Vintage 1936 Bonita Beret #402


HEADSIZE:  22”

MATERIALS: 
 #4 Steel Crochet Hook

BERET:
Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.  Ch 1.

1ST RND:  12 Sc in ring.

2ND RND:  * Ch 2, sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * 5 more times [6 eyelet  divisions & 6 sc sections in all].

3RD RND:  Ch 2, sk ch-2 sp & first sc of next sc group, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next ch-2 sp, * ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * 4 more times.  Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc [to make popcorn st, ch 1, 5 dc in next st, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 & draw loop thru one on hook].  Sc in next ch-2 sp.  This starts a pc st group.

4TH RND:  * Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in next, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * 4 more times.  Then ch 2, sk 1st sc of next pc st group, 1 sc in pc st, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.

5TH RND:  * Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * 4 more times.  Then ch 2, sk 1st sc of next pc group, 1 sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next ch-2 sp. 

6TH RND:  * Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * 4 more times.  Then ch 2, sk 1st sc of next pc st group, 1 sc in pc st, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.

7TH RND:  * Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in each of next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * 4 more times.  Then ch 2, sk 1st sc of next pc st group, 1 sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc, sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in ch-2 sp.

8TH RND:  * Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * working sc over pc sts, as done prev.

9TH RND:  * Ch 2, sk 1st sc of next sc group, sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.  Rep from * 4 more times.  Then ch 2, sk 1st sc of next pc st group, sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc, sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc, sc in next sc, 1 pc st in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp.

10TH & FOLLOWING RNDS:  Work alternate rnds of 1 rnd of sc & 1 rnd of sc with pc sts, inc 1 sc in each rnd & inc 1 pc st [in pc st section] in every pc st rnd, until work meas 9 ½” diameter. 

If larger hat is needed, work to a larger diameter.

WORK 2 rnds of sc, but do not inc [as done in prev rnds]. 

For next 1 ½” [or until inside meas of beret is your head size], dec 8 sts in each rnd [to dec, sk 1 sc, & make sc in next sc].

WORK rnd of sc without inc or dec.

NEXT RND:  Work directly under sts of prev rnd [insert hook at base of sc of prev rnd]. 

NEXT RND: Make a rnd of sc, then work rnd of sc under this rnd as before.

CONT same to have a firm band of 2” or desired depth.
