used as loop to fasten Scarf.
