1936 Au Courant Hat #400

Quick & easy to create, this feminine hat will become a season-spanning favorite & you’ll be the best dressed lady on the block!


HEADSIZE:  22”

MATERIALS: 
Clark’s ONT Knitting & Crochet Cotton [1 ball],
or J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, [1 ball]
#5 Steel Crochet Hook
1 yd Millinery Wire

CROWN: 
Beg at tip, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.

1ST RND:  Ch 3 [counts as dc], 2 dc in ring, * ch 2, 3 dc in ring, rep from * 3 more times, ch 2, sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 [5 dc-groups]. 

Hereafter, in working groups of dc, pick up only back loop of dcs of prev rnd.

2ND RND: Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made [an inc], * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 2, 2 dc in first dc of next group, rep from * around completing 5 groups.  Join last ch 2 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made, * 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc in last dc of same group, ch 2, 2 dc in first dc of next group, rep from * around.  Join last ch 2 to 3rd st of ch-3.

4TH & 5TH RNDS:  Same as 3rd rnd, inc in first & last dc of each group & make ch-3 [instead of ch-2] bet groups.  Join.

6TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made, * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * to end of group, ch 4, 2 dc in 1st dc of next group, rep from first * of this rnd all around [17 dc in each group].  Join last ch 4 to ch-3.

7TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in same st where sl st was made, * dc in each of next 15 dc, 2 dc in last dc, ch 4, 2 dc in 1st dc of next group, rep from * around.  Join last ch 4 to ch-3.

8TH RND:  Ch 4, * sk 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1, rep from * around, join last ch 1 to 3rd st of ch-4 [58 sps].

9TH RND:  Ch 5, * dc in next dc, ch 2, rep from * around.  Join last ch 2 to 3rd st of ch-5.

10TH, 11TH & 12TH RNDS:  Ch 6, & make dc in each dc of prev rnd, make ch 3 bet dcs.  Join as before.

13TH RND:  Ch 6, * dc in next dc, ch 3, rep from * 2 more times, ** sk next sp, make 3 dc in center st of next sp, ch 3, sk next dc, dc in next dc, make 9 more ch-3 sps, then ch 3, rep from ** around [five 3 dc-groups].  Join as before.

14TH RND:  Ch 6, * dc in next dc, ch 3, rep from * 2 more times, ** 2 dc in first dc of dc-group, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc, make 9 more ch-3 sps, ch 3, rep from ** around.  Join.

15TH THRU 19TH RNDS:  Work in this manner, make ch-2 sps over sps of prev rnd, & inc in dc-groups in same way as incs were made in groups in 3rd thru 7th rnds [19 dc in each group on 19th rnd].  Join.  Do not break off, but cont with Brim.

BRIM: 
1ST RND:  Ch 3, dc in each sp & dc in each dc.  Join with sl st.  Hereafter, pick up only back loop of each dc of prev rnd.

2ND & 3RD RNDS:  Ch 3, dc in each dc.  Join with sl st.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc, inc 1 dc in every 5th dc [to inc, make 2 dc in 1 st].  Join. 

5TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in dc, inc in every 6th dc.  Join.

6TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc.  Join & break off thread.

TO SHAPE BRIM: 
Hereafter work in rows, breaking off thread at end of each row & attaching to beg of prev row, as follows:

1ST ROW:  From beg of last rnd, meas off 5” towards left, attach thread at this point & make 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, 1 hdc in each of next 2 dc, dc in each dc to within 5” from join, then 1 hdc in each of next 2 dc, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, sl st in next dc.  Break off.

2ND ROW:  Attach thread to 1st dc at beg of 1st row, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, 1 hdc in each of next 2 dc, dc in each dc inc 1 dc in every 7th dc to within 5 dc from end of prev row, then 1 hdc in each of next 2 dc, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc, sl st in next dc.  Break off.

3RD & 4TH ROWS:  Same as 2nd row, but without incs.  Break off.

5TH ROW:  Attach thread to 8th dc at beg of 4th row, & work as before, inc in every 9th dc, & work to within 13 dc from end of 4th row, then 2 hdc, 2 sc & 1 sl st.  Break off.

6TH & 7TH ROWS:  Same as 5th row, but without incs.  Break off. 

TO MAKE BRIM STIFF, work sc closely tog all around edge of brim, holding along wire & working over it so that it is completely covered. 

Fasten wire neatly at back & comp work with 1 rnd of sl sts.

CORD: 
Holding thread double, make chain approx 48”, turn & make 1 sl st in each ch.  Break off. 

Pass cord thru 3rd row of Brim, pass under 3 dc & over 2 dc, etc, & tie into bow at front.  See photos.
