Quick & easy to create, this stylish hat & bag will become a season-spanning favorites & you’ll be the best dressed lady on the block!

HEADSIZE:  22”

MATERIALS:
HAT:  Clark’s ONT [7 balls],
OR
J & P Coats [5 balls], Mercerized Crochet, size 10
BAG:  Clark’s ONT [5 balls],
OR
J & P Coats [4 balls], Mercerized Crochet, size 10
6” Zipper
1 yd Heavy Cord
#7 Steel Crochet Hook

HAT:
Beg at tip, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.

1ST RND:  Ch 3 [counts as 1 dc], 8 dc in rind.  Join with sl st to ch-3, ch 1.  Do not turn, but work in rnds.

2ND & ALL EVEN RNDS:  Sc in each dc of prev rnd, pick up only front loop of dcs.  Join with sl st.

3RD RND:  2dc in each dc [an inc] of prev  dc rnd [1st rnd], pick up back loop of dcs [16 dc].  Join with sl st.

Each odd rnd is worked by picking up loops of prev dc rnd which lie behind sc rnd.

5TH RND:  2 Dc in each dc of prev dc rnd.  Join.

7TH RND:  Dc in each dc of prev dc rnd, making 16 incs, place them at equal intervals.  Join.

Work in same manner, alternating dc & sc rnd, inc 16 dc in each dc rnd [do not place incs directly over incs of prev rnd], until 15 dc rnds are made [224 dc].

Then work without inc for 3” [try hat on, if larger or smaller size is desired, inc or dec as nec].

After last sc rnd is made, work 2 rnds of sc in place of usual dc rnd.

Then work rnd of sl sts.  Break off.

BOW:
Ch 4.
1ST ROW:  3 Hdc in 4th ch from hook.  Ch 2, turn.

2ND ROW:  2 Hdc in 1st st [an inc], 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in last st.  Ch 2, turn.

3RD ROW:  2 Hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each st across, 2 hdc in last st.  Ch 2, turn.

REPEAT 3rd row, inc 1 st at both ends each row until there are 30 sts in row.

Work straight for 5”.

Dec 1 st at both ends until 1 st rem.  Fasten off.

WORK another piece same, but inc to 20 sts [instead of 30 sts], then work straight for 3”, then dec same as prev piece.

TAB:
Make a Tab of 8 hdc for 2”.  Break off.

Place smaller piece over larger piece & fasten them tog by Tab, thus completes Bow.

Sew Bow on hat vertically [see photo], so that it hides the joinings of rnds.

BAG:
The 2 sides of Bag are worked separately & sew tog on sides.

Start at center, ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook, ch 62, turn.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hook, & dc in each of next 58 ch sts, 8 dc in ring, then work along other side of foundation ch, making dc in each dc to end of ch [128 dc, count turning ch-3 as dc].  Ch 3, turn.

2ND & ALL EVEN ROWS:  Make sc in each dc of prev row, pick up only back loop of each dc [next row will be worked in front loops].  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  Dc in each of 60 dc of 1st row, pick up loops that lie behind 2nd row [have the sc rows form ridge], 2 dc in each of next 8 dc [inc to keep work flat], dc in each of next 60 dc [136 dc].  Ch 1, turn.

Each odd row is worked by picking up loops of prev row which lie behind sc row.

5TH ROW:  Work 61 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc, rep from * 6 more times, 2 dc in next dc, then dc in each dc to end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

7TH ROW:  Work 61 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, rep from * 6 more times, 2 dc in next dc, then dc in each dc to end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

9TH ROW:  Work 62 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, rep from * 6 more times, 2 dc in next dc, then dc in each dc to end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

11TH ROW:  Work 62 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, rep from * 6 more times, 2 dc in next dc, then dc in each dc to end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

13TH ROW:  Work 63 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, rep from * 6 more times, 2 dc in next dc, then dc in each dc to end of row.  Ch 1, turn.

WORK same, inc 8 dc in each dc row [there will be 12 dc bet incs on 27th row].

29TH ROW:  Sl st in each of next 30 sts [for side opening], dc in each dc to within 30 dc from end of row.  Ch 3, turn.

30TH ROW:  * Dc in each of next 4 dc, sk 1 dc, rep from * to end of row.  Break off.

Make another piece same as this.

SEW pieces tog, leave open 30 sts at each side at top.

HANDLE:
Cut cord in half [cone cord for each handle].  Ch 9, join with sl st to form ring.

Pass one end of cord thru this ring.

Hold cord, work 1 dc in each st, & cont work in spiral make dc in each dc of prev rnd, pick up only back loop of dcs, until cord is covered.  Break off.

Sew two ends of handle tog.

FINISHING:
To finish top of Bag & sew Handle in place, fold the top 15 sts over to wrong side, place Handle inside this fold, concealing the joining, & sew.

Sew Handle to Bag at sides, so that it does not move.

Make similar Handle & finish other side of Bag the same.

Sew in zipper.

Bag may be lined, if desired.

MISS JULIA’S PURSE LINING NOTES:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece before joinings & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog.

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag.

Sew in zipper [if desired].

Note:
Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

ENJOY!
